Product Innovation and Design (BA4859)

Term Project

There is no doubt we are living and leading through unprecedented times – a time when many
industries are forging unchartered territories; where in just a few short months, numerous
industries have been brought down to their knees with the global pandemic of COVID-19.
However, as this pandemic is far from over, it will bring forward major opportunities for new
businesses with new products, that will leverage either an opportunistic or a longer-term
opportunity.

As for your final term project, you as a team are required to design and develop a personal product
to be worn on a person’s body to ensure social distancing of (1.5 meters) in Urban areas. This
product is to be used/carried on the body and must communicate 1.5m distance to its owner and
those in the surrounding environment. You are required to use information and skills that have
been acquired during this semester. Unless your product is an original concept, it will be
competing with other similar products in your business category. It is, therefore, necessary to
determine why and how your product is unique and take advantage of this fact. Differentiation is
not just key but invaluable.

You as a team are expected to document, report and illustrate your whole design thinking process.
Starting from where the idea came from and its development from start to finish. Once the concept
generation has been finalized, you will move on to the NPD (New Product Development) process
and illustrate that accordingly. Your report should be well organized to ensure that all relevant
information is considered and included. Always remember that a good design thinking and
development plan requires a great deal of information from many different sources. An important
consideration in pulling all of this information together is to maintain a big picture view while
simultaneously keeping an eye on the details.
Requirements.
 You are to submit a detailed report of the project & develop a presentation to pitch your idea.
 Please note that the report & the final presentation are to be given on the 14 th week of the semester.
 The final presentation and the project report carries 20 marks in total.
 It is mandatory for all team members to be present in the presentation and in business attire, unable to
do so will result in deduction of marks.
Good Luck!
