The cityscape of Pune in 22nd century does portay an urban picture, yet the areas
addressed as peths or wadas, in a instant commemorate the deep rooted history of
the state. Once home to the Peshwas, the city hosts not only several forts but also
the typical Maharashtrian houses.

A few key elements of the wadas were the thick walls, strategic zoning of spaces
around the internal courtyard and waterbody and stone – was used lavishly as a
principal material.

The architect’s consciously decided to use ‘likely to get extinct’ local and manual
skills. The thought as designers one should consciously utilise the platform to
allow artisans to display their work. The focus was not on any special construction
techniques but it was to review the old wisdom for which once upon a time we as
Indians were known all over the globe. High pressure laminates have been used for
windows and doors as door panels are sandwiched between two glass sheets with
motif cut out on panels.

The architectural design and the interior design is based on minimalist approach
focusing more on the space that it shapes up and less on the materials. The external
stone work is done by local craftsmen and locally available stone. The light which
filters through these panels looks beautiful and acts as fenestrations.

The spaces are accentuated by several art and craft pieces which are of relevance to the
traditional roots of Maharashtra. Elements like typical motifs, use of Maharashtrian
sarees in form of curtains and soft furnishings, employment of old carved wooden
columns and brackets from a demolished Maharashtrian wada – all evoke a sense
of traditional belonging.

The project was to be completed in 15 months including the civil work and the
interiors. Being in a housing society came in work time restrictions of 7 am to 7 pm
and no work on Sundays.
Many craftsmen were involved and there was a particular sequence to be followed. The
design of the residence is based on a module derived from old typical Maharashtrian
wada. All the elements are typical. A mock-up of different elements was executed in
a work shop shed away from the site. All the building elements were standardized
followed by production and assembly. Fusion of ‘old wisdom and new technology’
makes this house a timeless architecture.
