GRAPH OF EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Background Information:
Exponential Functions can be used for many real-world applications, like exponential
growth and decay as discussed in the previous section. Although working with a function
which describes a real-world scenario gives a way for making predictions, most of the time,
the function itself is not enough. People learn a lot about things by seeing their pictorial
representations, and that is exactly why graphing exponential functions is a powerful tool. 1
Given the graph, it will be showed if a certain subject is increasing or decreasing over a period
of time.
To graph an exponential function, the following steps are to be followed.
Step 1. Construct a table of values of ordered pairs for the given function.

x
f(x)
To accomplish the table of values, assign integer values to 𝑥 and find
corresponding values of 𝑓(𝑥).
Step 2. Plot the points found in the table and connect them using a smooth curve.
To begin with graphing, review the behavior of exponential growth and decay
by using the functions below and observe how the output values changes as the input
increases by 1.

Example 1. Sketch the graph of f(x) = 2x .

Solution.
Step 1: Construct a table of values of ordered pairs for the given function. Assign
integer values to 𝑥 and find corresponding values of 𝑓(𝑥).
The table of values for f(x) = 2x is as follows:
x −3 −2 −1 0 1 2 3
1 1 1
f(x) 1 2 4 8
8 4 2

Sample Solution in obtaining corresponding 𝑓(𝑥) given the value of 𝑥.

If 𝑥 = −3, then
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2 𝑥
𝑓 (−3) = 2(−3) (replace 𝑥 by −3)
1
𝑓 (−3) = 23 (Law of Negative Exponents was applied)
𝟏 1
𝒇(−𝟑) = (If 𝑥 = −3, then the output is )
𝟖 8

Notice from the table that:

 the output values are all positive for all values of 𝑥.
 as the values of 𝑥 decreases, the values of 𝑓(𝑥) also decreases.
 when 𝑥 is negative and decreasing, the value of 𝑓(𝑥) approaches zero.

Step 2: Plot the points found in the table and connect them using a smooth curve.
By looking on the accomplished table of values, there are seven (7)
ordered pairs (𝑥, 𝑦) to be plotted on the graph.

Plotting of points for 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 Graph of 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥

It can be observed that the function is defined for all values of 𝑥, is strictly increasing,
and attains only positive 𝑦 −values. As 𝑥 decreases without bound, the function approaches
0. Thus, the graph has the line 𝑦 = 0 as a horizontal asymptote.
1 x
Example 2. Sketch the graph of g(x) = (2) .

Solution.
Step 1: Construct a table of values of ordered pairs for the given function.
1 x
The table of values for g(x) = (2) is as follows:

x −3 −2 −1 0 1 2 3
1 1 1
f(x) 8 4 2 1
2 4 8

Sample Solution in obtaining corresponding 𝑓(𝑥) given the value of 𝑥.

If 𝑥 = −3, then
1 𝑥
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = ( 2)
1 (−3)
𝑓 (−3) = ( ) (replace 𝑥 by −3)
2
𝑓 (−3) = 23 (Law of Negative Exponents was applied)
𝒇(−𝟑) = 𝟖 (If 𝑥 = −3, then the output is 8)

Notice from the table that:

 the output values are all positive for all values of 𝑥.
 as the values of 𝑥 decreases, the values of 𝑓(𝑥) increases without
bound.
1 𝑥
 as the value of 𝑥 increases, the value of (2) approaches zero.

2
Step 2: Plot the points found in the table and connect them using a smooth curve.
By looking on the accomplished table of values, there are seven (7)
ordered pairs (𝑥, 𝑦) to be plotted on the graph.

It can be observed that the function is defined for all values of 𝑥, is strictly decreasing,
and attains only positive values. As 𝑥 increases without bound, the function approaches 0.
Thus, the graph has the line 𝑦 = 0 as a horizontal asymptote.
In general, depending on the value of 𝑏 (the base), whether 𝑏 > 1 or 0 < 𝑏 < 1, the
graph of 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑏 𝑥 has the following behavior:

when 𝑏 >1 when 0 < 𝑏 < 1

Properties of Exponential Functions
The following properties of 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑏 𝑥 , where 𝑏 > 0 and 𝑏 ≠ 1, can be observed from the
graph:
(a) The domain is the set of ℝ.
(b) The range is the set (0, +∞).
(c) It is a one-to-one function. It satisfies the Horizontal Line Test.
