VOLCANOES
In the past, people thought volcanoes were mountains of fire. Nowadays, we know they are openings in the surface of the Earth.
There are about 1.500 active volcanoes around the world. Most of these are in an area called the Ring of Fire. It´s around the
Pacific Ocean.

The surface of the Earth is made of large plates of rock. These are called tectonic plates. These tectonic plates are moving all the
time and volcanoes usually come up where these plates meet.In these places , the rock becomes very hot and melts. This is
called magma. When magma comes to the surface, it´s called lava. The lava can run like water. but over time, it builds up into a
volcano.

One of the most world´s most active volcanoes is Kilauea in Hawaii. It´s a popular destination for many tourists. You can stand
close to the Kilauea and feel its heat. But some volcanoes are more dangerous. Mount Vesuvius is one of the most famous
volcanoes in history. it buried the city of Pompeii two thousand years ago. Two thousand people died under the lava, gas and hot
ash.
But volcanoes don´t always destroy life. volcanoes have also created 80 per cent of the Earth´s surface, which means that
humans and animals can live, and plants can grow, on the ground created by volcanoes.
