INFORMATION SHEET PR-5.1.1

“Technology as a way of Revealing”

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

 Explain the concept of human condition before science technology;
 Identify the change that happened in human condition after science and technology; and
 Name ways on how technology aided in revealing the truth about the human being.

Technology as a way of Revealing

Technology – making, modification, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts,
systems, and methods of organization.

Depending on when the word technology is used, technology is:

The tools and machines that help to solve problems or do new things;
The techniques, skills and methods for solving a problem (such as construction technology or
medical technology);
A culture-forming activity (such as manufacturing technology, or space-travel technology).
Using resources to solve a problem (such as knowledge, skills, processes, techniques, tools and
raw materials).
A term to describe the level of achievement in science, mathematics and engineering of a group
or culture.
In economics, technology is the current state of our knowledge of how to put resources
together to produce wanted products (and our knowledge of what can be produced).

Technology is something people do; to get a result they need or want. They study to find a way to do it.
Palaeolithic technology is the oldest known, but probably people used technology long before then.

GENERATION GAP:

Generation Gap is the lack of communication between generations, esp. young people and
parents caused by differences of tastes, values outlook etc.
Generation Gap happens because not everyone is comfortable using different kinds of
technologies. Older generation think that these modern technologies are too complicated for
them to operate.
Generation Gap does not make the technology villain.

Human Condition Before Common Era

Stone age period HOMO ERECTUS discovered fire by

chipping stones without realizing the laws of friction and heat. They used fire for cooking.
HOMO SAPIENS began to sharpen stones used in hunting. I.e. Wedge. This period to be difficult
in our ancestors. There are no written accounts except for cave drawings and unearthed
artifacts.

 There are several figures that thought to be ceremonial to honor deity. The initial roster
of primitive Gods includes objects they encounter through their day-to-day lives that’s
why they have different Gods.

Primitive Gods includes elephants and mammoths in their hunting ground. Mountain Gods to
explain wind currents and ask for provisions. Water Gods to ask for a good catch, and genetic
Gods such as the sun.
METAL AGE PERIOD Ancient people discovered minerals and began forging metal works. They
discover that these are more durable, malleable and have more luster than the previous
materials.

Human Condition In The Common Era

The earliest case of man made extinction occurred over 12,000 years ago brought by hunting
and territorial dispute. Driven by their primal needs to survive leads to extinction.
9,000 years ago, Agriculture emerged that caused several species to lose competition in territory
and food sources.
Formation of communities began that caused humans to expand in territories and more people
to feed.
Due to battle of resources, war between tribes exist but sooner negotiations and less bloody
method – TRADE – takes place.
Humanity became more complex and the primary goal was not merely to survive, but to live the
good life.

Technology has been instrumental because in searching for a good life, people were able to come up
with creation that would make life easier, more comfortable and enriching. The humans today are much
better off compared to humans several centuries ago. Advancement in medicine, technology, health,
and education ushered in humanity’s best yet, and show no sign of stopping.
Here are some notable comparison then and now:
MORTALITY RATE. Due to technology, lesser women and children die during birth.
AVERAGE LIFE SPAN. Science is able to prolong lives and the distribution of medicines is also
made easier and faster.
LITERACY RATE. Access to education provided to more individuals generally creates a more
informed public.
GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT. Higher country income is brought upon by high productivity –
often and indicator of presence of technology.

Humanity has indeed come a long way from our primitive way and it is said that we are more
“developed” than we are before. Modern humans are reliant on technology in their search for the good
life. We see ways and means from nature to utilize and achieve growth – a goal that we believe would
bring forth betterment. In retrospect, this view of technology proves to be goaloriented as it assumes
that it is instrumental in achieving a goal in mind, that is a purposeful, deliberate craft humans steer in
order to reach some greater good.

Martin Heidegger
A philosopher who argued that its ESSENCE, or PURPOSE and BEING are different from each
other. In the advent of postmodernism, however, the deterministic view appended to technology
crumbled as people began to question if anything is deterministic at all. According to Heidegger,
technology can either be perceived as a means to achieve man’s end and it constitute human activity or
a way that each period reveals a particular character regarding man’s being. Since human appear not to
really know what they are seeking for, the search continues. It is a looming fear, however, that’s the
path that we are treading will not take us to the right direction, leading us in endless circles instead to
the pursuit of the good life. Too much reliance on technology will lead us to innumerable danger.
Humans lose track of things that matter, reducing their surrounding to their economic value.

The Essence of Technology

 From the treatise of Martin Heidegger, The Question Concerning Technology (1977), explains
the two widely embraced definitions of technology: (1)anthropological and (2) instrumental.
1. Anthropological definition: Technology is a human activity.
 To achieve an end and to produce and use a means to an end is, by itself, is a
human activity.
 The production or invention of technological equipment, tools and machines,
and the purpose and functions they serve are what define technology.
2. Instrumental definition: Technology is a means to an end.
 Technology is not an end in itself, it a means to an end.
 Technology is viewed as a tool available to individuals, groups, and communities
that desire to make an impact on society.
 The use of technology varies from individual to individual, groups to groups, and
communities to communities according to their individual and collective
functions, goals, and aspirations.
 While technology is widespread, knowing its functions requires paying
attentions to how human use it as a means to an end.
 Technology is an instrument aimed at getting things done.

Enframing as Modern Technology’s Way of Revealing

 If the essence of technology can be understood as a way of bringing forth the truth in the sense
of poeisis.
 It is through enframing that modern technology reveals.

 Humankind’s desire to control everything, including nature, is captured in this process.

 Enframing, according Heidegger is similar to two ways of looking at the world: calculative
thinking and meditative thinking.
 Calculative thinking, humans desire to put an order to nature to better understand and
control it.
 Calculative thinking tends to be more commonly utilized, primarily because
humans’ desire to control due to their fear of irregularity.
 Meditative thinking, humans allow nature to reveal itself to them without the use of
force or violence.
 Humans become part of the standing reserve and an instrument of technology, to be exploited
in the ordering of nature.
 The role humans take as instruments of technology through enframing is called destining.
 In destining, humans are challenged forth by enframing to reveal what is real.
 This destining of humans to reveal nature carries with it the danger of misconstruction or
misinterpretation.

Backtracking The Human Condition

Technology’s initial promises proved to be true, regardless of its ramifications. Different
machineries aid in prolonging lives – assisting those with disabilities honing efficiency in workplace and
many more. Some places in the world are still battling for their daily survival – diseases, tribe wars, lack
of habitable territories, and competitions on resources. A lot of people still subscribe to religion in
explaining things that they don’t know. For those who have ceased to do so, they have turned their
worships to reverence of science. They are still trying to discover and rediscover things as to how their
existence of the world makes sense, and technology does little to aid them in their pursuit of life’s
meaning Aristotle’s notion about the conception of human Flourishing entertains the Idea of holistic
enrichment Of a person. His notable Distinction was called virtues and their role in achieving the good
life. Technological advancement are seemingly occurring in a rapid pace that our morality cannot quite
keep up; no such consideration was given in this approach in achieving the good life.

The Dangers of Technology

 The dangers of technology lies in how humans let themselves be consumed by it.
 In facing the dangers of technology, the fear of disappearing from the face of the Earth should
concern people more potently than the fear of the Earth disappearing.
 As tenants on Earth, people must not allow themselves to be consumed by technology least
they lose the essence of who they are as human beings.
 Humans are in danger of becoming merely part of the standing reserve or, alternatively, may
find themselves in nature.
 In recognizing the dangers of technology, it requires critical and reflective thinking on its use.
 For example: social media has indeed connected people in the most efficient and
convenient way imaginable, but it also inadvertently gave rise to issues such as invasion
of privacy, online disinhibition, and proliferation of fake news.

 The real threat of technology comes from its essence, not its activities or products.
 The correct response to the danger of technology is not simply dismissing technology
altogether.
 Heidegger (1977) explained that people are delivered over to technology in the worst possible
way when they regard it as something neutral.
