Rizal's Early Education in Calamba
• Jose ’ s first teacher was his m o t h e r .
• A t t h e age of 3, Jose learned t h e a l p h a b e t a n d prayers f r o m her .
• Seeing Rizal h a d a tal ent for poetry , she encouraged h i m t o wr i t e
poems.
•At the age of 5, Jose learned to read Spanish bible and make sketches
with pencil.
• Jose also h a d a private tutor , Maestro Celestino and Maestro Lucas Padua

Rizal's Early Education in Biñan
• Jose's first teacher in Binan was Maestro Justiniano A q u i n o Cruz w h o
h e described as tall , thin , long - necked , sharp - nosed , a n d w i t h a b o d y
slightly b e n t forward . In Binan , Jose regularly a t t e n d e d mass , w e n t t o
t h e orchard , w e n t t o class at 10 : 00 a . m . a n d ate lunch , arrived h o m e at
5 : 0 0 p . m . , a n d consistently st u d ied a n d dr e w . He also prayed daily
before g o i n g t o b e d
RIZAL'S INFLUENCES
Jose Rizal grew up surrounded by influences that
have contributed to the development of his
nationalist sensibilities . From his father , Francisco ,
Rizal learned the value of self - respect , love for work ,
and independent thinking . His greatest influence
was his mother , Teodora . It was from her that Jose
got his religiosity, a high sense of self-sacrifice , and
love for the arts. His love for freedom and justice was
inculcated in him by Paciano while his sisters taught
him to be respectful and kind to women .
INFLUENCIAL RELATIVES
Jose’s relatives who influenced him greatly mostly consisted of his mother’s brothers:
Tio Jose, Tio Manuel, and Tio Gregorio.
