Chapter One
Introduction
1.1 Background of Company
 SNNPR Science and Information Technology Bureau was established in 2008 E.C to foster the Social and the
economic development and building good governance in the region under the Proclamation number 133\2003 of
the state.
 It is necessary to produce a human resource having Adequate professional knowledge and skill in the
information and communication technology

 To interlink the regional government institutions with each other and automate resources by
Putting in place were modern and reliable information.
 To build capacity of using modern technology throughout in the regional and national level
 To change different current manual system into computerized system.
 Develop the necessary legal framework for application of ICT and design and implement
appropriate security for prevention of unlawful practices.

1.4 Organization Structure and work flow
 As a governmental organization SNNPRS ICT Agency ruled by regional council that held along All
organization that exists in the region.
 According to the rule ICT Agency have one main head of the agency that is accountable for the head of the
region. Under the head of agency there are different departments with different profession and tasks.

Chapter two
Over all experience gained from the internship
2.1 My internship working section
 During my stay in the organization, I have chosen networking from the sectors that have offered to me as an
alternative, Because of my eagerness to put the theoretical knowledge into practice that I have seen at different
course.
 And because it is one of the sections of the Organization that provides adequate functional training in the
organization.

2.2 The work flow of networking department

 The networking unit of the organization divides the work into several stages. These operations are arranged in
stages as follows they receive internet service from a service provider and manage using different switches.
 Deploy the managed network to the various offices as needed. These include
 monitoring the network
 repairing those in the event of a malfunction
 setting up a data center and providing and receiving information to the recipient in a Timely manner.

2.3 Challenge I have faced
A. Some of the challenges I have faced while performing my work
tasks are: -
 lack of transportation system in the morning,
 Weak responsibility of the employees to the internship student,
 Lack of networking materials
 Lack of Punctuality: - is the big problem in my field practice period because the staff members are
not getting on time.
B. Measure I have taken to overcome the challenges
To make my internship time suitable and smart I have tried to find a solution for the above Mentioned
challenges. I have taken the following measures: -
 Getting ready early to get transport
 I have tried to continue in easy ways to with some employers in the company.
 Asking the company’s principals to provide the materials on time.

2.4 My task during the internship
Once I were in the company and selected the networking unit
 the task I were given was to take the floor plan of one of the buildings of the company and set up an internet
connection for each office and create local area network with different VLANs
 After finishing collecting all the information about the site, I go to do drawing by using Visio software.

Chapter Three
Detail design and description of projects I have done
3.1 Summery :
 This project is aimed improve and upgrade the existing network infrastructure of the company in order to
provide fast and efficient service for the company workers, customers and government officials by replacing
and adding some equipment.
 The improvement typically, focused on a LAN encompasses computers and peripherals connected to a server
within a small geographical area such as an office building, Home, school that is restricted to smaller physical
areas Network design and installation is concerned on how can interconnect the computers in organization

3.2 Problem statement and justification :

Main issue in the existing network is security problem both physical and logically.

Physically: -
 Some cables are being damaged.
 Uncover places were exist (buildings)
 Resources are not wisely used, e.g., access switch, core switch, servers, Rj45
 No UPS device for access switches
 No power outlets for independent network devices

Logically: -
 No firewall so that the network is opens for any threats.
 Poor path selection, no resource sharing, so needs Security improvement
 Connection fluctuation due to path length limitation
 A network that is too complex or difficult to maintain cannot function effectively and efficiently.
 By considering the problem listed above and using all technical knowledge’s of networking to solve all
 the existing problems

3.3 Objectives of the project
3.3.1 General objective:
 The general objective of internship is to gain full knowledge or practical knowledge on how to design local
area network (LAN) by using our previous theoretical knowledge and to develop communicative knowledge
with organization society.

3.3.2 Specific Objectives:

 Specific objectives of this project are:
 To Design the scalable LAN network for the increasing number of users
 To Improve and consolidate network performance at ICT agency
 To provide increased network capacity, by up grading the existing network devices.
 To improve the network's fault tolerance, security, and high-speed connection.
 To understand and upgrade the existing local area network (LAN)
 To design a LAN network in terms of topology, type of cabling and related coast.
 To design fastest network depending on the increasing number of user and devices.
 To develop more secured network in terms of level of security needed

3.4 Methodology
 For the achievement of my internship, I used different approach as the hardness of the project.
 Accordingly, the following procedure was used to overcome those difficulty works. Some methods are as listed
as follow:-
 Observation of the site
 Free hand sketch of the design
 Measurement
 Counting no of nodes and users
 Drawing the design on Visio software

a) Observation
 This is the first thing to start my project by surveying the overall design of the agency which I aimed to do
project or to upgrade current existing LAN design in to new design which solves the problems listed in the
statement of problem of the project.
 And I physically vested around the agencies site or bureaus and collect some information to do my next task.
 The next step before going to design on Visio software in this step I draw the design of agency on the paper.

b) Measurement
 In this step I measured each and every room length in addition to cable length from server room to each access
switch. Then from access switch to nodes or end users.

c) Counting
 Counting is method which I used to count number of nodes in each room which are functional and non -
functional and number of users how many users is there to solve problem of network availability of the
personals.

3.5 Literature review
3.5.1 Project requirement and documentation
 In this project of improving the existing network infrastructure of SNNPR ICT agency
 the project requirements and detail stakeholders need to develop formal solutions and document
all SNNPR ICT agency goals.
 This research and discussion that help the project process go smoothly and ensure that I have
all the requirements, needs and “wish list” items identified.

Chapter four
4.1 The skills and qualifications gained from the
Internship
The skills gained from the internship are very essential to change the theoretical knowledge to practical skills.
 Experiences that I have shared during forty-five (45) Internship ship period
are listed below:-
 I have learnt about working processes in Organizations, especially Network installation
 I have improved my technical and personal skills that I have learned theoretically becoming familiar with new
techniques and methods.
 I have gained knowledge of organizational structure and how can behave in a company.
 I have learned how to configure network devices before they are being used.

4.2 Upgrading theoretical knowledge

For doing any practical work, theoretical knowledge is the stepping stone for it. As a result : -
 I have upgraded my theoretical knowledge by reading courses that I have learned in the previous class, so many
times over and over. In addition to academic theoretical knowledge.
 I have also upgraded my theoretical knowledge on the important steps needed for installing local area network
(LAN).

4.3 Improving industrial problem-solving capability
 This internship has changed my professional level which will be helpful in my activities inside the company
and outside my working station.
 The knowledge I gained from the course and from internship period will enhancemy personal skill.
 As a result, I feel that my quality of work improved and contributing more in the organization for the
development of the existing network structure.

4.4 Team playing skills

 Under this topic I try to present the importance of executing personal task in a team. This means that each
member of the team must be responsible for the whole team success and failure.
 So, I learned to be more responsible as individual and as a team.
 The skills that I have gained from Team playing in the internship program includes: -
 Sharing of information between team members.
From my internship program I gained the way of sharing information, knowledge, and experience to take the
initiative to keep another team members informed.
 I have learned that one team member must care about what the team members are doing andtheir
contribution to its success.
 I understood that the knowledge of team is stronger than the individual persons’ knowledge and itis more
effective.

4.5 Leadership skills
 The internship is an important occasion to practice the assets of leadership.
 I have increased a lot about leadership and I saw how important it is for a successful project.
 In doing my project, I were able to improve my self-confidence as I have the willingness and inspiration to face
any difficulty in the project.
 The project helped me to grow emotionally and how to learn from failure & achieve once goals to success.

4.6 Understanding about work ethics, industrial

Psychology, and related issues
 Work ethics are defined by what you are willing to do when no one is watching you.
 I have understood that to work in companies respecting the work ethics is the main criteria of workers. Some of
good work ethics are :-
 The path to what I want to take action.

4.7 Interpersonal communication skills
 From my internship program, I have improved my personal communication skills as one of the most
important thing.
 On the top of that I didn’t make good team communication while I were in the campus.
 But, In this internship period, I have improved my ways of communication, and developed new formal
communication skill.

4.8 Practical skill gained

 I have developed a confidence to do the given work practically and observed practical work is more simple
than theoretical.

4.9 Improving team playing skills

 Most of networking installations are totally teamwork. I learned that how teamwork is essential for an
organization to be successful for its work.
 Teamwork has a number of benefits among them are:-
 Distributing the work load, Reinforcing individual capabilities
 Creating participation & involvement, making better decision
 Feeling like I play a part in the work being done, generating a diversity of ideas
 Teamwork allows me to make friends & enjoy a better social experience when studying & working.
 One of the most important qualities to have when collaborating with others is the ability to communicate.

Conclusion and Recommendation
5.1 Conclusion
 After going through the whole period of internship I have observed so many professional activities and learnt as
well.
 To conclude, I think that this internship was very beneficial to me as I learnt a lot, and it made me discover
works in partial of real world.
 Generally, I had got practical knowledge of networking especially in switch configuration, cable crimping,
cable punching on patch panel, how networks distributed.
 This internship was definitely an introduction to the actual work field for me. I have learned to work in a
networking organization and apply my knowledge into practice.
5.2 Recommendation to SNNPR & ITB ICTC
 As I have seen in summer field practice there are a lot of problems and challenges were happening for
performing effective works like, the office didn’t have good documentation system, so any person did not get
good information when needed.
 I also would like to recommend that The office was very narrow to manage the word and to keep material. So,
it is good if they prepare suitable rooms for the work.
 In order the company to perform well and to become competent with other company definitively I would like
recommend the following activities that need transformation possibly.

 Computer- is an electronic machine, that process the input data according to the given instruction & gives

 Epon- it is network tool that is used to receive the network from the fiber optics cable to router of the
organization.
 Core switch- it is also known as distribution switches and used as router.
 Toolkit- a device that it is used to hold collection of cable crimping devices .
