CELEBRITIES ENJOY THE LEVERAGE OF GETTING AWAY WITH CRIMES

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, today I stand here vehemently supporting the topic,
“Celebrities enjoy the leverage of getting away with crimes. Since time immemorial, those in power
have always enjoyed the leverage of getting away with their misdeeds. It is well-known that
celebrities have been committing crimes and getting little more than a slap on the
wrist for their actions for years on end. From Salman Khan’s drug case to Sanjay Dutt’s
illegal ammunitions case, celebrities have always got what they wanted. Ladies and gentlemen, for
some, these superstars act as role models, any child’s first dream is to become an actor but do these
people really deserve this respect?

Dear opponents a very simple explanation for this bias could be money. Money has always drived
humans, and our celebrities have plenty of it. They easily give away millions and any record of them
ever committing a crime is erased from the face of the earth. celebrities have resources and
connections that average citizens do not. They have the money to afford high-end
attorneys that can get someone out of nearly any charge.
If we look into examples, my list can go on and on, Dear opponents, Take the parent trap
star Lindsay Lohan, even after being jailed once, she has continued to commit more and
more crimes, including breaking probation, for which a common person would have faced a
life sentence, but she is a celebrity and ladies and gentlemen, celebrities do not face life
sentences. Our very own, Bollywood’s superstar Salman Khan has been involved in
numerous criminal activities, one for example was the poaching of the rare species of
Blackbuck for which he was even given a 5 year sentence but came out in a mere few
months.
My opponents it’s time for you to realise that by these discrepancies our democracy is being
questioned, one cannot help but wonder why in a country with a fair and independent
judiciary powerful men and women are protected at the cost of those who are weaker.
Now for my turncoat.
While talking about celebrities, people tend to forget that they are humans, a small wardrobe
malfunction, a word said wrong or even repeating their outfits become topics of national
importance. Ladies and gentlemen, we humans have a habit of typecasting, I know my
words will sound hollow when I say that not all celebrities are protected, but unfortunately
this is the truth.
Names of Raj Kundra and Sushil Kumar have been all over the news these past few weeks.
Sushil Kumara the pride of our nation, a 2-time Olympic medal winner, is accused of murder
and is rightly serving his time in police custody. Another name, Raj Kundra who had been
accused of his involvement in illegal activities has also been taken in indefinite police
custody. And ladies gentlemen, Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt’s story does not need
telling, he is a testimony to the fact that celebrities do not enjoy the leverage of getting away
with their crimes.
My dear opponents, these superstars are given way more than the required limelight,
shadowing others misdeeds, they are always under the media scanner and take away the
focus from the harsh reality.
Thank you
