Course Objectives Course Goal

Introduce civil engineering students to soil and its engineering properties.

Why?
 “Virtually every structure is supported by soil or rock. Those that aren’t either
fly, float, or fall over.”

 There are numerous earth-structures [structures made of soil] that are useful to
humankind. The safe and economical design of these structures requires
engineering.

 There are almost no civil works that can be constructed without using,
excavating, moving, supporting or otherwise controlling soil and/or
groundwater.

Additional Remarks  Students must get at least 40 over 100 on the final exam to pass
the course.

COURSE POLICIES

 University policies on neatness and academic honesty will be adhered to.

 It is expected that those in the class will respect one another and contribute to a constructive
learning environment.
