Bedroom curtain trends for 2021

Even in the context of today’s minimalism and an
emphasis on the reasonable use of textile elements,
designers honestly admit: you cannot do without
curtains in the bedroom. The trends for 2021 are
very democratic concerning this room, and if you
like traditional draperies and not laconic blinds, do

Living room curtain trends for 2021

When designing a living room following the trends
of 2021, do not forget about such an important detail
as window textiles. Contemporary draperies strike a
balance between functionality and aesthetics, as
they not only regulate natural light, but also add
texture and color to the interior. The following types
of curtains allow you to ensure a flawless design:

H&S TRENDS

Kitchen curtain trends for 2021

The main requirement that designers and owners of impeccable taste make for curtains for the kitchen is a
moderate length, unless, of course, you are decorating the dining area. If you want to choose curtains in
fabrics, take a closer look at translucent and transparent canvases with a length just below the windowsill, or
choose a thick fabric. In the latter case, its color must be in harmony with the kitchen cabinet’s tone or the
wall decoration. There isn’t much fabric in the kitchen, and it is essential to fit it as organically as possible.

However, interior experts still consider blinds, shutters, and roller blinds the best options for kitchen
windows – due to their ergonomics and compactness, they are entirely safe, and their care is much easier.

Small Kitchen
Design Ideas

By Staff Writer
.
Oftentimes, having a small kitchen is a necessity because that’s what the available space dictates.
Other times, a small kitchen is a luxury — a unique yet functional addition to any home. Whichever is
the case, setting up a small kitchen can prove challenging considering all the things you need to
include in your kitchen, like a stove, a countertop, ovens, and more. That said, designing a small
kitchen is very much doable. And the design ideas below will get you well on your way to making the
kitchen of your dreams come true, no matter how small it may be.

Go for a simple but efficient layout

The smaller the space, the more limited your options will be in terms of layout. So, you'll have to get
very creative to maximize every available space. For starters, you can take inspiration from galley-
style kitchens, where services such as the dishwasher and stove are clustered together and storage is
in upper and lower cabinets. You can also tighten up your work triangle such that key work stations
are accessible by simply turning around or taking a couple of steps.

TRENDS
Invest in multi-purpose kitchen appliances
A small kitchen won't be able to accommodate too many appliances. So, get yourself some kitchen appliances
that can perform a variety of functions. A step in the right direction would be getting rice cookers that go
beyond cooking rice, and can work as steamers as well. These are highly functional but easy to use and can be
the only kitchen appliance you'd need if you're living alone or with your partner only. They are even visually
pleasing, adding a touch of style to any kitchen. Another good investment would be an air fryer oven that
combines air frying with a host of other functions, including baking, broiling, roasting, toasting, and reheating
food. By investing in these versatile appliances, you not only save up on space but also get that proverbial bang
for your buck

“Hide” what you can

The idea to conceal appliances as furniture has long been around, and is popular among interior designers. This
idea is commonly referred to as the 'hide it if you can' principle, and it promotes functionality, but without
necessarily sacrificing style. A perfect example in this case is the Induction Cooktop, which incorporates a
cooking range into a countertop, thereby giving you ample space to work in without the setup taking too much
space in your kitchen. 'Hiding' stuff clears your kitchen of clutter, too, making it appear bigger.

OUTDOOR
LIVING REFRESHED
Creating an outdoor living space needn’t be a daunting nor expensive project. By using

simple materials & aesthetics, one can create an extension of your home in an outdoor

living or entertainment area.

For this featured project, we made use of an existing pergola structure to create an outdoor room. The
purpose for this area was to create an entertainment space with a dining area and pizza oven.
Pavers were used to designate the floor space and soften the colour tones underfoot. The back wall of this
space was cladded with teak in vertical planks to create height as well as texture to an otherwise flat
backdrop. The teak was then sanded and sprayed with an ammonia solution to strip the redness out of the
wood and over time with exposure to sun & elements, this teak cladding will age and soften to tones of
grey.

The pizza oven was built into a large service & prep counter. The building of this was kept simple by
skimming and painting the support walls and using granite tiles for the countertop. Display shelves above
the countertop were placed to add interest with pots and plants creating pops of
colour & texture. HOMES & STYLES MAGAZINE| 31

H&S OUTDOORS

A large steel framed mirror was mounted to the sidewall to reflect the beautiful gardens of this home
and creates a window-like feature that adds to the dimensions of this space. This area was designed to
be used as an entertainment & outdoor dining space so a large custom-made steel & glass dining table
sits central to the space. A simple hanging ladder was placed centrally over the table and draped with
outdoor bulb lighting to illuminate the space as well as for dramatic effect at night.

As shown with this project, outdoor living space should have form & function and should be an
extension of your home. Simple aesthetics can have a great effect in creating depth and interest in a
space.

Here are a few tips and tricks to use when creating an outdoor living space.
• Keep it simple; decide on the purpose of the space and start from there.
• Use existing areas or create a designated zone by using a simple pergola structure.
• Change the flooring- tiles, pavers, gravel, timber decking are all great options for an outdoor
living space.
• Add interest on walls by use of simple décor- shelving, mirrors, hanging baskets, cladding &
painted walls are simple yet effective ways of adding some colour and texture to a space.
• Lighting is a great way to create mood and ambiance outside as well as to illuminate an area.
• Seating can be formal or informal. A dining table is one option but lounge chairs and couches
made from steel or timber can also be a great way to create a less formal sitting area and can
be made soft and cosy with cushions and throws.
• Add pots and plants in and around the space. An outdoor living space should be exactly that;
a living space in nature. With an abundance of flora options, there are so many ways to bring
nature both into our homes as well as enjoy being outdoors in nature.

E T
M E

NYASHA

CHOGA
AN ABSTRACT
EXPRESSIONIST
ARTIST

Tell us a bit about yourself; schooling/education, passion for art, etc

From the time I was about 8 years old, I knew I wanted to be an artist. I studied at O and A
Level and through my first year at the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg, now the
University of KwaZulu Natal). Life’s curveballs required that pack away my materials and
direct my passion towards commercial subjects. After a 20 year hiatus, I got back in the
studio and have not looked back since then.

What's the inspiration behind your art ?

The inspiration behind my work is FREEDOM. Freedom to create what you want, how you
want while being who you want to be. Freedom is a concept to which fluid acrylics lend
themselves so well. With this artform, the process is often more important than the final
piece. Creating a piece is about preparation of the medium and sometimes the substrate,
starting the piece and watching it unfold to take up its own form depending on where I lead
it and where it eventually settles. I usually have a general idea of how I want a piece to turn
out as I start working on it and I love being surprised by the outcome. It’s as though the
paints are collaborating with me.

Where your art pieces can be found – locally and abroad

I sell my pieces directly but don’t have a showroom yet. My pieces may be found online via
my social media sites: Instagram (@nyashac_art), Facebook (Nyasha Choga Art), and on my

HOMES & STYLES MAGAZINE| 34

website www.nyashachogart.com. I participate in local art festivals and fairs. Several of my

latest pieces are on sale at Zimstone Gallery in Washington, DC.

Art is very broad, what do you specialise in?

I call myself a fluid acrylic artist and I produce abstract pieces of art. This art form is also
referred to as acrylic pouring because you literally pour paint onto your canvas. I love
working in sets, so many of my pieces are created as diptychs or triptychs. I’ll gladly take on
the challenge of working in other combinations as per client request.

Who has been your role model in the journey and why?
Many artists have inspired and mentored me, some directly and others indirectly
- Jenny Jordaan, for challenging me to step out of my comfort zone (pastels & charcoal) and
to work with materials I once avoided (acrylic paint).
- Vulindlela Nyoni, for showing me that one can make art a lifelong career
- Vanessa Turner and other part-time artists who are career girls, moms, and artists seeking
to express their creativity

Any international exhibitions you have attended? And among the ones, which 2 are your
memorable ones and why?
I’m yet to exhibit internationally and am looking forward to the opportunity to do so.

HOMES & STYLES MAGAZINE| 35

H&S ARTSCAPE

What can you share as your major achievement in the journey, where are you now?
A number of major achievements come to mind. The first is participating in my first ArtFest
Harare in 2019… it was both humbling and inspiring to be amongst such a huge pool of
Zimbabwean talent. Another was being asked to work on a series of paintings that would
grace the walls of a hospital that later became a COVID-19 treatment centre in Ruwa. Being
contacted, out of the blue, to work on a 15-piece commission for a gallery in Washington, DC
last year is my biggest achievement to date.

Any notable challenges you encountered whilst pursuing your profession as an artist and
how you overcame them..
I studied art through high school up to 1st-year varsity but had to drop it, at the behest of my
parents, to pursue more serious academic qualifications from 2nd year onwards. 20 odd years
ago, Art was not up there as a career choice that would put food on the table. I have
forgotten the incident, but apparently, I agreed to drop art as a subject but promised my
Mom I’d pick it up in 20 years. Today, my folks and I are all glad that I have picked it up again,
incidentally after 20 years, but I do wish I had retained it as a hobby or pastime to keep my
skills fresh.

I am a Marketing Executive in a large bank in addition to being a part-time artist. It’s a very
demanding job that I love and as such I’m not able to dedicate as much time to my craft as I
would have loved to. That makes the time a treasured resource! Maintaining a regular
painting practice and waking up super-early to paint have allowed me to hold my two
passions in balance quite beautifully.

HOMES & STYLES MAGAZINE| 36

H&S ARTSCAPE

What words do you have for a young artist who aspires to be a professional in your
industry?
Don’t wait 20 years to follow your dreams. Life choices used to be “either this” “or that”
decisions but we live in a world where, with planning and commitment, we can be “both this”
“and that” and still put food on the table to boot!

Any other comments, advisory you would like to share?

To young artists, there’s nothing romantic about being a starving artist, it’s important to get
some business skills to ensure that as an artist you have a pipeline of projects to keep you
going. There are numerous platforms through which one can acquire both artistic and
entrepreneurial instruction at the fraction of the cost of a degree, some are even free! If
faced with a dilemma, do not sacrifice a tertiary education for your art.

To parents, do some research before turning your children from what they’re passionate
about. We live in a world where there are so many options for them to choose from and
succeed in. Work with them to explore income streams within their field, you may be
surprised by what you find

keeping in mind the taste of the client. Vertical

environmentally friendly and also reduced the

wooden finished tiles were used to give a

The Foyer of the bungalow was designed in an

unconventional effect that would act as a
center of attraction for the members of the
household as well as the visitors. The Foyer
opens into the double-height space that acts as
the heart of the house. It takes the concept of
traditional courtyards and transforms it into its
contemporary equivalent. This space is used for
day-to-day interactions between the members
of the household and is enhanced by the quality
of light and shade that enters it. A staircase

How To Maintain Good Water

Crystallized salts tend to cloudy up the water while

ammonia and organiccompounds will build up
chloramines. So if enough people pee in the pool, you
can end up with a cloudy pool that is low in pH, high in
uric acid, chloramines and higher TDS levels.

Obviously none of this is good for our pools.

Now that we know why we pee in the pool, and why the
practice is bad, what can we do to start changing the
habits of the patrons of our pools?

We have to recognize that while we may have dozens of

programs going on in our pools, we actually have only
two kinds of patrons: the pros and everyone else. The
pros are the swim team members and lap swimmers. The
wish to get their work out completed in the shortest
time frame possible. Getting out of the pool to use the
restroom prolongs the workout and interrupts the
“zone” that allows swimmers to autonomously swim for
thousands of yards at a time.

Changing the habit of the swim team starts with

changing the mindset of the coach. Swim coaches want
to keep the work out going and get it completed.
Interrupting a workout to let everyone take a break
would interfere with most coach’s plans.

Changing the habits of lap swimmers is equally tricky

because, like most people, lap swimmers may not take
too kindly to the suggestion that they need to be
reminded to go to the bathroom.

Most, if not all, aquatics facilities already have a rule on

hand that is normally enforced: no one in the pool unless
lifeguards are on duty. What if the facility made it a rule
that no life guards would be on duty from the top of
every hour to 10minutes after?

Closing the pool for 10minutes every hour work like a

dream at day-care centers and many small fitness clubs.
But a huge natatorium? A radical idea indeed.

HOMES & STYLES MAGAZINE| 62

H&S OUTDOOR

Understandably, this would not go down very well

with the pros that normally swim for 2-2.5 hours
straight.

For coaches teaching those aged 10 and under

stopping a workout and ordering everyone out of
the pool to go potty is pretty straightforward and
fairly easy.

It starts getting tricky when the swimmers enter

the “tween” years. Tween and teens start saying,
“Wait a minute, I am not a young child and
shouldn’t be ordered to the bathroom like one. ”I
know when I need to go potty and I don’t need
anyone to tell me that”. The idea
is not to “order” anyone to the restroom but to
close the pool for 10minutes every hour so there
isn’t much else to do but go to the restroom.

Obviously, if we want swimmers to use the

restroom as opposed to the pool, coaches will need
to work with facility managers to maximize their
workout time in the most efficient manner possible.
A team that normally has a two-hour workout
might need to look at expanding to 2,5
hours to accommodate restroom breaks. This would
be tough, not just for the coach but for the
swimmers, and families of the swimmers would
have to adjust their schedules to fit the swimmers.
The facility would then need to look to move
around the other programs that also utilize the
pool.

To make this happen, strong leadership and

cooperation between aquatics directors, coaches,
and instructors of the various programs is needed.
As for everyone else that uses the pool, this
shouldn’t be an issue as most programs last 50
minutes or less anyway.

EXPLORING
BINGA CATCH SOME WAVES ON THE BEACH

Binga is a rural district in Zimbabwe‘s Matabeleland North province. Binga is home to the Tonga people and it
was established when residents of this community (which is to the south of Kariba) were relocated to make way
for the construction of the Kariba Dam. It is popular as a fishing destination and as a tourist destination because
of its cultural uniqueness. Binga lies close to the Zambezi Escarpment, a very hot area with temperatures as
high as 30 degrees Celsius.

Binga is accessible via road, and there is an airstrip as well for small aircraft. There is a shorter more direct road
that is currently under construction, the Karoi-Binga Road Accommodation is mostly small privately-owned
places and many of them offer self-catering facilities. There are some campsites in the area such as rest camps,
lodges as well as houseboats for hire. The Chete Safari area and Chizarira National Park are outside Binga but
are interesting places to visit.
The places of interest in Binga

BaTonga Community Museum; it was opened to inform the world about the ways of the Tonga People.
The exhibits at the Museum look at the history of the Tonga. How they lived before they were resettled, this
is shown through a number of historical artifacts. The other pieces are a reminder of the big role played by
the Zambezi River in their day-to-day lives. It depicts how the people adapted to their environment, for
example, their unique architecture. There are several artifacts showing the culture of the Tonga, for
example, the unique musical instruments used in Tonga Bira’s (Rainmaking ceremonies). Some of the
instruments were crafted to emit a sound similar to the sound of the waves. So the exhibits show the power
of the water. The museum also has several pieces showing how the Nyaminyami is a big part of their history
and belief system; something depicted in many other art forms in their community, through pottery, jewelry,
etc.
