1.4 Statement of Problem and its Solutions

➢ Too many UTP cables complex organization
There are too many UTP cables in the compound going this way and that, this may result in reduction of
the internet connection speed and may only support little bandwidth.
Instead, if we use Fiber Optics cables to distribute the main network distributions, we achieve faster
network with greater bandwidth.
➢ Uncentered data center
The data center or distribution center is located at far end of the compound further than most of the
buildings, this creates uneven distribution and increase the number of cables used any significance, and
doesn’t help in terms of our complex network issue.

Compiled by Mekeyas Hirpha 3

Summer Internship In 2014 E.C

➢ The arrangement of cables

The arrangement of mettu university network infrastructure cables was not favorable because the
distribution of the cables is looped and also, there is the lack of fiber optic cables to configure the
network.

➢ Lack of enough material

➢ No internet connection for new staff in the organization

Solution of the problem

We suggest that the best solutions to the above problems are: -

➢ The Data center is more centered.

➢ The network is regionalized and easily traceable.
➢ Detecting error is easier as the networks are grouped geographically and if there is an
issue, we can go to the corresponding region to search for a faulty.
➢ Less number of cables running around.

2.2 Description of Observations
2.2.1 Networking section
According to networking section we have seen networking is simply an information exchange
between you and another person. Networks consist of the computers, wiring, and other devices,
such as switches that make up the network infrastructure. Some devices, such as network
interface cards, serve as the computer connection to the network.

Compiled by Mekeyas Hirpha 8

Summer Internship In 2014 E.C

In this part we have observed

✓ Cable punching
✓ Different materials which are used to finish those works (crippler, puncher)
✓ Switch configuration
✓ Wireless configuration
✓ Switches are keeps in the rack.
✓ Using Drill for providing flusher hole on the wale.
2.3 Wireless and wired network
2.3.1 Wireless network
A wireless network enables people to communicate and access applications and information
without wires. Wireless networking is a method by which homes, telecommunications networks
and enterprise installations avoid the costly process of introducing cables into a building, or as a
connection between various equipment locations.

2.3.2 Wireless access point

A wireless access point (WAP) is a hardware device or configured node on a local area network
that allows wireless capable devices and wired networks to connect through a wireless standard,
including Wi-Fi.

2.3.3 Wired network

The term "wired" is used to differentiate between wireless connections and those that involve
cables. While wireless devices communicate over the air, a wired setup uses physical cables to
transfer data between different devices and computer systems.
A wired network is a common type of wired configuration. Most wired networks use Ethernet
cables to transfer data between connected PCs.
Tools we used for network installation in field practice
✓ Fiber optics cable
✓ Switch
✓ cable trunk
✓ cable taster
✓ rack (sixeew cabinet)

Compiled by Mekeyas Hirpha 9

Summer Internship In 2014 E.C

✓ punch down tool

✓ drill
✓ Rj45
✓ Cat 6 cable
✓ Fiber optic punch panel
Switch
As we described a network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers
together within one local area network. Ethernet switch devices were commonly used on home
networks before home routers became popular. High-performance network switches are still
widely used in corporate networks and data centers.
Switch is a device used to interconnecting networking devices;
✓ to connect computer, printer and server with building for enabling networked device
talk to each other efficiently.
✓ It can establish a direct connection from the source to the destination without
passingthe data traffic to other networking devices
✓ The switch may have 24 or 48 ports and the switch is different based on their prices

Figure 1: Switch

Drilling Machine
We used a drill machine which creates holes in various materials. This hole will hold an anchor
screw and screw to strengthen the trunk on the wall.
We used this device in material arrangement during we adjust trucking before layering.
This device is doing by the electric power to drill the wall order to connect the trunk and node
to the wall.

Figure 3 :Router

Cable trunk

Trunk cables are pre-terminated UTP cable or fiber assemblies ordered to specific lengths, ideal
for data center infrastructures and where cable distances are reasonably predictable and can be
easily determined. As we have seen the purpose of the trunk is preventing the UTP cable and
fiber optic cable from damage.

Compiled by Mekeyas Hirpha 11

Summer Internship In 2014 E.C

Figure 4: trunk

Cable taster
A network cable tester can identify if the wires are paired correctly or not. It can also show if
there is a break in the insulation, a situation which allows crosstalk between two wires that
should not be connected. If a connection "goes to the wrong place" it is said to be "mis wired"
(the connection has two faults: it is open to the correct contact and shorted to an incorrect
contact. The tester can also tell whether the cable has the proper level of resistance. Generally, a
cable tester consists of:
✓ A source of electric current,
✓ A voltmeter
Crimping tool
Crimping tool is a tool designed to crimp or connect a connector to the end of a cable. For
example, network cables and phone cables are created using a crimping tool to connect the RJ-45
and RJ-11 connectors to the end of the cable.
We are used for crimping network cable after we finish possible order of the color for straight
through and crossover using RJ-45.

Figure 5:Crimping tool

Cables
We use the cables for the translation of data between the devices.
There are three most common types of communication cables

Compiled by Mekeyas Hirpha 12

Summer Internship In 2014 E.C

✓ twisted pair
✓ coaxial
✓ fiber optic

Twisted pair cable

Twisted pair cables are quite literally a pair of insulated wires that are twisted together to help
reduce noise from outside sources.
Coaxial cable
Coaxial cables are high-frequency transmission cables made up of a single solid-copper core
This type of cable is commonly used to deliver TV signals (its higher bandwidth makes it more
suitable for video applications) and to connect computers in a network.
Fiber optic cables
Fiber optic cable is a network cable that contains strands of glass fibers inside an insulated
casing. These cables are designed for long distance and very high bandwidth network
communications.
Punch down tool
To use the punch down tool, a wire is pre-positioned into a slotted post on a punch block, and
then the punch down tool is pressed down on top of the wire, over the post. Once the required
pressure is reached, an internal spring is triggered, and the blade pushes the wire into the slot,
simultaneously cutting the insulation and securing the wire.
Rack (sinew cabinet)
A rack is a metal frame used to hold various hardware devices such as switches, fiber optics
patch panel, cable, and other electronic equipment. A cabinet file is a library of compressed files
stored as a single file. Cabinet files are used to organize installation files that are copied to the
user's system. A large compressed file can be spread over several cabinet file.
RJ-45

✓ RJ-45 is a type of connector commonly used for Ethernet networking

✓ We used this tool commonly as a connector

Compiled by Mekeyas Hirpha 13

Summer Internship In 2014 E.C

✓ In RJ-45 “RJ” is stands for "registered jack", it is a standardized networking interface

✓ "45" is refers to the number of the interface standard.
✓ All RJ-45 connector has eight pins, which means an RJ-45 cable contains eight separate
wires.

2.4 Arrangement of UTP cable

2.4.1 Straight through cable arrangement

I use this for different type of network devices. This type of cable will be used most of the time
and can be used to:
✓ Connect a computer to a switch/hub's normal port.
✓ Connect a router's LAN port to a switch/hub's uplink port. (Normally used for expanding
network).

2.4.2 Cross over cable arrangement

I use this UTP cabling for the same type of network devices that means connecting two pieces of
equipment that have the same pin edge on both ports. Such as connecting:
✓ Connect two computers directly.
✓ Connect a router's LAN port to a switch/hub's normal port. (Normally used for expanding
network) Connect two switches/hubs by using normal port in both switches/hubs.

Steps to punch RJ45 cables:

Step 1: Make sure the stripper is adjusted properly on a scrap piece of cable. The Stripper should
be adjusted to only score the jacket to make removing it easier and not nick the twisted pairs.

Summer Internship In 2014 E.C

Step 2: Straighten the pairs out completely and lay them over the top of the keystone jack noting
the color pattern for the 568b wiring. Note: Each keystone jack is slightly different in how they
are labeled and how the colors are arranged. With the A standard on top and the B standard on
the bottom. The solid box represents the solid wire with the white stripe Wile the box with the
white diagonal stripe going through the middle, represents the white wire with the colored stripe.

Step3: Keeping the pairs as twisted as possible press the wire into the correct groove with your
thumbs. If you completely straighten the wires to run them through the jack you will risk cross
talk between the pairs.

Step 4: Using a punch down tool punch the wires down into the blades built into the keystone
jack.

2.11 Recommendations for Effective Installation of a Network

A. Appropriate Planning
Arranging the method of Network Installation is very crucial and may be completed by defining
your company specifications, creating a framework for connecting computers and other
equipment in your small business to enable your business to develop. Make sure that you make
use of the right cabling when designing your network. For Gigabit networks use the common
Cat. 5e cabling or higher-top quality Cat 6 cabling and wire for Gigabit connectivity. This also
counts for network switches and routers that only help 100Mbps for future upgrading.
B. Cautious Configuration
On a network, computers need to have to be able to communicate with one yet another.
Incapable to do this it needs to be configured accordingly. That is feasible in your local location
network (LAN) or the web by wide region network (WAN). Connecting the network is often
performed working with devices like Ethernet cards, switches, routers, and modems.
C. Security and Safety
It is a known truth of how lots of threats can come by way of through the network including
viruses, Trojans, worms, and so on. These threads can spread from one laptop to another and
may drastically result in damage like losing crucial information. It is hence highly essential to
ensure security and security in your network by obtaining a network firewall at the same time as
a suggested antivirus installed. This can ensure a virus-free network that allows you to recognize
and get rid of threats just before any harm happens.
D. Get Expert Guidance
To assist put your management and administration of accounts in place, Efficient Installation of a
Network is required. Wireless network installation avoids the expensive method of introducing
cables into a developing, or as a connection in between different gear locations, email setups, and
shared networks. If unsure, usually get professional tips.
