Technology is something people do; to get a result they need or want. They study to find a way to do it.
Palaeolithic technology is the oldest known, but probably people used technology long before then.
BEFORE:
AFTER:
GENERATION GAP:
Generation Gap is the lack of communication between generations, esp. young people and
parents caused by differences of tastes, values outlook etc.
Generation Gap happens because not everyone is comfortable using different kinds of
technologies. Older generation think that these modern technologies are too complicated for
them to operate.
Generation Gap does not make the technology villain.
There are several figures that thought to be ceremonial to honor deity. The initial roster
of primitive Gods includes objects they encounter through their day-to-day lives that’s
why they have different Gods.
Primitive Gods includes elephants and mammoths in their hunting ground. Mountain Gods to
explain wind currents and ask for provisions. Water Gods to ask for a good catch, and genetic
Gods such as the sun.
METAL AGE PERIOD Ancient people discovered minerals and began forging metal works. They
discover that these are more durable, malleable and have more luster than the previous
materials.
Technology has been instrumental because in searching for a good life, people were able to come up
with creation that would make life easier, more comfortable and enriching. The humans today are much
better off compared to humans several centuries ago. Advancement in medicine, technology, health,
and education ushered in humanity’s best yet, and show no sign of stopping.
Here are some notable comparison then and now:
MORTALITY RATE. Due to technology, lesser women and children die during birth.
AVERAGE LIFE SPAN. Science is able to prolong lives and the distribution of medicines is also
made easier and faster.
LITERACY RATE. Access to education provided to more individuals generally creates a more
informed public.
GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT. Higher country income is brought upon by high productivity –
often and indicator of presence of technology.

Humanity has indeed come a long way from our primitive way and it is said that we are more
“developed” than we are before. Modern humans are reliant on technology in their search for the good
life. We see ways and means from nature to utilize and achieve growth – a goal that we believe would
bring forth betterment. In retrospect, this view of technology proves to be goaloriented as it assumes
that it is instrumental in achieving a goal in mind, that is a purposeful, deliberate craft humans steer in
order to reach some greater good.
Martin Heidegger
A philosopher who argued that its ESSENCE, or PURPOSE and BEING are different from each
other. In the advent of postmodernism, however, the deterministic view appended to technology
crumbled as people began to question if anything is deterministic at all. According to Heidegger,
technology can either be perceived as a means to achieve man’s end and it constitute human activity or
a way that each period reveals a particular character regarding man’s being. Since human appear not to
really know what they are seeking for, the search continues. It is a looming fear, however, that’s the
path that we are treading will not take us to the right direction, leading us in endless circles instead to
the pursuit of the good life. Too much reliance on technology will lead us to innumerable danger.
Humans lose track of things that matter, reducing their surrounding to their economic value.
The real threat of technology comes from its essence, not its activities or products.
The correct response to the danger of technology is not simply dismissing technology
altogether.
Heidegger (1977) explained that people are delivered over to technology in the worst possible
way when they regard it as something neutral.

Question:
2. Do you agree with Martin Heidegger in his idea that technology should only be seen as one of
the approaches in perceiving truth? What are the possible approaches we should consider?

Try to imagine the world without technology. How do you think your day-to-day life would
like? Do this by illustrating a scenario where a certain technological innovation does not exist.
