1.

Describe the ancient war between Science & society, Science & politics, and
Science & Superstitious Christianity. Strictly based on the movie and cite specific
examples to earn points.

Based on the movie entitled, “Agora” there is a war arising between

Science & Society, which is the ignorance of people in the information that the
philosophers are presenting them, it was shown in the film that the people were
so focused in arguing about their own beliefs and faith as they show negligence
to what the philosophers were telling them which ended with physical fights that
killed many people; between Science & Politics, diversity divides them more in
the government, having different perception made it more confusing to solve an
issue. Government did not gave importance to science as they believe it is not
that important and that they should address their current problems. The best
example for this is the scene where Hypatia rebutted a representative in the
council during their meeting about having a solution to unite them through
baptizing all citizens as Christians which she clearly opposed. It was shown that
politics and its influence through its power made strains that created issues
between the two; between Science & Superstitious Christianity, it is obvious
that these two never get along, as per Science needs evident proof and
Christians depends on their faith. Hypatia and a Christian got into a heated
argument that ended up with her questioning Christian’s faith and her being
questioned about her belief in Philosophy. It resulted into a scene in which Cyril
and his fellowmen called her inappropriate names just because she have a
different perception in things and worst, she died because of it.

2. What type of a woman is Hypatia?

Hypatia is a type of woman who has a strong will to defend what she
believes in. Her love for wisdom as she seeks to answer unanswered questions
proves it. She will not let anyone hinder her curious mind from discovering the
truth behind the mystery of the things around us.

3. How does Hypatia describe the motion of the planets and the sun? Compare this
with the work of Kepler.

Hypatia had a lot of theory about the motion of the planets and the sun,
but at the end of the film, her final conclusion was that the sun is at the center
and the earth revolves around it in an elliptical manner. It is almost the same as
the work of Kepler about the Heliocentric Theory, but there is no proof that
Hypatia was the one who first discovered it because it is Kepler who got credited
with that discovery.
4. Beyond Historical importance of the movie, cite 3 good insights intellectually and
philosophically necessary to maximize the progress of the Science, Technology
and Society.

First, the Socratic method of questioning things in order to answer it,

brainstorming and working as a group to prove something is a big step towards
progress in anything. Second, having the strong will and determination to finish
what one started is by all means necessary. There are inventions and
innovations that never gets done because some gives up when they are stuck in
a problem that they stopped looking for solutions. Lastly, acceptance of the
people is what we need instead of negative insults. People nowadays tend to
compete with each other in discovery and invention instead of doing it for
progress and everyone’s benefit. Also, it must be relevant and really useful not
just an invention for fame. To fully maximize our progress in Science,
Technology, and Society, we must be united towards a goal for common good
wherein we will not take advantage of these to be ahead of others.
