Statements Answer
History is cultural memory, involving our sense of
community and shared experiences. Obliterating
history from our people removes our sense of
belongingness in society, leaving us clueless about who
we are as an individual. It would expose us to corrupt
ideologies and propagandas because we will have no
guide from significant historical references. Our history
is our own, whether we favor it or not. Destroying it
would mean erasing the foundations of our national
identity. Thus, we should learn from history rather
than wipe it out from our fellows.

Clarke’s quote reminds us that our real enemy is not

our colonizers but the mindset that we are inferior to
them. This is similar to what Padre Florentino said in El
Filibusterismo, “Our misfortunes are our own fault, let
us blame nobody else for them.” They controlled us
because they made us think that our culture and
history were wrong and subservient. For years, we
practiced their ways because we were ashamed of
ours. We were held captive, a prisoner of their brain-
washing. Therefore, we should celebrate and claim our
culture and history with the highest regards.
