Teamwork

Ok everyone, let’s get down to business. It’s a pleasure to welcome all of you come and join
this meeting. I think everybody has known each other before so we will turn to the objectives
of this meeting. We’re here today to discuss the concerns of staff and then I will present our
recommendations to the Board of Directors. As you see from the agenda, there are 3 items:
the first one is relocation plans of the company, the second is about team working and the last
one is disciplinary action on Peter Bergman. I suggest we take them in this order and keep
each item to 10 minutes, otherwise we’ll never get through. So, Phuong, would you like to
start?

Right, I think that covers the first item. If nobody has anything else to add, I would come to
conclusion about this: our company won’t move to anywhere due to lots of consequences; in
case the Board of Directors still keep their mind to relocate the company, staffs should be
given some benefits such as supporting traveling expenses, increasing salary to encourage
their will to work in new environment, building supermarket and so on.

Let’s move on to the next item. Linh, please present your ideas.

I have noted everything you have discussed. About this item, you want to give some
following recommendations: first, in terms of workers, they should vote for a leader, who can
supervise the teamwork’s process and then till the end of a month, he or she will give team
members a work report so that everyone can evaluate and comment on each other. Moreover,
in terms of company, they should have a policy to give salaries according to working
qualification in team working of employees, if anyone performs well, they will get the bonus.
Is that OK?

OK, the last item on the agenda is disciplinary action on Peter Bergman. Dung, please tell us.

So everybody has come to conclusion that Peter Bergman still should be disciplined but he
just has to make up for the loss money of our company, if he can’t afford it, he must work
without salary for about 2-3 months. Also, the head of the accounts department should take
responsibilities that his monthly salary will be cut down twice for 3 months or more for not
managing his subordinate well.

OK, everyone I suggest that we stop our meeting here and I will present all of your
recommendations to the Board of Directors.
A:
- Good morning, I am the European manager. I have been offered a fantastic job by our
new boss in Brussels.
- In some aspects, I would like to propose that I can commute from my home to
Brussels in a weekly basis. I will travel home every Monday morning and back in
every Friday evening.
- From my point of view, I think my proposal can bring some benefits to both company
and me also. I will be more productive when I am away from my family, I can just
focus on my work without being disturbed by the noise from my children or doing
some necessary things to take care for them and I will not have the extra worry of their
adjusting to a different environment. Therefore, I can devote myself greatly to the
development of our company. And the second is that commuting back and forth will
be able to save a lot of money in relocation costs. If the company is relocated, it will
take really much time and cost much money in many aspects, such as finding houses
for employees, making sure that employees can be used to new working environment
and have enough necessary things and so on.
- If necessary, I can give up my company car at home to pay for the cost of the weekly
return plane. That’s why you don’t have to think really much about the air fare. It’s
not too expensive.
- I was really expected and looked forward to continuing my job in a new environment
but you know, it will be hard for us to adapt and adjust for a different place. Therefore,
although feel really pity, I would like to say that I have to consider about trying a
different job. Thank you for offering me such a potential and fantastic job. Wish you
all successful in the near future.
B:
- Good morning, I am the manager of a new joint venture whose head office is in
Brussels
- I have caught up with your proposal that you want to commute from your home to
Brussels in a weekly basis like travel home every Monday morning and back in every
Friday evening but all other recruits have agreed to move. It is the order of the
company.
- I can see your points but you know it would be awkward if I treat you differently from
the others. They will feel there is no fair and what if people find it depressed and quit
job? Everyone must be equal, and just it can create a friendly and comfortable working
atmosphere.
- Although you have the ability to pay for the cost of the weekly return plane, it will still
be very expensive. You can think about the expense you have to pay for weekly plane
in just a year and calculate, it must be a really huge amount of money while our
company has to do everything to save money for the other kind of necessary activities
and projects and so on.
- Moreover, too much traveling will make you feel tired. You have to work with a high
intensity, you must lose a lot of energy and then, you have to travel home in a long
way and long time, and that will cause a less productivity on your work. When your
mind and body are in low battery, it is hard to work productively as you are in your
best state.
- I see, I also feel lots of pity when you cannot come with us in the next stage for some
reasons. However, I think that it is also good when you can find a new job which is
more suitable in your living place, and whenever I have any chances of good jobs, I
will contact you. Wish you happy and success in the future. Thank you.
