Assessment in special education is the process used to determine a child’s specific learning strengths
and needs, and to determine whether or not a child is eligible for special education services.

Assessment in special education is a process that involves collecting information about a student for the
purpose of making decisions. Assessment, also known as evaluation can be seen as a problem-solving
process.

Teacher-created assessments, which may also be created by teams of teachers, are commonly used in a
single course or grade level in a school. In short, assessments are usually created for highly specialized
purposes.

Assessments also are used to identify individual student weaknesses and strengths so that educators can
provide specialized academic support, educational programming, and/or social services. While
assessment can take a wide variety of forms in education, the following descriptions provide a
representative overview of a few major forms of educational assessment.
