1
Objectives:
1. Ability to read and understand a steel structural framing plan.
2. Ability to use NSCP 2015 for computation of superimposed dead
load and live load.
3. Ability to idealize members for simplified calculation.
Problem:
A 2nd floor framing plan as shown is composed of steel beams and metal deck.
The 100mm thick reinforced concrete slab resting on these beams and girders
have the following superimposed dead loads:
Metal Deck: 0.05 kPa
Floor Finish Type: Stone concrete, 20mm
Ceilings (Below the Slab): Fiberboard, 13mm
Frame Partitions: Wood studs 51x102mm plastered
Miscellaneous (MEPF): 0.24 kPa

Perimeter girders carry a uniform superimposed dead load of 8.0 kN/m due to
the perimeter wall.

The linear weight of girders and beams are assumed as 0.36kN/m and 0.26kN/m,
respectively.

The slab carries a live load of Residential Basic Floor Area.

1. Determine the total superimposed dead load acting on slab S8 (kPa).

2. Determine the total superimposed uniform dead load acting on beam B1
(kN/m).
3. Determine the total uniform dead load acting on G8 (kN/m).
4. Determine the total uniform dead load acting on G11 (kN/m).
5. Determine the uniform live load on B2 (kN/m).

HINTS:
1. Metal deck flooring distributes load in one way action.
2. Dimensions in the framing plan are in millimeters.
3. Frame partition is assumed to be distributed on the full area of slab.
