LGBT+ YP Advocate
Background Information

About Galop
Galop is the leading LGBT+ anti-violence and abuse charity working with lesbians, gay men,
bi, queer, trans, non-binary and intersex people. For over 35+ years, Galop has supported
LGBT+ people who experience abuse and has worked to promote equal, fair, and inclusive
access to criminal justice and other services.

Galop leads strategic development nationally and regionally around hate crime, domestic
abuse and sexual violence experienced by LGBT+ victim/survivors. We are engaged at a
strategic level to ensure issues affecting LGBT+ people and communities remain high on the
agenda of commissioners, decision-makers, service providers and law-makers.

Galop is an independent organisation and its services are confidential and free. We have
substantial expertise in developing high quality services and support that meet the needs of
LGBT+ victim/survivors. We work in partnership with others so that understanding and
provision around sexual violence, domestic abuse and hate crime is inclusive of LGBT+
people’s voices and experiences.

At Galop, we believe that life should be safe, just and fair for all LGBT+ people, and that
includes the experiences of our staff in the workplace. We believe in equity and understand
the importance of inclusion for staff with a wide range of lived experience. No matter your
age, race, faith, orientation, gender identity, disability, or class, we want you to feel
welcome here. To that end Galop has a multi-year EDI plan in place, currently focusing on
equity and inclusion for trans and BAMER members of staff. In line with this plan, we
actively welcome applications from trans and BAMER people, who are currently
underrepresented in the organisation.

About Galop’s Young People’s Services

This role will bring much needed capacity to Galop’s growing Young People’s team, which
has seen its work with young people double during the pandemic, with a significantly
increased level of risk, complexity and escalating violence and abuse within young people’s
situations. We currently have two advocates in the team, one full-time and one part-time,
who are working with demanding caseloads. We therefore look forward to having another
advocate join the team.

The work of the team involves interventions and support for LGBT+ young people around
sexual violence and exploitation, domestic abuse, honour based violence, forced marriage,
hate crime, homelessness, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. The service also offers

LGBT+ young people the space to reflect and learn about consent and healthy relationships.
A growing proportion of our work is with children: 40% of the under-18s we work with
identify as trans or non-binary and over 70% identify as BAME, so the ability to understand
inter-sectional identities and work effectively with a diverse range of LGBT+ young people is
essential to this post.

The service is firmly based in trauma-informed and empowerment based perspectives,

alongside rigorous safeguarding practice. The work demands that advocates have a calm,
positive attitude; are organised; and are excellent communicators with young people and
external agencies. Although demanding, the work is hugely rewarding when we enable a
young person to be safe and to feel empowered about their life and who they are.

The post holder will be part of a close-knit team, which works together to share knowledge,
skills and support. We take a proactive approach to self-care and mutual support and look
for team members who are reflective about their practice. The team is passionate about
enabling all LGBT+ young people to grow into self-aware, empowered adults whose lives can
flourish beyond the difficulties they currently face.

The Young People’s team is currently managed within the Sexual Violence Support Service,
the UK’s only dedicated, specialist sexual violence service aimed at all LGBT+ people aged
13+. It has been at the forefront of putting issues relating to LGBT+ survivors on the agenda
in London and further afield. The Service provides free, confidential support for LGBT+
people in London who have experienced sexual assault, violence or abuse, however or
whenever it happened. It is actively involved in working on issues of child and adult sexual
exploitation, sexual violence in a chemsex context, and that experienced by trans and non-
binary people, as well as working with a wide range of LGBT+ survivors.

About the role

Galop is delighted to offer an additional role in our Young People’s team. We are looking for
someone with experience and aptitude to work with the diversity of LGBT+ children and
young people, alongside a strong commitment to professional and boundaried work. This is
a demanding role that requires someone able to manage complex casework and work
collaboratively with a team of colleagues. The work requires a high standard of safe,
professional conduct within an understanding of trauma and the ability to engage with
LGBT+ children and young people.

We welcome applications from BAME and/or trans and non-binary applicants, as work with
BAME, trans and non-binary young people is an important part of the team’s work.

There is an essential requirement under the Sexual Orientation Regulations 2003 that the
post holder has experience of LGBT+ needs and the impact of discrimination.
