Paralyzed Veterans of America

The Paralyzed Veterans of America is a charitable organization endorsed by the United

States government to represent the interest of disabled veterans, specifically those who suffer

from spinal cord injury or disease. Since 1946, the organization has raised money for activities

such as veteran’s health advocacy, spinal cord injury and disease research and education, and

veteran benefits and rights support (DeVeux & Sharpe, 2019, pg. 746). Their donations are

mainly generated through the periodic delivery of greeting cards and mailing address labels with

their request for donations. While this method has been effective, the organization is looking to

increase overall efficiency, specifically reducing mailing costs. For this, the PVA would like to

model the number of donations based on past giving and demographic variables on their donors.

The dataset contains data on 3,648 individuals who recently donated alongside 26 predictor

variables. Additional data such as donor’s age, income, homeownership, and gender are also

included.

Analysis Plan
Statistical analysis is commonly employed to collect and analyze large amounts of data to

discover patterns or trends. Its benefits lie within its ability to provide perspective and

objectivity during the analysis process (Brooks, 2020). During the data analysis, various

quantitative factors must be considered, such as standard deviation. The standard deviation

measures how far from the mean’s dataset the value is. Since PVA is looking to target their

donation request based on demographics, it should pay close attention to all the variables (not

only the donation amount) that stay close to the mean. Doing so allows the organization to

identify which demographic group it should focus on and which to eliminate. Using StatCrunch,

PVA’s data set is analyzed. Below are the descriptive statistics for this dataset, followed by 26

graphs showcasing the different demographic groups and their individual contributions. Finally,

a histogram chart is included that highlights the frequency of donations per dollar amount.

Based on the above data, it is recommended that the PVA focus on targeting the

following: male veterans, WWII veterans, Vietnam veterans, marketing cluster codes

(CLUSTER2), and the unique record identifier (CONTROLN) since the return on donations was

higher than any other demographic.
