Part 1
Highlights 2 important points from the video and your reading and explain with
your own words.

1. From the video

• The term "sanitarium" became part of Adventist vocabulary and tradition,
and it even made its way into popular culture.
• In our church, health ministry has been widely pushed and is an important
part of our evangelistic approach.

2. From your reading:

• Kellogg was continuously looking for new ways to improve people's health,
and he came up with a wide range of foods, surgical instruments, and
therapeutic gadgets in the process.
• Kellogg's powerful impact has caused many young people to lose trust in
denominational doctrines, particularly the belief in Ellen White's inspiration.
This was due to his advocacy of pantheistic heresies in his teachings.

Part 2
Answer these following questions:

1. Who is Dr. Kellogg? What was his contribution in the health world as
well as our Sanitarium?

John Harvey Kellogg was a Seventh-day Adventist physician, health promoter,

nutritionist, inventor, author, eugenicist, and entrepreneur. He was the
director of the Battle Creek Sanitarium, the creator of flaked breakfast cereal,
and a long-time associate of the Seventh-day Adventist Church's founders,
James and Ellen White. Kellogg was disfellowshipped in 1907 after years of
disagreements with denominational leadership over management style,
philosophy, and doctrine, but he maintained Adventist friendships and many
aspects of the Adventist lifestyle until his death in 1943. His contribution in the
health world are the following:
• Authored dozens of publications on how to maintain and protect one's health
through nutrition, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle.
• The editor of the Adventist Health Reformer, which he renamed the Good
Health Magazine once he took over as editor.
• Invented a variety of health-restorative devices, including an electric blanket,
electrotherapy coils, a dynamometer for testing muscle strength, various
hydrotherapy devices, exercise beds, arc lamp scalp treatments, foot vibrators,
ultra violet dental treatment, and hot air baths, among others.
• The cornflake, which is his most famous creation, which has since become a
staple of American breakfasts.
• Popularized the vegetarian diet by producing peanut butter, dry cereals, and
gluten and nut-based meat alternatives.
• Developed Granola Flakes in 1894 with the help of his brother Will Keith.
• He was instrumental in the development of Battle Creek Sanitarium, medical
teaching institutions, and the Adventist health reform movement.

2. How did the church encounter with Kellogg’s problem?

The church had an issue with Dr. Kellogg because he made assertions about
God's personality based on pantheistic beliefs. His ideals, temperament, and
dominant attitude clashed with Adventist Church leadership, causing him to
leave the church.

3. How did blessing come from these crises?

Regardless of the controversy, the benefit we may derive from this is his
contribution to the medical community. He was one of the first health
reformers to realize the dangers of obesity to one's health, and he urged an
increasingly sedentary populace to exercise control over not only what they
ate, but also how much they ate. We would not have known about it if it hadn't
been for this.
4. How can blessing come in our own time (and in our own lives) as we
face different crises?

God is greater than any storm! Whatever you're going through, trust in God to
keep you safe until the storm passes and the sun shines again. And keep in
mind that the same God who created the storm also created the rainbow that
will undoubtedly follow.

Even if the waves are rough and the voyage is rocky, we can still feel a
profound inner delight that comes from loving and serving God. Sure, there
will be bad days, rainy days, and dark days, but genuine joy isn't tossed to
and fro by our feelings.

5. What can you learn from the Dr. Kellogg?

Don’t be too independent of the Lord. Although independence may appear to

be a wonderful accomplishment, the benefits we can obtain by surrendering to
His leadership far transcend what we can achieve on our own.

6. What is pantheism? Explain.

Pantheism is the idea that reality and divinity are one and the same, or that
everything is made up of an all-encompassing, immanent god.
