ONE-TO-ONE AND INVERSE FUNCTIONS

Background Information for Learners

A function is considered as a one-to-one function if no two elements in the domain of f

correspond to the same element in the range of f and no two
elements in the range of f correspond to the same element in the
domain of f. In other words, each x – value in the domain has exactly
one image in the range. And, each y – value in the range has exactly
one image in the domain.

Based on this definition, only one-to-one functions have their inverse functions (denoted
by f -1 ) since their inverse is a function. To get its
inverse, we simply interchange the domain and
range. With this, the domain of the one-to-one
function will be the range of its inverse and its
range will be the domain of its inverse.

Here are some examples of one-to-one relationships found in real-life situations: (1) The
relation pairing a student to his/her Learner Reference Number (LRN), (2) the relation pairing
a student to his/her report card, (3) the relation pairing a citizen to his/her government I.D
number.

Listed below are examples of one-to-one functions and their inverse functions.

 Graphs
1. Graphs of the one-to-one function {(0, 3), (-1, 2), (-2, 1), (-3, 0)} and its inverse
{(3, 0), (2, -1), (1, -2), (0, -3)} are shown below.

You can identify if a graph represents a one-to-one function or not by using the
Horizontal Line Test. The graph is one-to-one if each horizontal line drawn in the graph
does not intersect more than one point.
 One-to-one functions in the form of f(x) and its
a. f(x) = 2x + 3
Steps
Write the function in the form y = f(x).
1
f(x) = 2x + 3 y = 2x + 3
Interchange the x and y variables.
2
y = 2x + 3 x = 2y + 3
Solve for y in terms of x.
x = 2y + 3
x - 3 = 2y

b. g(x) = x3 – 4

Steps
Write the function in the form y = f(x).
1
g(x) = x3 - 4 y = x3 - 4
Interchange the x and y variables.
2
y = x3 - 4 x = y3 - 4
Solve for y in terms of x.
