ASSESSMENTS

1. What is mental health? Why does it matter to advocate and address mental health
issues?

Physical health is the state of individual’s physical body. Mental health is nearly
just the same as physical health, where they talk about well-being of humans. However,
mental health is a state of individuals’ emotion or behavior. Mental health matters, too.
As people only look at the external state of others, they tend to forget that simple smile
and laugh can hide what someone really feels or going through. Someone might be
stressed or depressed and it’s easy and very possible to hide it. That’s why addressing
mental health issues is vital.

2. Ask someone to share a story, experience, or circumstance in his/ her life. It can be
about his/her family, studies, friends, or self. Afterwards, answer the following questions.

a. How do you feel about the story you just heard? What was your first reaction?
How about as the story unfolded?

I have a friend and someone in her family recently died. I got instantly
shocked and at the same time, she is mourning and creating requirements for her
school. I can honestly tell that she’s having a very hard time. I hope that after she
shared her problems to me, she’ll feel a little bit good.

b. What were your thoughts regarding the signs and symptoms of this mental health
issue? Have you experienced any of these yourself or in someone you know?

Mental health issues are difficult to notice. You cannot easily distinguish if
they have certain issues going through in their life. As for me, I definitely
experienced these. I just found a way to release my problems and anxiety. Just
find something where you can just throw away your problems or face it with a
better solution.

c. How would you react if you noticed these in someone you care about?

I would definitely reach them out. I know I don’t have the best words, but
just being there for them while they share their problems can give a big change in
their current state. It is just like a room full of smoke, the room represents their
mind, and the smoke is their problems; if they did not open up their windows,
they’ll end up suffocated.
d. How might taking action benefit you and the person you care about?

It can lessen the level of their problems. It can also benefit me because I
will have more experience in dealing this kind of situation. The person I care
about will be much closer to me and will have the strength to open up more of
their problems and experiences.

e. What actions could you take to help someone who is exhibiting these signs and
symptoms?
Actions I might take to help someone who shows signs and symptoms of
mental health anomaly can be a hug, talking to them or just by listening to their
problems. You can do any fancy actions. However, take note that just being there
for them in their worst days is a very big help to them.

f. What do you believe is important for anyone to be aware of if they know

someone with this mental health issue?
It is important for anyone to be aware if they know someone with this
mental health issue because, like what I have said earlier, smile or laughter can
hide all the stress, depression, anxieties and other mental health problems. I can
be difficult to distinguish what they’re going through right know but we should be
keener and more aware if we can.

g. What experiences have you had that are related to this story? What was similar?
What differed?
I have experienced certain issues about my mental health too. Just like
the above cases, I also hide my stress by laughing and smiling. But I think I
overcame my stress because recently, I have been doing some outdoor activities
such as biking and swimming around. I think I found a way to release my stress
and overflowing emotions.
