Steel Design - Tension Members
Problem Set 1

General Directions:
0. Refer to the AISC Steel Construction Manual for the different properties of Steel Sections
1. Write your solution in a clean sheet of paper.
2. Give your complete solution on each problem.
3. Do not round off intermediate values; use the storage function of your sci. cal.
4. Round off your final answer to the nearest hundredths place.
5. Encircle your final answer.
6. Scan your answers and compile it in a pdf file.

Problem 1. A PL 3⁄8 × 7 tension member is connected with three 1-inch-diameter bolts, as shown
below. The steel is A36. Assume that Ae = An. Compute the following:
a. The design strength for LRFD
b. The allowable strength for ASD
Problem 2. A double-angle tension number, 2L 3 × 2 × 1⁄4 LLBB, of A36 steel is subjected to a dead
load of 12 kips and a live load of 36 kips. It is connected to a gusset plate with one line of 3⁄4
inch-diameter bolts through the long legs. Does this member have enough strength? Assume that
Ae = 0.85An.
a. Use LRFD.
b. Use ASD.

Problem 3. An L6 × 4 × 5⁄8 tension member of A36 steel is connected to a gusset plate with 1-
inch-diameter bolts, as shown below. It is subjected to the following service loads: dead load =
50 kips, live load = 100 kips, and wind load = 45 kips. Determine the effective area by solving for
the reduction factor U and determine whether this member is adequate.
a. Use LRFD.
b. Use ASD.
Problem 4. The tension member shown below is a PL 3⁄8 × 8. The bolts are 1⁄2 inch in diameter
and A36 steel is used.
a. Compute the design strength.
b. Compute the allowable strength.

Problem 5. Determine the nominal block shear strength of the tension member shown below.
The bolts are 1 inch in diameter, and A36 steel is used.
