REFLECTION

I. In doing my modules in Personality Development course, the different concepts and

principles that I have learned from this module made me realize what type of student I
am. I want to be the type of student who is not just good in acquiring knowledge but I
also want to enjoy and at the same time be fruitful on what I have learned. I want
myself to be involved in and pass all my activities on time and be more interactive in
our learning. I developed critical and situational thinking skills in applying the concepts
in real life situations. To be honest, I always feel that I don’t have an inch of creativity
on my body but since I have learned in this course the importance of being a creative
student would try my best to practice it.

II. On what I have noticed in this lesson, it is mostly talks about the etiquette of life in
different ways. I really enjoyed while answering the essays and reflection paper
because it talks about life and for me, it is one of the most important lessons to teach in
schools. I have learned that manners are important to make a good impression on others
in everyday life. It also helps us to feel good about yourself and your identity. No
matter where you are, at home, at work or with friends, practicing good manners are
important. If you practice good manners, you are showing those around you that you
are considerate to their feelings and also respect them. You are also setting standards
for other’s behaviour and encouraging them to treat you with similar respect.

III. Personal Development covers activities that improves my awareness and identity
that enhances the quality of life and contributes to the realization of my dreams and
aspirations. In short, I have learned that personal development takes place over the
course of a person’s entire life. I personally believe that knowledge is not power, but
the application of knowledge is power. So, we must put into action what we have
learned. In my conclusion, if you are looking for personal development, you have to
have a sensible view of your faults and your talents. This tells you which direction
you have to take your life into.

I. Week 1 - Module 1 - Assignment 1 - Introduction to Personality Development

and Human Relations

A. How is one's personality revealed to you? Explain.

According on the Encyclopedia of Psychology, personality refers to individual

differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. Our personality is
a reflection of our ‘inner being’ - the ‘core self’ expresses itself in a number of ways in
our everyday life and manifest as our personality. But how can one’s personality
revealed? In my own observation, the time of crisis reveal your true personality like
nothing else. Crisis may bring out the best in you or the worst in you depending upon the
true nature of your ‘core self’. A person with a remarkable personality stands tall in the
face of difficulties and retains the essential human virtues. Another thing is, how you treat
someone who is utterly powerless or absolutely incapable of being advantageous to you
also show your personality. If you want to see someone’s personality-use this as a
touchstone tool. Lastly, we can discover someone’s personality on how he/she interacts to
the people around him/her. Like in the family setting, these are the people we deal with on
routine basis and tend to take for granted. But in the end, our first judgment on the person
may not be true. Always remember that we cannot easily judge a person without knowing
their story and maybe that person only depends his/her attitude on how you interact to
him/her.

II. Week 2 - Module 2 - Assignment 2 - Human Relations

1. What interpersonal skills do you have? What interpersonal skills would you like to
develop or improve?

The interpersonal skills that I may have are listening skills, being able to work in others
in groups or teams and decision making that can identify and solve problems with group of
people. Based on what I have observed on myself, I am lacking in skills of persuading people.
Sometimes I have hard time explaining what is inside of my mind so what happens is that, they
cannot get my point easily. I want to improve myself in that aspect because I am in a business
management course and in this field it is very important that you have good communication
skills. If a businessman cannot persuade other people to purchase his goods or services, how
will the business grow? While I am still a student it is very important that I do my best to
enhance my persuading skills because it will be a big help in my part when I work in the
industry.

III. Week 3 - Module 3 - Assignment 3 - Building High Self-Esteem

Question: Building High Self-esteem

How might self-esteem influence your awareness of reality?

For me, self-esteem is very important to one person because it is their interpretation
about their own worth and value. When one person has high self-esteem, he is motivated to
take care of himself and to persistently strive towards the fulfillment of his goals and
aspirations. On the other hand, if a person has low self-esteem he do not see himself as worthy
or capable of achieving their goals and so tend to let important things slide and to be less
persistent and resilient in terms of his daily living. For example, the use of social media can
affect one’s self-esteem. Sometimes, there cam a point that I feel losing my self-esteem
because social media taught us what is the perfect beauty standard of today’s generations. Try
to open your instagram account, you can see lot of pictures of woman having clear skin and
nice body figure, whereas some people degrade themselves because of how they look. What
happens is that, those people are having hard time to bring out the best in them and to accept
themselves. So the best thing to do is accept the fact that there are really people who are
greater than us. Also, it is important to accept criticism, learn from our mistakes, and
communicate more effectively. This can result in better human relations at work and
ultimately, higher productivity and higher profitability in life.

VI. Module 6 - Assignment 6 - Improving Personal and Organizational

Communications

1. When is it most appropriate to communicate: Impersonally? Interpersonally?

Since I am not familiar in impersonal communication, I searched first the meaning of it.
Based on what I have read, impersonal communication is generally informal and based on
social roles. Example of this is in a business world; an interaction between sales representative
and customer. It uses terms to refer less direct methods of communication such as email,
instant messaging, text messaging, video conferencing and social networks. So it means that
there is no feelings between the people who are communicating. They are just doing their task
and making sure to complete it. On the other hand, interpersonal communication skills are soft
skills that are easily transferable across industries and positions. For example, employers value
interpersonal skills because they contribute to positive work environments and help maintain
an efficient workflow. They are able to communicate and build relationships with others.
Employers of a company tend to incorporate both innate personality traits and how they have
learned to handle certain social situations. Effective interpersonal skills can help you during
the job interview process and can have a positive impact on your career advancement.

VII. Module 7 - Assignment 7 – Personal Values Influence Ethical Choices

“Do you believe that character can be “trained” in school or work courses?”

In my opinion, yes, I believe that character can be trained in school or any work courses. If
you have notice, most of our time is diverted to school/work than our house. We spend more
time doing school or work related activities that can help to shape our character. Since students
spend most of their time at school, it is the perfect place to instill moral values and character
building. A quality sustained process of teaching students, where the student is learning and
being shown examples of good character daily, together with role playing, interaction and
constant practice of what is learned, should instill good character traits in the student. It is
school education that shapes a child and develops their character. A good school education is
the key to building social and life skills. It teaches one the values of caring about other people,
honesty, responsibility, and other important traits that make for an upstanding and honorable
citizen. In terms of work, yes, I still believe that it can help to train one’s character. A work
ethic is a set of moral principles an employee uses in his or her job and it encompasses many
of these traits: reliability/dependability, dedication, productivity, cooperation character and etc.

VIII. Module 8 - Assignment 8 - Achieving Emotional Balance in A Chaotic World

QUESTION: Improving Personal and Organizational Communications

1. How might someone help to “detoxify” a work environment?

There are toxic company cultures all over the place in several different industries.
Having a strong company culture can really make or break a candidate’s decision to join your
organization. Detoxifying your work environment may not always guarantee diversity and
inclusion. But striving for more than just a non-toxic environment, and going beyond that to
foster a supportive and inclusive workplace, can help promote diversity in the same move.
There are many ways for someone to help detoxifying a work environment but for me, one of
the best way is, thinking of a long term solutions in every problem, not just about quick fixes.
For example, in some company, they are throwing pizza parties but it doesn't even really help
to solve the organization’s problem. A lot of companies who will mask a problem by creating
a fun perk. Second thing that we can do to detoxify a work environment is being consistent in
fixing your culture. As an employee, you should be consistent on what you are doing to create
change and positive impact. Being consistent is a sign that an employee is concern in fixing
certain issues inside the company. If there is a new implemented program, you must follow
through and be as consistent as possible. Inconsistency will show your colleagues that you
aren’t committed to creating a positive impact and change.

IX. Module 8 – Recitation 1

1. What are the things that annoy/irritate you? Explain or cite a situation.

There are many things that annoys me but the major reason for getting me annoyed is
when someone is always comparing me from other person. Because basically I am different to
other people.

X. Module 8 – Recitation 2

2. How do you express your anger?

When I am angry, I am just quiet. Because I do not want to speak bad or hurtful when I
am angry that is why I always choose to be silent. And when I am already fine and ready to
discuss my problem, now I can openly explain myself without saying hurtful words.

XI. Personal Mission Statement

In a paragraph form and in five sentences only write your personal mission statement by:
1. Identifying what you value in life and what principles you believe in.
2. State your action plan on how you will achieve your mission as a person.

My personal mission statement is to lead a God-centered life around the principles of

compassion, integrity and excellence. In order to achieve this, I must remember that no riches
of man can exceed the riches of my Provider. I need to take step in envisioning in becoming
the best version of myself every day; a person who is enthusiastic, committed and faithful. I
must humble myself every time I have achieved my goals and always bring back all the glory
to God. My life purpose, to love and honor God, is my everyday foundation.

XII. Week 9 - Reflection Paper on Self-Concept Seminar

Self-concept is generally thought of as our individual perceptions of our behavior,

abilities, and unique characteristics—a mental picture of who you are as a person. The webinar
is very important and helpful to me especially today wherein there is pandemic and many
students do not feel confident enough on how they used to the new education program. Many
students are experiencing stress and anxiety that affects their psychological matter and affects
their self-concept. The webinar set as a reminder that coping up in today’s situation is very
necessary for healthy and strong idea of one’s self concept. At its most basic, self-concept is a
collection of beliefs one holds about oneself and the responses of others. It embodies the
answer to the question "Who am I?"

One of the speakers is Ms. Joyce Miranda who is a member of Holy Angel University’s
Guidance Counselor. She discussed about the self-concept and how can someone achieve a
high self-esteem. She mentioned that an idea of the self-concept is from the beliefs one holds
about oneself and the responses of others. The self-concept is a general term used to refer to
how someone thinks about, evaluates or perceives themselves. To be aware of oneself is to
have a concept of oneself.

One thing that she mentioned is the importance of having high self-esteem. Self-esteem
always involves a degree of evaluation and we may have either a positive or a negative view
of ourselves. The importance of having high self-esteem may lead to self-acceptance,
confidence to our own capabilities and being optimistic. Especially when we graduate and
apply for work, it is has a big factor that you look and speak confident to an interview. This is
where the interviewee may evaluate you if you can do the job or not. She reminded us that , in
an early age, we should develop high self-esteem so that whenever we became older we
believe that we are capable and worthy at many things.

Page | 14
Next speaker is Ms. Cecilia De Guzman and based on her discussion she focused on
self-confident and how to achieve it. Everyone knows that self-confident is very important but
what is not known to everyone is the degree of its importance. Self-confidence is more
important that you can imagine. It can change your whole life to the better. She also added that
while lack of confidence will definitely have negative effects on your social relations, career,
achievements and even your mood.

When you have confidence you are less or not affected by the criticism. She also
reminds us that, being confident about your strength helps you draw courage and resolution
when going gets tough in life. The more confident you are, the less disappointments when you
will feel upon being rejected. Self-confidence and happiness are strongly connected. It’s all
about knowing that you are good worthy and capable of facing life problems. The more
confident you become, the happier you will be.

Last speaker is Mr. Alain Mandal and what I have remembered to his discussion is
about having humor. He said that at all times having a sense of humor is better than just a
pretty face. Studies have shown that a sense of humor can improve your mental and physical
health, boost your attractiveness, and improve your leadership skills. He also said that, people
who score highly in certain types of humor have better self-esteem, more positive affect,
greater self-competency, more control over anxiety, and better performance in social
interactions.

Life is complex enough in itself. Our duty is to make it as fun and pleasant as it can
possibly be even in adversity. I believe, one must have sense of humor in order to carry
through and lighten the burden of our everyday mental stress. Otherwise, life’s trying times
could drown us in self-pity and bitterness. Perhaps, approaching our daily life's endeavors with
a sense of humor has a lot to do in triggering our endorphins. This makes us feel mentally
happier or stable. A smile is the best ornament on human beings. Whatever brings that out -
sense of humor - is great differentiator.

Page | 15
As for my self realization, I need to be more confident. Sometimes I feel insecure on
what I look and how I project myself to others because I am afraid of rejection and to be
critize. Sometimes I let myself to stay away with people for less contact. But then I realized
that, there are still people who appreciates me. No matter how few they were but at least they
are true that having plenty of friends but they are not there when you

need them. Learn to appreciate and love yourself first because that is the time when you can
learn to also understand and appreciate others. Remember, beauty from the inside is much 15

more important than the outside.

XIII. Reflection Paper on Make-Over Seminar

There is a saying, “Clothes speak for you before you could”, this statement tells us that first
impression is the best impression. Being presentable is one of the most important factors for an
every individual despite the place, the occasion and the gender. It is very important for an
employee or business people to be presentable, as it shows how serious an individual is about
his or her business. Being messy makes people to think that an individual is an unorganized
and not considering his role or job that important. A presentable physical appearance with
proper etiquette gives oneself a great confidence and helps to build his career faster.

For the Make-Over Seminar, our guest speaker is Sir Rj Ryan H. Guevarra. He is a
professional stylist and make-up artist in showbiz industry. He taught us the importance of
looking presentable by the use of proper clothes, shoes and make-up especially in work. He
mentioned that, in the professional world, your first impression will last. It’s important to
equally dress well and appropriate in the professional world.
Dressing well will not only increase your self-confidence but it will also impress and attract
other people. Proper grooming and a professional appearance are important to gain respect in
the workplace. The way you look and carry yourself creates an impression on the people you
work alongside. Both men and women should take care of and look after themselves.

He also taught us how to do make up. He suggests that light make up is better when it
comes to work setting. All of the employees need to look stress-free in the workplace for better
engagement and productivity. He also added that it is really important to dress as you want to
be perceived by others. Another interesting aspect is when we dress well, we feel confident.
That is why dressing contributes a lot to professional success.
My insight about the webinar’s topic is, it is really important to consider and take time to
look presentable wherever you are, especially in an interview and work related. Also make
sure that you are comfortable on what you are wearing. Just like in my past experiences, I may

Page | 17
conclude that most of the interviews are based on first impression; the way you dress and your
personality. They can tell if that person is serious and doing his best to be part of the team.
Setting aside the interview scenario, sometimes physical appearance is very deceiving. You
can see a person wearing professional suit but his attitude isn’t match on how neat and
beautiful he’s wearing. It also matters the manner of a person. As you take time looking good
to people around you, you also need to practice a good attitude.

XIV. Week 10 – Reflection Paper on Self Defence Seminar

The webinar held on March 20, 2021 talks about self-defense and our speaker is Sir. Donne
Pagaduan. For me, the topic is very timely and necessary in today’s situation. First, he
mentioned on what is the meaning of self-defense. Based on what he said, self-defense is a
legal term which allows a person to use reasonable force to protect him or a third person from
personal injury inflicted by another so long as the defender has reason to believe that he or a
third person is in serious danger. He also added that It allows a person to protect himself from
harm under appropriate circumstances.

He discussed about many things like what to do if there is an earthquake, different kinds of
modus operandi, things should do when caught on fire and many more. Among of all his topic,
there is a specific topic he discussed that made some of the students, mostly girls, made them
react. As far as I remember, he said that girls should not wear revealing clothes in public for
them to be safe. It looks like people don't understand why they would wear something to get
attention and then complain when they do get attention. It that sense, I can see girl students
questioned and defended their thoughts about it. Most of them are not happy and do not agree
on what he is saying.

I remembered when I was in high school, me and my sister is on our way to school at 4:00
am in the morning because we have a theater play so we must arrive early for preparation.
While waiting for tricycle, an old man stopped in front of us and offers us a free ride. Because
we are young and fragile in that time, we agreed and get inside the tricycle. But we sensed that
something is going bad to happen when the old man told us that we should go to their house
first. What we did is we pushed the cover of the tricycle with full force for us to get out. I
know God helped us to get through that time or else we are not here today.

Page | 19
The lesson I learned in this seminar and on our experience is that, wherever you go,
anything might happen to you. You just need to be vigilant and be aware on how you can
defend yourself. My opinion about, “girls wearing revealing clothes” is 50/50. Yes, girls can
wear whatever they want but if their motive is to seduce other people and then complain
afterwards for being harassed, then it is already their problem. Like me, sometimes I wear what
I want to wear but I also figured out that there are still people who has dirty mind and you
cannot change their attitude on a snap to know the word respect. Girls say that they wear
clothes that are revealing to feel confident, but for me, there are still many ways to feel and
show confidence without showing too much skin.
