A System for Mobile Assisted Living

Abstract:
A system for mobile assisted living system is presented which supports
mobile assisted living by combining the advantages of smart sensors, GPS and
GSM technology. The system can detect abnormal situations with the person
wearing the wearable part of the system (e.g. abnormal heart rate) and send this
information to the nursing home so that appropriate action can be taken
immediately. The information sent by the system to the nursing home includes the
current location of the person on the earth in the form of longitude and latitude.
This location information is what makes the system support mobile assisted living.
Sensor nodes are of two types: ones that person has to wear (e.g. blood pressure,
pulse rate sensors etc.) and others which are installed in home (e.g. door sensors,
pressure sensors etc.). The base station collects data from these sensor nodes and if
there is any abnormal situation, sends that data to the nearest nursing home so that
appropriate action can be taken immediately. There is one limitation with these
systems; these can work as long as person is inside the house. In our system, any
wearable sensor node will have two things in addition: GSM module and a GPS
module. GPS module here is for keeping track of location of the person when he is
out of the house. GSM module here is for informing the nursing home about any
abnormal situation when person is out of house.
Problem statement:

1. Controlling devices to be manual operation

2. Communication between devices for controlled to be short distance

Proposed system:

1. Detect Abnormal Situation

2. Reliability
3. Easy usage
4. Support elderly people
5. Immediate Action

The proposed system supports mobile assisted living by combining the advantages
of smart sensors, GPS and GSM technology. Already designed assisted living
systems provide monitoring of patient as long as the patient is inside the house.
When he wants to move out, someone has to accompany him to take care of any
abnormal situations that can occur with him on the way. With our system, the
patient can be on the move without any companion and he is still being monitored.
This gives them a feeling of being more independent. Our system takes care of
informing any abnormal situation with the patients to nursing home along with
their location information in case they are on move
