Farmer’s Market- Exploring and Describing Fruits using the Five Senses
This lesson covers English Language Arts and Science.
This lesson support all five domains of child development-
● Social development: Students will work in small groups to use their five senses to
describe fruits.
● Emotional development: Students will learn to work in a group by negotiating with each
other and developing leadership skills.
● Physical development: Students will use their fine motor skills for invented spelling in
their writing.
● Cognitive development: Students will use letter-sound correspondence in their writing.
● Language development: Students will verbally use adjectives to describe various fruits.
They will also write adjectives that describe a fruit using invented spelling.
● This lesson allows students to explore fruits with their five senses. By using their five
senses, they learn to use different adjectives to describe various fruits. They will also use
invented spellings to help them spell a variety of words. According to Engaging the Senses
at the Farmers Market, children experience their world through their senses. A trip to the
farmer’s market provides a multi-sensorial experience that increases their language
development. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore with their senses.

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation):
1. Say and Ask: “Friends! We are going to be using our five senses today! Who can tell me
what are our five senses? Which part of the body do you use to see, smell, hear, touch, and
taste?”
2. Say and Ask: “Yesterday, we took a field trip to the farmer’s market. Using your five
senses, what did you see, smell, hear, touch, and taste at the farmer’s market?”
Instruction/Mini Lesson:
1. Say: “Today, we will learn to use different words to describe the fruits we see at the
farmer’s market. We will do that by using our five senses to help us. Now, are you ready
for this challenge?”
2. Show students an apple. Pass the apple around so they can use their five senses.

3. Ask: “What kind of fruit is it? What are some words we can use to describe the apple?”
Record their response on the whiteboard.
4. Model how to describe an apple using the five senses.
○ The apple is red and yellow.
○ The apple smells fresh.
○ The apple sounds crunchy and loud.
○ The apple feels hard, cold, and smooth.
○ The apple tastes sweet and juicy.
5. Say and Ask: “Well done, my friends! Are you ready for another challenge? This time, you
will work with your partner on a different fruit, lemon. When you are working together, I
want you to use all of your five senses and discuss the following questions.”
○ What does the lemon look like?
○ What does the lemon smell like?
○ What does the lemon sound like?
○ What does the lemon feel like?
○ What does the lemon taste like?
6. Come back as a class. Ask each group to share their answers to the questions. Record
their responses on the whiteboard.
Independent Practice:
1. Introduce and go over the directions for the small group activity. Each group will receive
either an orange or a banana. Every student will receive a worksheet.
○ First, they will identify the fruit.
○ Next, they will explore the fruit using their five senses.
○ Then, they will discuss what words they will use to describe the fruit.
○ Last, they will answer the questions above and record their responses on the
worksheet.
2. Circulate between each group to look for understanding. Take note of the struggling
students.

1. Say: “My scientists, you are doing such a great job using your five senses to describe these
fruits. First, I want my groups that have the orange to share. Then, I want my groups that
have the banana to share.” Record their responses for both groups.
