JUDUL 1: THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERNET IN THE
PROCESS OF LEARNING ENGLISH DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
IN MTs TPI SILAU DUNIA

A. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

In 2020, all countries were in an uproar with the emergence of the corona
virus or what is known as (Covid-19). This virus was first discovered in Wuhan,
China. Coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) is an infectious disease caused by the acute
respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (Sars-CoV-2). This disease outbreak greatly
shook the world community, considering that almost 200 countries in the world were
affected by this virus, including Indonesia. Therefore, we are currently in an era with
more complicated and challenging demands. An era with certain specifications that
turned out to be very influential on the economy, world of education and
employment.

The transmission of the virus is very fast and has spread to various countries
throughout the world, including Indonesia. The entry of this virus in Indonesia was
reported at the end of January 2020, which until now is still spreading in Indonesia.
Because the corona virus is very dangerous, the government also requires people to
practice social distancing at least two meters from other people and avoid crowds to
prevent disease transmission. Social distancing does not mean cutting off ties with
family or other people. The government imposed a lockdown system in public places
such as malls, tourist attractions, and even mosques, with a limited number of
congregations. People are prohibited from leaving the area without a permit. This
lockdown system is considered effective to reduce the number of transmissions of
Covid-19, which we cannot see the form of the virus with the naked eye.

The condition of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in extraordinary


changes, including in the field of education. It is as if all levels of education are

forced to transform to adapt suddenly drastically, namely doing learning from home
through online media. All schools from elementary to tertiary levels are required to
conduct online learning so that they require a distance communication medium so
that learning can run properly.

Social media is a new breakthrough for carrying out learning. Not a few
parents complain about this online distance learning media (internet). Especially for
parents who work from home (WFH), they must continue to accompany their
children, especially early childhood. Therefore, the role of educators in choosing the
use of learning resources must now be more careful, because it is very influential on
the process of implementing learning in the sense that educators must analyze
learning resources that are suitable and needed in learning in accordance with the
material and learning objectives. Currently the learning system is implemented
through Personal Computers (PCs), laptops and gadgets that can be connected to the
internet. Although the learning process cannot be done face-to-face, learning must
run well and smoothly.

The use of social media in distance learning during the current pandemic has a
very important role with the increasingly rapid development of information
technology. How to design effective and efficient distance learning resources for
students, choosing learning resources that can provide convenience for students to
learn, learning resources that can be used as effectively as possible to support success
in learning.

Social media is considered capable of supporting the learning process, the use
of social media such as YouTube, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Classroom, Zoom
and so on can facilitate the learning process from home during the covid-19
pandemic. Thus, the ongoing learning of Islam through social media is easily
accessible to students and teachers.

In junior secondary learning, MTs TPI Silau Dunia is one of the schools that
has established an online learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic by
utilizing the use of social media to support the distance learning process.

Based on the explanation above taken from aspects of life regarding one of the
impacts of the covid-19 pandemic, the authors are interested in conducting research
with the title; “THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERNET IN THE
PROCESS OF LEARNING ENGLISH DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
at MTs TPI SILAU DUNIA”

B. RESEARCH QUESTION

Based on the research problem stated previously, the researcher formulates the
research questions as follows “What is the role of Social Media and Internet in the
Process of learning English during the Covid-19 Pandemic at MTs TPI Silau
Dunia?”

C. OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

Based on the background of the problem above, the focus of this research is as
follows: "The role of social media (Youtube and Whatsapp) in the process of learning
English during the Covid-19 period at MTs TPI Silau Dunia".

JUDUL 2: THE STUDENT’S PERCEPTION OF THE MEDIA SOCIAL USED
IN LEARNING ENGLISH CLASS (in the Students of MTs TPI Silau Dunia)

A. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Nowadays, media social has become a foremost part of our lives as people
worldwide are spending many hours on this media. Media social used through mobile
phones and computers is intended to help people convey their ideas, collaborate, and
communicate efficiently. Besides, people use social for many purposes, such as
finding information, maintaining friendship, and expressing multiple identities.

Although media social is not directly created for educational purpose, it has
drawn attention from educators, especially in English language teaching field. Several
studies were conducted to know whether media social can be used in English
classroom. It is said that media social provides an active English language
environment for students to supports their learning process. English is mostly used in
social media since it is recognized as one of international languages. The active
English environment provided by media social exposes students into an English rich
exposure which support their language development.

Recently, the world is facing covid-19 pandemic. Schools, and universities are
closed for an indefinite time. It changes the learning process, which is generally held
in the classroom, into online learning. Teacher try to use media social in their
teaching despite they did not know much about how their students use media social to
improve their English. Since students are the center of the learning process, their
perception of the teaching practice is worth knowing in helping teachers create
teaching activities that are close to their students.

Based on the explanation above, a study on students’ perception of the use of
social media for learning English is important to be investigated since teachers need
to know their students’ preferences in terms of what media social application they
used and their ways of using media social for learning English. Studies on exploring
high school students’ view on media social for learning English in Indonesia are
relatively low. Therefore, this study is conducted to provide valuable information
about how high-school students use media social, the advantages and challenges
students face while using media social to learn English.

B. RESEARCH QUESTION

Based on the research problem stated previously, the researcher formulates


research questions as follows:

1. How is student’s perception in using media social for learning English?


2. What are the advantages and challenges that student’s perceived in using
media social for learning English?

C. OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

Based on the background problem above, the object of this study in the
research is “The students’ perception of the use of media in Learning English
class at the MTs TPI Silau Dunia”

JUDUL 3: IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ READING SKILL THROUGH
TRANSLATION METHOD

A. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Reading is a tool of communication in written language through the texts


form. It is the most efficient way to gain information about many aspects of life,
including science and technology. By reading, people can absorb a number of
information. Reading has a very important role and becomes a daily necessity for
every person who wants to acquire whatever information which is required. Reading
is an essential skill for learners of English as a foreign language. For most of learners
it is the most important skill to master in order to ensure success not only in learning
English, but also in learning in any content class where reading in English is required.
With strengthened reading skills, learners will make greater progress and
development in all other areas of learning.

Reading is a vital skill for everyone, including students. Mickulecky &


Jeffries (2004) say that reading is very important since it can enhance students’
general language skills in English; assisting students to think in English, enlarging
students’ English vocabulary, improving their writing, and it can be a good way to
obtain about new ideas, facts and experiences. Therefore, on the basis of this opinion,
the reading skill has been viewed as something that can help students to enrich their
insight in English language.

According to Harmer (2003) reading is one of the receptive skills of English.


Yet, the four language skills are closely related to each other. The ability to read texts
in English is important as a bridge to understand the textbook. If students continue

their studies to the senior high school and university, they are required to understand
many books written in English.

In teaching and learning reading skill there are a number of particular


problems which will need to be addressed. The first problem is reading
comprehension. The problems are related to background knowledge, cultural
knowledge, and knowledge of text type. Background knowledge is the students’
previous knowledge or knowledge of the world. If students lack prior knowledge in
reading a text, they cannot understand it because they do not know what the text is
about. A reader uses background knowledge to integrate new information from a text
into his prior information. In addition, cultural differences affect reading
comprehension. An unfamiliar cultural context and content knowledge of culture and
knowledge of vocabulary cause problems in reading, because the students do not
clearly understand the other culture. In addition, an inadequate knowledge of text
type is a problem in reading texts. The text type such as newspaper articles, fairy
tales, and business letters, if the students do not know what kind of the text, they
cannot understand what the text is about. Students can understand a text if they are
familiar with the text type (Alderson, 2002 in Chawang, 2008).

The second problem is limited vocabulary. The problem involves difficulties


with words. These difficulties include problems with technical vocabulary, super
ordinates, synonyms, antonyms, and words with several meanings. Students will have
great difficulty in understanding the text as a whole because lack vocabulary. To be
successful, they have to recognize a high proportion of the vocabulary (Paren, 1996 in
Harmer, 2003).

The third problem is complex and very long sentences. According to


Chawwang (2008) complex sentences are sentences that contain many clauses or
reduced clauses and abstract concepts. Harmer (2003) says that texts with longer
sentences will be more difficult to understand than shorter sentences.

In overcoming the problems in teaching reading, the researcher utilized
translation method. Translation method is the process of rendering written language
that was produced in one language (the source language) into another (the target
language), or the target language version that results from this process. Translation in
which more emphasis is given to overall meaning than to exact wording is known as
free translation. A translation that approximates to a word for word representation of
the original is known as a literal translation. A translation that has been produced by a
computer is known as a machine translation. The terms translation and interpretation
are often used interchangeably. While both activities involve transferring a message
between two different languages, translation refers to transfer between written texts
and interpretation refers to spoken discourse and the unrehearsed transfer of a spoken
message from one language to another (Richards &Schmidt, 2002).

B. RESEARCH QUESTION

Based on the research problem stated previously, the researcher formulates research
questions as follows: “How to improve students reading skill through the
translation Method?”

C. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Based on the background above, the object of study in the research to be


carried out is the influence of Translation Method can improve students’ Reading
skills at MTs TPI Silau Dunia.
