There still exists a double standard between males and females regarding

sexual expression. Discuss current beliefs and practices that challenge this

statement.

There is a double standard between male and female sexual expression that begins at

adolescence and proceeds until old age. Generally, young people in society assume that old

people have little to no concern about sexual intercourse. In most cases, the youths refer to

old people as sexually inactive individuals. Nevertheless, reality varies with the assumptions

greatly (Mark Stibich, 2020). From surveys done over the years and online responses from

old people, sexuality is a normal part of life among the elderly in the community. In fact,

middle-aged adults and old people state that sexuality makes them feel rich and full

throughout their adult life (2019). According to a study conducted in 2017, the National Poll

on Healthy Aging, 40% of males and females aged between 65 and 80 still participated in

sexual intercourse.

Therefore, sexual attraction is a component that lasts for most of the adult years,

irrespective of age. Sexual interests develop naturally, and it becomes a basic need in life as

the participants grow older. With the increased use of social media, a surfeit of dating sites

has emerged, and anyone can access them wherever they are. As a result, most adults can

now date freely through these sites (Mark Stibich, 2020). According to psychology and

science, intimacy is an important contribution to health, happiness, and general life

experiences. According to the Pew Research Centre survey in 2013, 6% of American citizens

aged between 55 and 64 had used several online dating websites or applications (2019). This

explains the number of people using online dating platforms to get intimacy that eventually

results in sexual intercourse.

Sexual abilities in females can start at adolescence and continue throughout their

lives. Nevertheless, age and preconception can deteriorate a female's sexual ability in old age.

This becomes a problem if these old women date males of the same age. Of late, most males

above the age of 50 are dating women half their age. While on the one hand, the women are

sexually active at the age of 25, men above the age of 50 have gained a lot of experience and

wisdom on the other hand (2019). Thus, women prefer to date these old men because of their

appearance, wisdom, and general life experience. Nevertheless, research illustrates that 35%

of women above 40 years are consistently dating young males (Crooks & Baur, 2017). Thus,

many females are marrying young males in the 21st century, unlike in the other decades.

Further studies illustrate that the attraction of older females is more prevalent than we

acknowledge. While younger females prefer to date older women, so are older women

preferring to date younger males. These cases have increased consistently over the past two

decades, thus raising so many inquiries on the sexuality of males and females (Crooks &

Baur, 2017). To bring everything into focus, male and female sexuality depends on having a

significant partner who is mature in sex. For this reason, most youths are insinuating that the

attention of older women improves their level of self-esteem and personal confidence.
