What is the History of the Vigan Public Market?

In colonial period, Cuidad Fernendina de Vigan was the centre of political

social religious cultural and economic activities in the north.

In 1978, the administration of the late Governor Evaristo “Titong” Singson,

they transferred the Imelda Socio Commercial Public Market into the Sta. Elena Vigan

City. The original Agora type Public Market that find in Quezon Ave. in the past was

completely razed by fire in 1994 displacing numerous Vendors.

The new set of leader elected in 1995 built the new three module, the story

commercial centre, to keep even flourishing local economy ushered by conversation of

Vigan, into a component city, it is also includes the UNESCO list of world heritage

sites and monuments.

This new commercial edifice embodied the Biguenos collective aspiration to

reinforce the status of Vigan as center of tourism, commerce and industry of the

province of Ilocos.

This construction of the late Governor Evaristo “Titong” Singson Commecial

Center possible through the funds of the City Government of Vigan. And the fully

assistance of Former President Gloria M. Arroyo and Former Pres. Fidel. V. Ramos,

Sen Loren Legarda, and other in the senate congress.

Old Public Market was established in 18th century. The name of the old Public

Market was “Imelda Socio-Commercial Complex that was found in Quezon Avenue

but know is all know the “Xento Mall”. The old Public Market was not made from
cement. And it was only a small place there are also a few vendors. And some vendors

that they sell like, vegetables or fruits they get their own plants.

But after years past the Imelda Socio-Commercial Complex was burn. Cause of

the electricity then, after that fire the old Public Market was became squatter area

because of the fire. Many vendors destroy their life by being vendors. But the

Administration of Mayor Agdamag they planed to make an another Market and

recolate on the wide place.

The new Public market was established in 1997 but was done in 1999; the name

of the new Public Market was “Mercado Poblico”. It has a four module that built in the

new Public Market so that it is more recognize the vendors and it is much easy to find

the needs of individuals. The new Public Market was much presentable and much

recognize.

2. The Infrastructure Development

The old Vigan Public Market was made of galvanized and tent that they use it, to

build the structure of Vigan Public Market and it is a small stole that build in the past

Public Market. It is also a small or not complete materials or needs of the Bigueños of

the past they didn’t consume other needs from other province they only prefer the

product here in Vigan.

The new Vigan Public Market was made in a cement and also it has many stoles

were built for vendors and also a two storeys buildimg was build and it is more

stronger than the past Vigan Public Market or the Imelda Socio-Commercial Public

Market. They also consume to the other province and municipalities in whole world.
The building was divided into a 4 modules, the module 1 is the vegetable section, the

module 2 is the wet section, the module 3 is the vegetables and fruit section, and the 4

is the food court or the food station. It much recognize than the old Public Market.

This project of the city they didn’t complete this present Vigan Public Market by

the help of the other people just like the Governor in the past and the present, City

Mayor and also the former president in the Philippines who is Former President Gloria

M. Arroyo.

The old Vigan Public Market was built in 18 th century. The name of the old

The old Public Market was less in materials that they used in building the

structure. The Public Market was made from the galvanized and also made from tent or

what we call the “tulda”. The vendors just sold their products in whatever places inside

the Public Market. The products that they were selling were from their own backyard.

Then after a few years the old was burn by the fire. This old Market became a squatter

area, and it was dirtier and it only bases few vendors selling their own products.
2. The new Vigan Public Market was built in 1997 and was done in 1999. The name

of the Public Market was “Mercado Poblico”. That was found in Sta. Elena, Vigan

City.

The new Public Market, have complete materials that peole can, easily to buy

their needs in their daily lives. The vendors also have their own stoles to make them

good sellers. The new Public Market are made from cement and iron metal, which they

credited from the bank to carry the all materials needed to build a good Public Market

which, after a year they have been finished to expose the beauty of our Public Market.

So, now the new public market are can be not easily destroyed because they are

made from cement and some materials that are made from galvanize.

This research would establish ideas about the Mercado Publico De Vigan: Its

Glorious Past that inspire the researchers to study about its existence. Students and

younger generations will acquire further information behind the existence of the

structure and the importance of it.

 This study will also give further information about the Public Market as the

first research study to be taken.

Objectives

The reason why the researchers conduct about the History of Vigan Public

Market is for them to know the historical transformation because the old and new

public market is not the same location. In this study the researchers could see the

story why they moved the public market.

Furthermore, the researchers and the readers will gain knowledge on the

Historical background and upon knowing its history will come to realize how

important the Public Market is.
