Are we differentiating positions enough?
True False
POSITIONS
• Position descriptions are based on history, not strategic or
customer value.
• Most positions are paid at market midpoint.
• Recruitment for all positions has the same effort and budget.
• Same selection process is used for all positions.
• Employees, not the company, owns the firm’s positions.
• Very little developmental rotation occurs.
• Little “C” work is outsourced or eliminated.
• Little differentiation between strategic, support and surplus
work.
¿Diferenciamos suficientemente los cargos?
Verda-
dero
Falso
CARGOS
excedente.

What workforce do we want to attract?
Firm A vs. Firm B
Firm B: The last thing we want to be is an “employer of choice.” All that does is dramatically increase
the number of unqualified or marginal applicants, which increases the probability of selection and
placement errors and increases the transaction processing costs of our selection systems as we deal
with many applicants who don’t fit our organization. This is very expensive and unnecessary if we are
effective in communicating the appropriate message to our potential workforce. Our strategy is to build
a distinct employment brand by seeking the “employee of choice” and differentiating among the best
candidates in the marketplace by having them self-select even before they apply. We want all
applicants to understand that this is a demanding, high-performance organization, and to make a
determination of whether this is a place where they will fit, where their skills and motivation will fit our
culture. To achieve this, we try to communicate in every possible interaction that this is a place that
values exceptional talent and exceptional effort. For those employees, we provide exceptional pay
and exceptional developmental opportunities. We cannot be everything to everyone, and we do not
want to be.
