There is a need for this lesson because students will be learning the importance of safety hats for
Rationale
carpenters, architects, and engineers when they work on the construction site to prevent getting
injuries on their head. Students will be exposed to feel the texture of the glue mixing with the water.
They will be able to describe how the texture feels by mixing 2 or 3 materials.
Timeframe Keep in mind appropriate length of an activity for preschool-aged children is 20 mins at most, no
Learning Activity Plan for PreK-Grade 2
● Students will be able to use their fine motor skills by creating a safety construction
worker hat and learning about the importance of the safety hat.
Connections to standards Which NYS Early Learning, or Common Core Standards are addressed? Are there other standards
used?
● PK.SEL.4. Develops positive relationships with their peers
● PK.SEL.6. Understands and follows routines and rules
● PK.AC.3 Demonstrates understanding of what is observed
● PK.ARTS.16. [VA:Cr1-3.PK] Creates Visual Arts
Language Objectives What language/vocabulary, communication, or literacy skill(s) do I want my students to develop
in this lesson? How is this activity using the specific academic language demand?
Vocabulary (Student Friendly):
- Safety hat: workers use to wear on their head to protect themselves from any injury.
- Dig: make a hole by removing dirt, sand, or the like.
- Lift: to move to a higher position.
- Measure: the action of measuring something. We can measure time, weight, height,
temperature, length, speed, and more.
- Excavators: a piece of heavy construction equipment.
Language Function(s): (purpose): Students will be able to identify the different steps that
workers use to build buildings and the materials they use based on their recall information.
Language Structure: (form): Students will be able to answer the questions being asked by
using full sentences. For example, “What is the first thing the constructors do?” Students answer
“They dig”

Procedures (step by step) Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation) What will you do to get children’s attention, or to
introduce children to this learning activity? Describe the process in getting them interested and
engaged.
To have students’ attention, I will show the students a construction worker hat and ask them
what do I have on my hands? Who wears that kind of hat?. After students respond to the
questions, I will present the book.
Instruction/Mini Lesson (Outline the procedures or sequence activities that will make up this
learning experience; for instance, you might follow a routine wherein you model (I try); and ask for
active involvement (we try) during a whole group session.
I'll introduce the lesson to the students by saying: today, we are going to read a book about a
group of people who wear hard hats on their heads to protect themselves from any injury. Who
can tell me who are the people that wear hard hats on their heads? and the hats usually are
yellow. Also, these people use big machines that help them do their job. Who are these people?
Now, I will present the cover page of the book and see who guessed or who was closest to the
answer that I asked previously. I’ll say, people who wear yellow hats and use big machines are
the constructor. I’ll read the book “Construction Workers Build” by Liza Charlesworth and during
the read aloud I’ll ask different questions to the students.
● What are the workers doing with the hammers?
● What are the workers using to measure how tall is the construction?
● When you walk on the street, have you ever seen some construction workers? Do they
wave you their hands?
● What did the construction workers do? They made a school! Right! What else can they
make?
● Who remembers what was the first thing that construction workers did? Yes! they dig
● What are the next steps they took? Yes! They climbed then they hammer
● What will you like to build if you were a construction worker?
Learning Activity Plan for PreK-Grade 2
I will let the students make their own small group of 4 people to the art center. Then with the
available materials (balloon, newspaper, match or raisin box, glue, and yellow paint) we will
proceed to make the construction hat. I will help the students blow the balloon until it is
approximately the size of their heads. Meanwhile, the students will tear the newspaper into
small pieces and then dip them into the glue and glue them to the balloon. Once the balloon is
completely covered with the newspaper, we will leave the balloon to dry. Once the balloon is
completely dry, students will pop the balloon and trim the edges to form a round basin. Using
the scrap card, students will cut out a brim for and tape it to the hat shape. Then we'll tape the
box to the hat so it's next to the bowl and in the middle of the brim. Finally, we will cover
everything with a third layer of paper and glue and let it dry again and then the students will
proceed to paint with yellow paint.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)
At the end of this activity, students will share their ideas and thoughts about what they like or
dislike doing this art craft.
Observer feedback on the lesson plan, including commendations and recommendations for improving aspects of the learning
activity
