UNDERGROUND GARBAGE SYSTEM

1 An automated vacuum waste collection system also know as pneumatic refuse collection. In this
process the underground pneumatic tubes are place at a station. When the container will be
filled it will be transported away and emptied
2 This system helps to facilitate separation and recycling of waste
3 The process begins with the deposit of trash into intake hatches called portholes, which may be
specialized for waste, recycling or compost
4 The portholes are located in public areas and on private where the owners has opted in.
5 The waste is pulled through an underground pipelines by air pressure
6 The system of underground garbage system was created in Sweden in 1960’s designed by the
Swedish corporation.
7 The first installation was in 1961 at solleftea hospital.

8 In march 2015 the city of montreal abandoned its $ 3 million inverstment in a plan to install
an automated vacuum collection system.
9 The success of the underground containers lies in its superior holding capacity and
environmental protection attained over traditional surface waste containers.
10 The greater holding capacity than of the same area’s surface dumpsters/bins requiring less
frequent collection.
11 Compaction of waste (through gravity or by mechanical means) increasing their effective
capacity by 1.5 to 2.5 times.
12 Improved aesthetic allowing their incorporation in the city’s design.
13 Limited maintenance requirement and superior protection against vandalism.
Undergrod space development
Underground space refers to a space that is situated below ground level. Surface space is accordingly
defined as a space (built or unbuilt) found above ground level, with the latter defined as the natural
elevation of the surface of the ground. underground space can provide the setting for activities or
infrastructures that are difficult, impossible, environmentally undesirable to be installed above ground.
According to Ronka et al.

In 1998 underground space has divided into different categories:

 general public facilities, such as swimming pools and connectors between subways,
 traffic spaces and transportation system, such as mass transit, roadways and parking facilities,
 technical maintenance facilities, such as waste, water and sewerage treatments, power
generation and corridors for the utility pipelines and cabling,
 industrial / production
 facilities such as temperature controlled storage, storage and logistic warehouses, noisy and
dusty processing.
The underground vacuum system is used in more than 30 countries there are close to a thousand
system in operation all over the world.

A underground vacuum system is said to be the largest in the united states. And the only system in the
U.S serving a residential complex in this case nearly 10,000 people.

In the U.S this types of system is installed in several places but Disney world are the best known.

Disney world (FL, USA)

The underground automated vacuum collection waste (AVAC) system in disney world, Florida, was put
into operation in the early 1970’s and was the first underground waste collection scheme ever employed
in the united states. The system operate on 24 hour basis and transport the waste from all point around
the park to a central location where they are processed and recycled. The pipe infrastructure is located
inside the utility tunnel network that is developed below ground level. The main network consist of
around 2km of pipes and facilitates a total area of 1,200,000 m.

Roosevelt Island (NY, USA)

The Roosevelt island automated vacuum assisted collections systems (AVAC) was commissioned in 1975
and since then it handles 10 tons of waste on a daily basis from the island’s 16 apartment complexes. It
eliminates the necessity of noisy and potential dangerous collection trucks on the island narrow and
densely populated streets. Unsightly and odorous piles of bags and dirty dumpsters are non-existents
facilitating to a cleaner , healthier amd quieter environment for the people pf Roosevelt island.
Wembley city (great Britain)

The wembley city is a major urban development project covering 85 acres of land, surrounding the
wembley stadium. It comprises of 4,200 flats, as well as retail shopping hotel and leisure facilities. The
automated waste collection system is operating there from 2008 handles 160 tons of waste per week.

It has total of 252 inlet points used for the collections of four fractions of waste. The inlet points are
installed in each apartment building, near the exit area, in which residents dispose the waste.
Underground waste collection system.
 The underground waste collection system can be discerned into two major categories
the first category of underground collection system is considered to follow a more
traditional approach, where waste containers are replaced by underground collection
points.
 These points are usually employing the underground or semi-underground placement of
containers, sited in excavated shafts usually 2-3 m deep, having only their inlets in the
surface environment.
 The waste containers are in the form of cylinders shape as shown in fig. usually placed
along public right-of-ways. The capacity of these containers range from 0.6 to 5m.
 There greater portion is buried underground, where as on ground level only the inlet
structure with the characteristic shape is visible.

In India the first underground garbage system was constructed in surat ; Gujarat
The surat underground garbage system has shown the way to delhi and other big cities.

That are struggling to manage garbage spilling out of “Dhalaos” and filling the air with foul
smell. Each of bins which can contain up to 1.5 tonnes of waste

As a part of smart city mission and thex fitted with sensors to send alerts to
control room as soon as 70% of container is full.
Surat gets city awards for implementation of projects under smart city mission the award was
announced on june 20 by ministry of housing and urban affairs government of india.
