SUSPENSION

● Suspension is a system of tires, tire

air, springs, shock absorbers and
linkages that connects sprung mass

What Is
to its unsprung mass.
○ Unsprung mass - Springs, tires,
Suspension???? wheels, brakes etc.
○ Sprung mass - chassis and all
other parts supported by springs.
Job of suspension ● To maximize the friction between the
tires and road surface.
● To provide steering stability with good
handling.
● To ensure the comfort of the
passengers and provide smooth ride.

Working of Works on the principle of force dissipation
-involves converting force into heat.
suspension. Spring will hold the energy.

While Damper will convert it into heat .

Energy storing ➢ Stores energy - generated when - car goes
through a bump.
suspension ➢ Amount of energy - spring holds - depends

component-Spring
on:-
● Length
● Material
● Coefficient
➢ Spring is good for providing a cushion.
➢ But your car will keep on bouncing as there
is no energy loss/transfer into another
energy (heat energy).
➢ Here the role of damper comes.
Dampers ➢ Damper consists - piston inside it - with
holes and pressurised oil.
➢ Spring transfers energy - to damper - piston
moves - passing through pressurised oil -
generates heat - converts - energy of bumps
- in the road - to heat.

➢ One thing about the new dampers is that

they react to high speeds.

➢ Strut - A combination of both , strut is

basically a damper wrapped in a coil spring
Different ●

Mainly classified in two :-
Dependent - both wheels are connected with
Suspension single rigid rod.

Geometries Motion of one wheel depends on another.

● Independent - wheels are connected

independently to chassis.
Your pole
Q1. What do you think shall happen without Dampers …….?

Q2. When a car hits a bump or pass over a high-speed breaker the person
sitting at the back gets a sudden jerk but the driver is more stable. Why do
you think it’s happening…?
(Hint : something related to spring constant…)
