Assessment #6. Listen to "Mrs. Potato Head" by Melanie Marquez.

1. Explain what message she is sending in her music.

The lines "You can buy a couple of ornaments" and "You can always call a professional.
They stick pins in you like a vegetable." indicated that most people nowadays use
cosmetics, beauty products, or surgeries with the hope of changing their image as they
feel insecure with their current self. Despite the pain an individual has to undergo in
surgeries, people still pursue this option to keep up with the trend. "Just be sure to check
the warning, kids," is advice from the lyricist to take caution, as the trends change over
time, and surgery outcomes are permanent.

"Baby soft skin turns into leather" signifies that their bodies' changes are not authentic.
The thinking of "No one will love you if you are unattractive" pushed people to undergo
surgeries to make themselves 'beautiful'. In the chorus, the lyricist stated that one's new
face is temporary. It can make an individual beautiful, according to society's standard, for
a while. However, it can wither through time. The lyricist may be implying that
individuals should take such decisions seriously as individuals cannot reverse their
actions. Moreover, some people are born beautiful like their mothers - "When little girls
grow into their mother's face." However, society has brainwashed individuals that the
definition of beauty includes a golden ratio face, plump lips, high nose, sleek eyebrows,
etc.

Therefore, Mrs. Potato Head by Melanie Martinez indicates that every individual is
beautiful in their own ways. Society is not the basis of beauty but a manipulator of one's
mind. Beauty is not the face but a light in the heart (Kahlil Gibran).

2. Discuss what lines struck you the most.

"No one will love you if you are unattractive."
Most people think that this statement is true. People believe that an unattractive
appearance is unlovable. In today's society, people often judge others by their
appearance. If a person has tattoos, society thinks that an individual is involved in drugs
or a member of a violent organization. If a person has dark skin, they are not beautiful.
Most people are interested in being acquainted and loving beautiful individuals. If you
are beautiful, there is a long line of desperate people who wants to know and love you.
However, if one's appearance does not meet society's standard, an individual is ignored,
neglected, and mistreated.
Nonetheless, this statement is false. An individual only feels attraction, but not love. An
attractive person has a perfect body and a gorgeous face, but a beautiful individual has a
pleasing personality and soul. Love takes time, and it does not happen at first sight.
