For A36 grade,

Fy=36 ksi, Fu=58 ksi, E=29000 ksi

Given, Ae=An, PL 3/8X7"

Three 1" dia bolts

Nominal strength for yeilding,

Pny=Fy*Ag

                                                   =36*(2.625
in2)  = 94.5 kips

where Ag=gross area of plate

An=Net area of plate after deducting bolts area

=Ag -
Ab                                                                                                                                                         where
Ae=(3/8)*
(1+1/8)*1=0.42 in2

                                                                                                             (hole
size will be more than bolt by
1/8")

=2.625-0.42=2.20
in2

Now, we know that Ae=An

Nominal strength under fracture,

Pnf=Fu*Ae=58*2.20=127.6
kips

LRFD

Design strength under yielding, *Pny=0.9*94.5=85.05

kips
( =resistance
factor)

Design strength under fracture, *Pnf=0.75*127.6=95.7

kips

ASD

strength under yielding, =0.6*94.5=56.7

kips
(0.6 and 0.5 are safety factors)

strength under fracture, =0.5*127.6=63.8

kips

Strength of plate will be minmum of two values for each design

philosophy.
