The engineer manager must be concerned with putting the right persons in various positions
within his area of concern. The fifth group tackled about staffing the engineering organization
which outlines its procedures, human resources planning, recruitment and selection, induction and
orientation, training and development, performance appraisal, and employment decision and
separations. The staffing as defined by the presenters is a management functions that determines
human resource needs, recruits, selects, trains, and develops human resources for jobs created by
an organization. An important consideration of staffing in an organization greatly minimizes the
potential errors that staffs could execute in their regular tasks. One should be assigned in a position
that is corresponding to his/her capability to fully maximize his competence. The staffing
procedures are the basic steps to be followed by every hiring manager and business owner if they
wish to adequately go about staffing. It aids to recruit the best possible human resources for various
job roles in the organization. The staffing focuses on recruitment, training, and development of
human resources in organizations. This helps to contribute to improved productivity in the
organization.
Staffing deals with the determination of human resource needs, recruitment, selection,
training, and development. As enumerated by the reporters, staffing process consists of the
following steps: First off is the human resource planning, which is a systematic planning ahead to
achieve optimum use of an organization’s most asset; Next is the recruitment, the sources of
applicants may vary such as newspaper advertising, schools, recruitment firms and many more;
The selection refers to the act of choosing from those that are available the individuals most likely
to succeed on the job; Afterwards is the induction and orientation, where employees and new staffs
are informed of the business environment and policies and introduced to immediate working
environment and co-workers; Next up is the training and development, where employees are
exposed on training programs that would be beneficent for the improvement of the company;
Followed by performance appraisal where standards are set to measure the employees’
performance and to influence in a positive manner for performance and development; the
employment decision may consist of monetary rewards, promotion, transfer and demotion; Finally,
the separation is either voluntary or involuntary.
