Question 1 -A set of four jobs A, B, C & D have the machining time of 5, 25, 20, and 10 hours and are
due at 20, 35, 40 and 25 hours respectively. The four priority rules to be assessed for deciding the
scheduling are recommended to be EDD, SPT, LPT and CR.

1(a). Compute and analyse the set of critical performance metrics for each scheduling process.

1(b). Identify the best priority rule. Support your answer with justifications.

1(c). Comment on the outcomes from other than the best priority rules.

Answer

1(a) - Let us prepare a tabular form of the data.

According to the given situation, there are 4 set of jobs with below mentioned details:

Job Work Time (Machining Time) in Job Due in

m
Jobs Hours Hours

er as
A 5 20

co
B 25 35

eH w
C 20 40

o.
D rs e 10 25
ou urc
As a first step, we will be calculating the Critical Ratio for all 4 jobs with the given data.

Critical Ration = Job Due/Job Work Time

o

With above definition, we can conclude with below table:

aC s
v i y re

Job Work Time (Machining Time) in Job Due in Critical

Jobs Hours Hours Ratio
A 5 20 4
ed d

B 25 35 1.4
C 20 40 2
ar stu

D 10 25 2.5
sh is

The 4 priority rules that have to be assessed are:-

Th

1. EDD (Earliest Due Date)

2. SPT (Shortest Processing Time)

3. LPT (Longest Processing Time)

4. CR (Critical Ration)

EDD – Establishes Priority on the basis of the due date of the Jobs. Hence the sequence will be A-D-B-
C

SPT – Processes the job with the least processing time among the completing list and schedules it
ahead of the others. Hence the sequence will be A-D-C-B.

https://www.coursehero.com/file/118827818/Final-Draft-Assignment-1-OS4docx/
LPT – The job which takes the longest time to process is scheduled ahead of other competing jobs.
Hence the sequence is B-C-D-A.

CR – Critical ration measures the criticality of the job by computing a simple ratio – due date to
processing time data. The smaller the value of CR, the more critical the job is. Hence the sequence is
B-C-D-A.

Priority Rule Rank ordering of Jobs

EDD A-D-B-C
SPT A-D-C-B
LPT B-C-D-A
CR B-C-D-A

The set of Critical Performance Metrics for each scheduling process are as follows:

1. Average completion Time

m
2. Utilization Metric

er as
co
3. Average number of Jobs in the system

eH w
4. Average job lateness

o.
rs e
Now we calculate the above parameters for each scheduling process. Before we calculate the above
ou urc
parameters, let us define Flow time and Job Lateness.

Flow time: Time taken by a job from start to end stage is called Job flow time. This includes the time
taken for machining and also the idle waiting time for the job.
o

Job Lateness: The extra time which the job incurs beyond its estimated completion time is called job

lateness.

From the above calculations and analysis we can summarize all the scheduling processes in a single

1(b)

Before we identify the best Schedule from the above 4, we need to consider the below rules:
ed d

i. In case of Average Job completion time, lower the value better is the outcome.
ar stu

ii. In case of Average Utilization Metric, higher the percentage better the outcome.

iii. In case of Average number of Jobs in System, lower the value better is the outcome.
sh is

iv. In case of Average Lateness, lower the value better is the outcome.
Th

Now considering the above rules, we can conclude that the schedule SPT has performed the best
among the 4 rules with values as stated below:

Average Job Completion Time: 28.75 Hours

Utilization Metrics: 52.17%

Average number of Jobs in the system: 1.92

Average Lateness: 6.25 Hours

This study source was downloaded by 100000832878904 from CourseHero.com on 11-27-2021 11:59:00 GMT -06:00

https://www.coursehero.com/file/118827818/Final-Draft-Assignment-1-OS4docx/
Hence the Priority Rule SPT (Shortest Processing Time) is the best performing scheduling for the Jobs
A,B,C&D.

1(c)

Looking at the summary table in 1(b), we can also observe the following:

i. The priority rules LPT and CR have the exact set of Critical Performance parameters for the Jobs.

ii. In case of Priority rules SPT and EDD the Average lateness is same at 6.25 Hours which is the least
among all priority rules

iii. If we observe the values of SPT and EDD the values are very close to each other. Hence EDD can
be considered as the closest alternative to SPT Priority rule.
