1. Define verbals;
2. Explain the three types of verbals and the function of each; and
3. Construct sentence that uses verbals and identify what type of verbal is
used.

II. Subject matter

1. Title of the lesson: Verbals (Infinitive, Gerund, and Participle)
2. Material: Laptop and PPT
III. Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary “Let us pray first…”
Activities (Call one student from
the class) Jesus, guard me through
this day in all I do and
all I say. We give you,
our school. We give you
all the teachers and staff
who work here, we give
you all the children who
study here. We pray our
school would be place
of great discovery,
adventure and
“Good afternoon, creativity. Amen.
Class...”

“Good afternoon, Sir”

(Checking of
Attendance) Say present
when I call your name...
(Students will say
present as the teacher
call their name)

Now the word for today

is “School”
Can someone give me
their idea what is
school?
(Call one student from
the class) School is an institution
for educating children.

Give me sentences using

the word school and
make sure that your
sentence has a subject
and a verb in it.
Ex. Kenny break the pot
in the garden. (Student 1) Maria gets a
(Call three student from high score in yesterday
the class) quiz.

(Student 2) Jake riding

his bike on his way to
school.

(Student 3) Kian take

his friend in a date.

B. Review
What was the last topic
all about?
(Call someone from the
class)
(Student will answer)

C. Motivation
Before we start our
lesson for today were
going to have first an
activity which you will
give me each one of you
a verb. And what is verb
again?
(Call someone from the A word used to describe
class) an action, state, or
occurrence, and forming
the main part of the
Good let’s start! predicate of a sentence.

Slide, Kick, Ride,

Watch, Play, Catch,
Supply, Throw, Speak,
Good job everyone! Listen, Move, and etc.

D. Lesson Proper
Did you know that these
verbs can be also used as
other function in a
sentence?
Yes!
We call it VERBALS.

The difference between a

verb and a verbal is not
done by looking only at
the word itself. You have
to see how the word is
being used. In both
cases, the word looks
like a verb, but if it’s
used as something other
than a verb it’s a verbal.
Ex. Waxed, Sleeping,
Flowing, Playing.
These can be verbs or
verbals depending upon
how they are used in the
sentence.
Ex. Our butler waxed the
floors.
In this sentence the word
waxed is being used as a
verb to tell what action is
being done.
Ex. The waxed floors
were slippery and
dangerous.
In this sentence the word
waxed still looks like a
verb, but it is being used
as an adjective.

Verbals are verb forms

(words that look like
verbs or could be verbs
in other sentences) that
are used as one of the
following: Noun,
Adjective, and Adverb.
A verbal can never be
the verb of the sentence.

There are three different

kinds of verbals:
Infinitive, Participle, and
Gerund.
Each of this verbal has a
specific purpose and use
in a sentence.

The first one is

Infinitive. Infinitive is a
verb form that is
proceeded by the word
“to.”
Ex. To play, To sleep,
To steal, To be seen, To
have been stolen, To
speak and a lot more.
In some sentences
(following certain
verbs), the “sign of the
infinitive” (the word “to)
is omitted. This is done
for clarity.
Ex. Help him (to) move
the sofa.
Watch the fish (to) snap
at the hook.
Can you feel the floor
(to) move?
The verbs which call for
an omitted “to” are: See,
Hear, Feel, Help, Let,
Watch, Make and a lot
more.
An infinitive has three
possible functions:
Noun, Adjective, and
Adverb. Knowing where
an infinitive should go
helps make the structure
of the sentence clearer.

Ex. Of infinitive as a
Noun:
I hate to go. (Direct
object)
To steal is a crime.
(subject)
Ex. Of infinitive as an
Adjective:
It’s time to go. (Modify
time)
There are jobs to be
done. (Modify jobs)
Ex. Of infinitive as an
Adverb:
He always plays to win.
Infinitives can also have
modifiers or
complements. This can
be done because there is
a verb form in the
infinitive that (if being
used as a verb in another
sentence) could take a
complement such as an
indirect or direct object
or a predicate
complement.

The next verbal is

Participles.
Verb forms that are used
as adjectives are called
participles.
They will have two
forms:
The Present (ending in “-
ing”) and the Past
(ending in “-ed” or “-
en”). These contain
action, but they are not
used as verbs in the
sentence.

Ex. Smoking gun,

Broken window, Elected
official, Snoring spouse,
Streaming video,
Walking track, and a lot
more.

Participles can appear in

several places in the
sentence, but they are
most commonly found
describing or modifying
the subject. Most
participle phrases will
have commas setting
them off. This is
especially true when
they open a sentence and
modify the subject.
Ex. Running at full
speed, the back raced
twenty yards for a score.
Crying loudly, the baby
wanted some attention.

The last verbal is

Gerund.
Gerund looks a lot like a
participle because it ends
in “-ing.” However, the
gerund is going to be
used as a noun. Gerunds
will show up as subjects,
direct or indirect objects
or objects of
prepositions.

Ex. Chewing gum in

class is not allowed.
(subject)
I liked eating at the new
restaurant. (Direct
object)
Abusing the warm fuzzy
kitten is not allowed in
this class. (subject)

E. Enrichment Activity
Now let’s identify these
sentences if what type of
verbals they are. Are
they Infinitive,
Participles, or Gerund?
1. Traveling might
satisfy your desire
for new experiences.
What type of verbal
this is?
(Call someone from
the class) It’s Gerund sir!

2. Shaken, he walked
away from the
wrecked car.
What type of verbal
this is?
(Call someone from
the class) It’s Participles sir!

3. The police arrested

him for speeding.
What type of verbal
this is?
(Call someone from
the class)
It’s Gerund sir!
4. We must study to
learn.
What type of verbal
this is?
(Call someone from
the class)

5. To wait seemed It’s Infinitive sir!

foolish when
decisive action was
required.
What type of verbal
this is?
(Call someone from
the class)

It’s Infinitive sir!
