KS3 English Curriculum Plan 2014-15

Students have 7 or 8 hours allocated to their study of English per fortnight.


These lessons are split into Core Curriculum lessons (5 per fortnight) and Skills
& Reading sessions (2 or 3 per fortnight).

Year 7 - Contents summary

Reading An Anthology of reading, based on the theme of starting school.
A range of text types, written at a range of times.

Reading The study of a novel: Skellig/Holes/The Boy in Striped Pyjamas
Extracts from literary non-fiction and media texts on the theme of
growing up
Writing Letter writing; Persuasive writing; Writing a newspaper article
Grammar Focus on punctuation and sentence structures. Revision of
common homophones and spelling strategies.
Spoken Language Structured discussion work
Unexpected Happenings
Reading Shakespeare – a range of extracts from Hamlet, Macbeth,
Midsummer Night’s Dream. Poetry and short stories.
Writing Narrative Writing – short story and poetry
Grammar Focus on Parts of Speech, apostrophes and continued work on
spelling
Spoken Language Drama and role play
Year 8 - Contents summary
War and Conflict
Reading Study of a novel: Private Peaceful or Stone Cold. A range of war
poetry, letters and diaries.
Writing Recreative writing – personal and narrative. Varying writing
according to audience and purpose
Grammar Punctuation focus – comma splicing; apostrophes; introducing
more complex punctuation. Homophones and common spellings
Spoken Language Taking part in a formal debate
Unforgettable Experiences
Reading Range of fiction and non-fiction texts grouped around a theme –
including extreme sports, mountaineering, travel.

Writing Persuasive Writing – magazine article. Arguing a point.


Grammar Spelling and parts of speech focus. Using tense correctly. Verbs.

Reading Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet. A range of poetry and short
