During a birthday party of Alyssa, the caterer, uses 40 small square tables to make a long
rectangular table. If each small table can seat only one person on a side, how many people can
be seated at the long table?
The answer is 82.
SOLUTIONS:
Provided that there are 40 small square tables and 1 person able to seat on opposite sides.
With that information we can come up with 1 = 2. So, if there 40 tables, there are 80 people
because of 40 x 2 = 80. And since it is a table, there is 1 person per end of the table which
makes it 2 people. Therefore, 80 + 2 = 82.
The formula of the perimeter may also be used. The formula is P=2L + 2W. Substituting with the
info of a table, we can use P=2(40) + 2(1). 40 is substituted for L since there are 40 tables and 1
is substituted for W.
To calculate:
P=2(40) + 2(1)
P= 80 + 2
P = 82
