Mini case analysis

Identification of the main issue/problem

In the 1970s, if a collision ruptured its gas tank, the Pinto, a subcompact car built by the

Ford Motor Corporation, became infamous for bursting into flames. The case brought by injured

people and their families exposed how the company rushed the Pinto through assembly and onto
the market.

Analysis of the issue using concepts on Utilitarianism

The cost-benefit analysis is most commonly used, applying utilitarian concepts to

business ethics. It is a successful decision-making tool. Before taking action, businesses will try

to figure out how much anything will cost them, which could hopefully result in consequences

that are beneficial to all. That would mean that the business could make a profit, while their

product could help the customer. Products are hopefully fit for purpose, safe, and offer value for

money. Without assessing all possible factors first, as well as taking into consideration other

concerns or threats that might jeopardize progress, no organization will attempt a project. Using

utilitarianism, ethical business practice will then weigh the positive and negative outcomes for all

that the action will impact, regard all as having fair rights (at least in Mill's poor utilitarian rule),

without bias towards themselves, and would use it as an objective, factual way to make a moral

decision.

Recommendation of effective solutions which can be from the case or proposed by you

They can place the gas tank above the rear axle or under the cabin in the middle of the

car, just to prevent deaths due to minor crashes. To save space they can use a long tank if the

space is tight. But it is much safer if the gas tank is placed inside of the car's frame. It is

surrounded by solid steel and therefore it has a low chance of explosions when the accident
happens.
