1 DESCRIPTION OF THE
LUBRICATOR ARRANGE-
MENT

1.1 PURPOSE

The lubricators are designed to pump the

specified quantity of cylinder lube-oil to the
cylinder liners.

The main purpose of the lubricator is to reduce

wear and corrosion. Furthermore the lube-oil
helps to seal the piston to prevent the loss of
compression and combustion pressure.

For specification of lubrication requirements for

the engine in question please consult the engine
maker.

1.2 DESIGN AND ACCESSORIES

The MAN B&W engine is equipped with a

number of lubricators, each supplying lube-oil to

HJ Lubricator - Manual
one or more cylinders. See marking on the
lubricator for confirmation of the use on your
specific engine. (Marking example in top
drawing on this page.)

Drawings of the lubricators and the necessary

diagrams can be seen in the appendices.

The lubricators are installed according to engine

maker's specifications and are connected with a
rotary drive to the engine. This drive secures
synchronization with crank shaft movement
thereby allowing timed injection of the cylinder
lube-oil.

A setting gauge (X) for easy adjustment of the

timing can be supplied for engines where
applicable. For use see engine maker's manual.

In addition to the timing the quantity of lube- oil

injected may be automatically regulated by
applying LCD and/or MEP regulation. (See next
page.)

The function of the lubricators can be monitored

by non-flow and/or low level alarm devices
mounted on the lubricators. See appendix A of
this manual - if applied.

1.5 MANUAL TEXT AND DRAWINGS

When reading the manual please note that the

numbers in the text referring to sketches in
the manual text pages do not correspond to
the actual part numbers. For correct ordering
of spare parts etc.
Please refer to section “Parts list and
drawings”

1.4 INSTALLATION

When connecting the oil inlet tubes of the

lubricators to the cylinder oil supply tank be
careful not to get dirt into the tubes. We also
strongly recommend that a strainer (Y) should be
inserted in order to avoid loose particles from
the oil supply tubes or larger impurities from oil
entering the lubricator.

Please note that inlet pressure must not

exceed 2.5 bar.

Regarding the setting and initial start of the

lubricators see section 3.

- At the first mounting of outlet tubes it is

HJ Lubricator - Manual
absolutely necessary that the cutting sleeves
(24) are pre-mounted on the outlet tubes,
using specially designed tools for this
purpose, ordering no. 140084 for ø8 o.d. tubes
and part no. 140085 for ø6 o.d. tubes.

- If such precaution is not taken there is a

serious risk that the valve block (8) may be
damaged and that the joints will not be tight, Pre-mounting tools order no. 140084 for ø8
order no. 140085 for ø6
resulting in oil waste and non-lubrication.

The union nuts (23) for the outlet pipes can be

tightened and loosened by means of standard
tools. The operation can, however, be Key order no.207708 for ø8
considerably facilitated by using our specially
designed key, part no. 207708 for ø8 o.d. tubes
and part no. 140126 for ø6 o.d. tubes.

The wires for the electric heating elements and

the alarm devices are best assembled in a Key order no. 140126 for ø6
junction box. Connect them to the ship's
electrical systems. See wiring diagrams among
the enclosed drawings.

2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
OF LUBRICATORS

The lubricators are connected to the cylinder oil

supply tank. From the tank lube-oil flows into
the lubricator container, which is completely
filled with oil with a pressure of up to 2.5 bar.

Oil is sucked from inside the container (1)

through a double suction valve (49) into the
chamber in front of the pump piston (51). When
the cam activates the pump piston, the oil is
pressed through the double pressure valve (48)
and into the ball control bore of the survey block
(36).

Passing through the survey block (36) the oil-

flow presses the indicator ball upwards, see also
subsection 3.6. This ball will register the flow by
its position in the conical bore. The oil leaves
the lubricator through the non-return valve (28).

The oil quantity pumped is proportional to the

lubricator cam shaft (71) revolving speed and
the stroke (one pump stroke per revolution); it is

HJ Lubricator - Manual
also a function of the pump piston diameter.

For determining correct stroke consult the

engine maker's specification of guiding feed rate
for the engine in question.

When setting the stroke please refer to

subsection 3.4 and if LCD and/or MEP
regulation is applied also to appendices D and E.

3 DETAILED DESCRIPTION
OF LUBRICATORS

3.1 HOW TO BLEED, START AND

USE THE LUBRICATOR

Bleeding of container: Make sure that the oil

supply has been established and that it is open.
Loosen the bleed screw (5) in the lubricator
cover and the bleed screw (34) above the level
bore until oil is flowing and tighten them again.

Note: Do not loosen the screws of the cover of

the container without first interrupting the oil
supply.

Bleeding of pumps: Unscrew the bleed screws

(44) and pump the adjusting bolts (11) manually
until the air has been removed (i.e. oil without
air is flowing through the bleed screw holes
when pumping the adjusting bolts). Then keep
the adjusting bolt in its inner position while re-
inserting and tightening the bleed screw.

If the lubricator is in a position where manual

HJ Lubricator - Manual
pumping is difficult because the cam shaft
presses on the pistons, you can turn the engine
with the engine turning gear in order to release
the pistons.

Priming is recommended by some engine

manufacturers and can be done by pumping the
adjusting bolts (11) until sufficient oil has been
supplied.

Prime the system carefully before the first start

of the engine and after disassembly of an engine
cylinder - if specified by the engine
builder/designer.

Following a long standstill it may happen that

the pumps will not draw oil due to air
accumulation in the pumps. In that case refer to
the fourth paragraph on this page: "Bleeding of
pumps".

3.2 WARNING

- Do not open the lubricator during

operation.

- Generally it should be avoided touching the

movable parts of the lubricators during
operation, as this may cause personal injuries
or damage to parts.

3.3 LUBE-OIL OUTPUT, CONTROL

The flow bores have been made as conical bores,

but with a cylindrical bore at the bottom so the
balls will position themselves at the step to the
conical part of the bore or with more flow at a
higher level.

The function of the lubricator can be observed

by looking at the balls in the flow bores.
Dependent on the quantity and the viscosity of
the oil flow the balls will be positioned at a
certain and even level in the bores - moving

HJ Lubricator - Manual
slightly with the pump strokes. An even level
presupposes the same setting of stroke.

A measuring of cylinder oil consumption can

be made as follows:

Disconnect the oil supply to the lubricator and

loosen the bleed screw in the cover of the
lubricator (5). Wait until the oil level has
dropped to the first of the red lines behind the
level bore for oil quantity in the lubricator.

Then measure the time of the consumption of oil

between two or more of the red lines and
determine the consumption by referring to
enclosed drawing: "Litre content in HJ type 75
lubricator". Finally re-fill the lubricator and re-
tighten the bleed screw.

(Only lubricators with a level alarm device have

the level float shown in the drawing).

3.4 ADJUSTMENT OF OUTPUT

Oil supply is proportional to the stroke setting in

the lubricator and the revolutions of the cam
shaft. (See drwg. 80.... "Adjustment of cylinder
oil consumption" ).

The adjustment of the oil quantity for the

individual lube-points (cc/pump stroke) is carried
out through the adjustment of the strokes of the
pump pistons by means of the adjusting bolts
(11).
Handle for joint quantity adjustment
The pump stroke may be adjusted indivi-
dually from 0 to 7mm at intervals of 0.125mm,
which corresponds to 1/4 turn of the adjusting
bolts (11).

1. When adjusting see to it that the handle for

joint quantity adjustment is set to pos. minus (-),
OR that LCD actuators - if applied - are in
position zero (See appendix D if relevant).

and

HJ Lubricator - Manual
2. The fuel pump index must be set to a value
that corresponds to 100% MEP or higher - IF
MEP regulation is applied. (See appendix E if
relevant).

Loosen the key screws (22) above the adjusting

bolts (11) when adjusting the stroke of the pump
pistons. Then turn the adjusting bolts clockwise
for a decrease of stroke or counter-clockwise for
an increase of stroke. Tighten the key screws (22)
again afterwards. (Determination of the pump
piston stroke, see below).

Actual pump piston diameter can be seen on the

front page of this manual, piston sizes are as
standard between 2.5 and 7.0mm in diameter.
Size selection in steps of 0.5mm.

For calculating initial stroke setting and for later

stroke settings based on engine maker/designer
recommendation about guiding feed rate, or for
adjustments of the stroke, we suggest the use of
the following formula:
(See next page).

s =
pump stroke in lubricator in mm.
d =
piston diameter in mm in lubricator
n =
lubricator revolutions per minute.
K =
total number of active oil outlets on
all lubricators.
BHP = engine BHP when lubricators run n
revolutions.
g/BHPh = specific consumption
0 = volumetric efficiency of lubricator

The formula includes specific gravity of the lube-

oil 945g/litre. 0 is of course depending on
several factors including oil viscosity (see also
subsection 3.7), lubricator r.p.m., and counter
pressure at outlet. During normal DE operating
conditions the efficiency is 0.9 or above using an
oil with viscosity 220cSt (SAE 50 at 40°C) and
lubricator revolutions not exceeding 130 r.p.m.

In the function range the efficiency is typically

0.95 or more under conditions as described above

HJ Lubricator - Manual
in lubricators which are clean, well bleed, an
equipped with heating elements to ensure against
temperatures below 40°C.

We suggest the following formula for calculating

actual lube-oil output per lube-point based on
actual measured stroke : (the formula may of
course also be used for calculating required
stroke).

q = output (cc/pump stroke)

d = piston diameter in mm in lubricator
(see front page of manual)
s = pump stroke in mm
0 = volumetric efficiency of lubricator

Determination and adjustment of the pump

piston stroke :
1. During operation:
The movement of the piston may be measured
with a slide gauge while exerting a slight .

2004.09.02/RC/MO/JJ (900006) www.hjlubri.dk HJ LUBRICATOR - Page 9

pressure on the adjusting bolt head (11) so that

the adjusting bolt constantly touches the arm (73)
without exceeding the pressure from the piston
spring (52). - This movement of the adjusting
bolt is the same as the pump piston stroke.

If the stroke differs from the required value then

the stroke may be adjusted in the following way:

Loosen the key screw (22) above the adjusting

bolt (11). Turn the adjusting bolt clockwise for
reduced stroke or counter-clockwise for
increased stroke the number of revolutions
necessary to give the required stroke. Two
revolutions of the adjusting bolt give a stroke
change of 1mm.

Tighten the key screw afterwards. Make sure that

the key screw catches the keyway in the adjusting
bolt.

2. During standstill:
Turn the engine so that the cams of the lubricator
press the pistons all the way in for the lube-points
where you want to change the stroke setting.

HJ Lubricator - Manual
In the case of one lubricator covering more than
one cylinder not all lube-points may be adjusted
with the engine in the same position because the
cams will not all be aligned. In that situation it is
necessary to turn the engine for the various lube-
points - using the procedure mentioned.

The stroke can be adjusted either: 1. by

measuring the actual stroke and changing it to the
required value or 2. by finding zero stroke and
from there setting the required value.

1. Push the adjusting bolt (11) all the way in until

it meets piston spring resistance and pull it all the
way out with your fingers. Use a slide gauge to
measure the distance between the two positions.
This distance is the same as the stroke.

2. Loosen the key screw (22) above the adjusting

bolt (11). Find zero stroke by turning the
adjusting bolt carefully until you have just

reached the point where the adjusting bolt meets

piston spring resistance.

To adjust turn the adjusting bolt counter-

clockwise for increased stroke the number of
revolutions necessary to give the required stroke.
Two revolutions of the adjusting bolt give a
stroke change of 1mm.

Tighten the key screw afterwards. Make sure that

the key screw catches the keyway in the adjusting
bolt.

Please note that during running-in of the

lubricators the adjusted stroke may increase
slightly.

3.5 HANDLE FOR JOINT

QUANTITY ADJUSTMENT
FOR PERIODIC INCREASE OF
LUBE-OIL CONSUMPTION

This section is only relevant if the lubricator is

not equipped with LCD-regulation. If it is

HJ Lubricator - Manual
equipped with LCD-regulation, refer to appendix
D.

The handle for joint quantity adjustment

regulates the stroke of all pumps in the lubricator
at the same time. The handle is used when
periodically there is a demand for increased
dosage e.g. during manoevering or during
running-in of piston rings and liners. Handle for joint quantity adjustment

It consists of an eccentrically suspended shaft

with a handle which moves all the rocker arms
towards the back of the lubricator at the same
time. In this way the distance between the
adjusting bolts and the rocker arms is increased
resulting in a stroke regulation for all pumps.

During normal operation the handle must be in

lock hole minus (-). The pump stroke adjustment
from one hole to the next is approx 1.5mm. If the
handle is moved to lock hole plus (+) the stroke
increase will be approx. 6mm.

3.6 SURVEY BLOCK

The survey block (36) is made of PMMA with a

row of conical bores, one for each pump, each
containing a stainless steel ball.

The ball (37) will, dependent on the quantity and

the viscosity of the oil flow, be positioned at a
certain level in the conical bore, moving slightly
with the pump strokes.

A look at the survey block gives easy

confirmation of the operation of the lubricator.
(See section 2).

When mounting after disassembly remember

to place the survey block with the largest
diameter bore turned upwards. If not, the
survey block will crack when the lubricator is
started, and no oil will be supplied to the lube-
points, which may result in severe damage.

3.7 ELECTRIC HEATING UNIT

HJ Lubricator - Manual
The lubricator is designed for possible mounting
of an electric heating unit (Z) which is capable of
keeping the oil temperature at approx. 40-50°C,
or approx. 20°C above surrounding temperature.

Heating facilitates, among other things, the

expulsion of dissolved air from the oil and in this
way assists in maintaining the correct function of
the lubricator.

So we recommend the mounting of the electric

heating unit (Z).

Connect it to a one-phase voltage source. The

values for voltage (V), output (W) and length of
the heating element (B) are stamped on the cover
of the heater junction box.

If de-mounting the electric heating unit (Z) turn

off the power beforehand to avoid electric shock,
burns or ignition of inflammable material.

3.8 ENTRY INTO SERVICE AND

MAINTENANCE

1. At delivery, the lubricators and other

equipment are rustproof. The rust
preventive can be removed with for
example kerosene or turpentine. If the
rust preventive is removed, please
ensure that untreated surfaces are rust
prevented agan.

2. If you want to clean the surveyblock

from the rust preventive, please note
that some agents are not applicable as
they may damage the surveyblock, see
list under point 9.

3. Keep gaskets for the survey blocks, tubes

and joints between the lubricators and
the lube points of the diesel engine
cylinders tight - otherwise oil supply to
the wearing surfaces between the
cylinders and the pistons is reduced.

4. Keep also the other gaskets in the

HJ Lubricator - Manual
lubricator tight to avoid oil leaks.

5. Re-tighten the screws in the lubricator

within the first three months or 2,000
operation hours.

6. Remove the strainers in the filling tubes

for cleaning or changing at suitable
intervals.

7. Disassemble the lubricators once a year

or at suitable intervals:
Clean the container of sludge.
Remove and clean the valves.
Blow through tubes.
Clean the ball control bores.

Do not apply cleaning agents

containing substances hazardous for
the survey block, see point 9.

8. On the subsequent assembling, new

gaskets and seals should be mounted.

A ALARM DEVICES
HJ TYPE 17F010

The lubritron device (P01) consists of one unit

or more per lubricator mounted with sensors
behind the survey block (P23).

A.1 Purpose
The purpose is to give signal in case of zero flow
and/or low level in the lubricator. (See
subsection A.3)

A.2 Function
Each unit is fitted with 2 sensors (X and Y)
fitting into corresponding holes at the bottom of
the flow control bore and of the level bore
respectively.

If the lubricator is equipped with more than one

alarm unit, only one unit will monitor both flow
and level. The other unit(s) will monitor flow
with both sensors.

Appendix A - Alarm device

In the level bore a float (P42) follows the oil
level in the lubricator container. This float is at
its lower end fitted with a stainless steel tube. At
the lowest permissible oil level the float comes
to a rest at the bottom of the level bore and the
steel tube will be opposite the sensor (X).

In that case relay contact A (see A.3) will open

and cause an alarm. As an extra warning signal
a red light emitting diode (LED) on the alarm
device will emit light. See further information
later in the text.

If contact A opens due to failing oil supply to the

lubricator (low level signal), there will normally
be sufficient time to restore the oil supply before
the level has dropped so much that the pumps
will suck air and then stop their operation.

If the oil flow stops in the ball control bore with

the alarm device, the stainless steel ball (P22)
will come to a rest at the bottom directly in front
of the alarm sensor (Y).

(Patented)

The relay contact B (see A.3) will then open and

cause an alarm. As an extra warning signal a red
LED on the alarm device will emit light.

In case of a signal from the LEDs or alarms

caused by contacts A or B when the engine is
running the cause must be found and
corrected at once.

Note:

a) The LEDs are also used for monitoring the

internal functions of the alarm device. This
means that an error on sensors or the internal
circuit will cause the relevant LED to emit
light, on condition that there is power supply
and that the LEDs are functional.

b) The LED for flow will be lit at every engine

standstill.

A.3 Electrical connections

Contacts in diagram are shown with power

Appendix A - Alarm device

supply on and in failure positions: low level and
zero flow.

As it appears from the diagram, both contact A

and contact B form part of steady feeble current
circuits.

Sensor circuit and contact circuit for A and B are

completely galvanically separated.

The system requires a supply voltage of 24V DC

±20%.Max. Power consumption: 100mA per
lubritron - In case of supply voltage drop out,
both contact A and contact B will open, and the
LEDs will not emit light.

Warning: It must be stressed that the max.

limits 10W/100V/300mA with ohmic load
must not be exceeded.

A.4 Alternative use of the alarm device.
The alarm device is prepared for use as
described above, but if system requirements
have been changed its use may be altered
according to need.

Circuit type
Each sensor can, according to need, be used in:

a steady feeble current circuit,

a working current circuit, or

both of the above.

See diagram for contact types. Contacts in

diagram are shown with power supply on and in
failure positions: low level and zero flow. To
change use, alteration in wiring is necessary.

Sensor correspondence
On alarm devices with two sensors it may be
desirable that both circuits indicate an error at

Appendix A - Alarm device

the same time, even if only one alarm situation
has been detected.

In that case, correspondence between sensors

can be established. With such a combination
both LEDs will emit light when an error occurs
in either circuit.

To establish correspondence demount the plug

(P25) for the jumper-house. Connect the two pin
heads (P26) under the plug by mounting the
co rrespondence jumper (P27). Now
correspondence between the two sensors has
been established.

To terminate the correspondence between the

sensors disconnect the two pin heads (P26) by
demounting the correspondence jumper (P27).

A.5. Exchange of the lubritron device

This section is only relevant if the lubricator is

equipped with exchange facilities.(i.e. if cover
(P32) is mounted).

1. Unscrew the leads from the terminals in the

junction box and remove the lubritron cable
(P31) from the box.

2. De-mount the cover (P32) from the lubricator

container (P33) by unscrewing the screws (P34).

3. De-mount the lubritron cable (P31) from the

cable gland (P35) on the lubricator.

4. Unscrew the three screws (P36) which keep

the lubritron in position at the back of the survey
block (P23).

5. Remove the lubritron (P01) carefully from the

survey block (P23) through the opening where
the cover has been re-moved.

Appendix A - Alarm device

6. Put the new lubriton (P01) carefully in its
proper place.

7. Mount the screws (P36) loosely, ensure that

the sensors (X and Y) of the lubritron catch the
right holes in the survey block. Tighten the
screws (P36) lightly, otherwise damage may
occur.

8. Draw the lubritron cable (P31) through the

cable gland (P35) on the cover.

9. Re-mount the cover (P32) with the screws

(P34)

10. Re-connect the leads of the lubritron cable

(P31) in the junction box.

Ensure that the leads are connected to the right

terminals - otherwise damage may occur.

1. DESCRIPTION OF LCD
REGULATION

1.1 PURPOSE

According to MAN B&W SL91-282:

"MAN B&W has decided to introduce this

Load Change Dependent system as
standard on all new installations ordered
from the middle of 1991."

because:

"Observations from a number of vessels

with cylinder wear rates above the average
show that the automatic increase of oil at
start and load changes has reduced the
wear rates."

"As the system is relatively easy to install

on engines in service, it is recommended
to consider installing the system also on

Appendix D - Load Change regulation

plants already in service."

1.2 DESIGN

Lubricators equipped for LCD regulation

of the cylinder lube oil quantity are fitted
with a pneumatic actuator for automatic
stroke adjustment. Apart from this a
control system controlling the actuators is
required, e.g. HJ pick-up, control box and
solenoid valve or other equipment
intended for the same function.

Securing automatically increased lubri-

cation during load changes the system
improves the operating and wear
conditions of the cylinder liners and piston
rings. The system, however, also permits
one or more lubricators to be locked in a
position for continued increased
lubrication while the remaining ones are
operating automatically.

The LCD system is outlined in the

drawings:

101432 shows the connections between

the actuator and the solenoid valve.
805154 and 805155 shows the actuator.

1.3 FUNCTION

Changes in the position of the fuel

regulation shaft reflect load changes.

If the position change of the fuel

regulation shaft is smaller than the pre-set
reference, no lubrication adjustment is
made.

If the position change is larger than the

pre-set reference value, lubrication is
increased as the control device (2)
switches on the power to the solenoid

Appendix D - Load Change regulation

valve [3] thus changing the direction of
the compressed air to the actuator [4]. The
actuator turns the eccentric shaft in the
lubricator. This will cause the stroke to be
increased by a fixed amount on all pumps
in the lubricator. Recommended setting
3mm.

It is possible to set the stroke increase to

other values: approx. 1.5, 4.5 or 6mm. See
subsections 2.1 and 2.2 for further
information about this possibility.

Patent pending

When the period of increased lubrication

is over, power to the solenoid valve [3] is
switched off, which then changes the
direction of the compressed air. Thereby
the stroke in the lubricator is returned to
the basic setting.

WARNING:
- For safety reasons do not open the
actuator while in operation. Generally
avoid getting in contact with the
movable parts of the system and do not
expose the components inside to direct
contact with liquids.

- If the lubricator is also equipped with

MEP regulation the connection from
the fuel regulation shaft to the MEP
regulation cover may be at the same
side of the lubricator as the actuator. Be
careful not to get your fingers or tools
caught between the drive for the MEP
regulation and the locking arms of the

valve.

The actuator(s) now operates according to

the Load Change principle.

If you want to change the automatic LCD

stroke adjustment from 3 to approx. 1.5,
4.5 or 6mm, follow the instructions given
above except for point 4, which in that
case should read: Turn arm (A) to position
1.5, 4.5 or 6.

One or more lubricators may be run at

increased setting, at the same time as
continuing the automatic load change
function.

1. Disconnect the air supply at the ball

valve.

2. Turn the inner arm (B) to the

required increase of setting, and
lock it.

3. Turn the outer arm (A) to a position

which gives the required stroke
increase at load change, and lock it.

Stroke increase at load change is the

difference between the setting of arm (A)
and arm (B).

Example:
Arm (B): 1.5mm
Arm (A): 4.5mm

Appendix D - Load Change regulation

Increase in basic setting: 1.5mm
approx.
Increase in stroke at load change:
4.5-1.5 = 3mm approx.

The operation of the lubricator may be

checked by observing the position
indicator (6).

2.2 MANUAL MODE - LOCKING

OF THE ACTUATORS

See drwg. 805154 and/or 805155.

The actuators may, when needed, be locked

in positions of increased lubrication, e.g.
during running-in of new cylinder liners,
pistons or piston rings. The actuators are
locked independently for increases in
stroke of +0mm, +1.5mm, +3.0mm,
+4.5mm or +6.0mm approx. The other
lubricators may still be operated
automatically by the LCD regulation.

1. Disconnect the air supply at the ball

valve.

2. Turn the two arms to the same red

field in the required position, and
lock them. (Note: Red on actuator =
grey in drawing).

Appendix D - Load Change regulation

3. Turn on the air supply at the ball
valve. The actuator(s) locked in this
way is not affected by the automatic
LCD function of the other actuators.

The operation of the lubricator may be

checked by observing the position indicator
(6).

1 THE MEP-PROPORTIONAL
REGULATOR
(variable RPM engine)

1.1 PURPOSE

MEP-regulation is designed to adjust lube-oil

consumption automatically to mean effective
pressure (MEP).

The main purpose is to save cylinder lube-oil.

Furthermore MEP-regulation entails cleaner Fig.1.

cylinders and exhaust, and consequently a reduced

risk of scavenge fires.

The drawings on this page are applicable for

engines with variable RPM and Fixed Pitch
Propeller (FPP) and for combination engines with
variable RPM and Controllable Pitch Propeller

Appendix E - MEP Regulation

(CPP).
Fig.2.
Fig.1. Shows lube-oil consumption when using
standard lubricators with fixed stroke.

Fig.2. In order to save lube-oil, consumption could

in theory be regulated 100% proportional to MEP
over the whole range from 0-100% RPM but this
might cause underlubrication at low values of
RPM.
Fig.3.

Fig.3. Shows actual curve used to avoid

underlubrication at low values of RPM.

Fig.4. Shows lube-oil savings if the MEP-

proportional regulator is applied.

1.2 DESIGN

When reading the appendix please note that the

part numbers in the text referring to sketches in
the appendix do not necessarily correspond to
actual part numbers.

The difference between the lubricator with MEP-

dependent regulation and the conventional RPM-
dependent lubricator lies in the MEP-regulation
cover (P01), the adjusting bolt nuts (P02), and the
push rod (P11) from the fuel regulation shaft (P06).

Each cover includes an overhead regulation shaft

(P10), fitted with a fork arm (P04) for each lube
point.

The lubricator cover is also mounted with a cam

mechanism (P07 and P08).

1.3 FUNCTION

The push rod (P11) from the MEP-regulation's

cam shaft will cause the cam to turn proportionally

Appendix E - MEP Regulation

to the movement of the fuel regulation shaft.

When the cam (P08) turns, the overhead regulation

shaft (P10), on which a number of "fork arms"
(P04) are mounted, will turn.

As the "fork arms" (P04) catch each their adjusting

bolt nut (P02), the turning will result in a change of
the pump stroke for all pumps in the lubricator.

The cam mechanism (P07 + P08) and the ratio r1/r2

determine the regulation range and settle the max.
and min. limits of the regulation at the same time.

MEP-proportional regulation is applied according

to the theoretical information from the engine
designer, builder or shipowner, i.e. only in
situations similar to the theoretical ones will the
index be fully identical with MEP.

1.4 LUBE-OIL SAVINGS

Savings can be studied in drawing 801949. If the

adjusted stroke at 100% MEP is different from the
one in drawing 801949, make a parallel
displacement until the actual stroke is obtained.

2. DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Adjustment of stroke in lubricator.

1. See to it that the handle for joint quantity

adjustment (P50) is set to pos. minus (-),
OR that the actuator (P51) has been
locked at pos. 0mm stroke addition (arms
A and B - (6) is the position indicator).
(See appendix F about LCD-regulation).

2. Set the fuel regulation shaft (P06) to

index 102.8 (corresponding to 100%

Appendix E - MEP Regulation

MEP) or higher.

3. Adjust the stroke to the required size.

Check lubricator manual how to do this.

4. Unlock the actuator (P51) if there is LCD-

regulation.

3. INSTALLATION

The fuel pump index mentioned is theoretical. Use

the actual index, if that is known, when the engine
is re-started.

1. The cam shaft of the regulation cover of

the lubricator (P09) is fitted with a
marking scratch; when this scratch is
opposite the corresponding scratch on the
regulation cover, the cam arrangement is
placed approx. in the middle of the
regulation range - from 40% to 100%
MEP.

Adjust the cam shaft (P09) so that the two

scratches are opposite each other.

2. Mount the arms (P03+P05) and the push

rod (P11) so that the arms are
perpendicular to the push rod.

Tighten the screws (P12) in the arm (P05)

Appendix E - MEP Regulation

lightly, so that the arm cannot turn on the
shaft.

Tighten one of the pointed screws (P13)

so much that it stops the movement of the
arm (P03) on the cam shaft (P09) without
damaging it.

If necessary, you may fine adjust the

length of the push rod by loosening the
counter nuts (P14+P15) and turning the
push rod (P11).

HJ proj. no. 273A

The link head (P16) has left thread.

Remember to re-tighten the counter nuts.

Lock the lock plates (P17).

3. Take out the other pointed screw (P13)

from the arm (P03), and with the hole as
gauge drill a small crater in the shaft (90°
and 2,5mm depth).

Mount the screw and tighten it.

Repeat the same procedure for the first

pointed screw (P13).

Demount the arm (P03) and remove the

burrs from the shaft.

Remount the arm and tighten the pointed

screws (P13).

4. Loosen the screws (P12) on the arm for

the fuel regulation shaft (P05) totally, and
bring the fuel regulation shaft to position

Appendix E - MEP Regulation

100% MEP (index = 102.8).

5. Demount the top cover of the regulation

cover (P18).

Bring the cam shaft to the position where

the tip of the cam follower (P07) is placed
between the smallest radius of the cam
and the cam piece (mark 100%).

This is done by starting to place the cam

shaft in a position where the cam follower
is with certainty placed on the smallest
radius of the cam. As the radius
differences are very small, this may be
difficult to see - you can, however, feel it
by using your finger to press the cam
follower towards the cam and turning the
latter at the same time.

HJ proj. no. 273A

You may do the same with greater
precision if you use a dial gauge.

Turn the cam shaft slowly so that the cam

piece is getting closer to the point of the
cam follower, until this piece starts to
move; the cam is now placed in a position
corresponding to 100% MEP (index =
102.8).

6. Tighten the mounting screws (P12) in the

arm (P05) with the shafts in the positions
described under paragraphs 4 and 5,
corresponding to 100% MEP.

7. If the position described above is not

position 100% MEP, index = 102.8, (cp.
engine builder's/designer's specifications)
then turn the fuel regulation shaft and
hereby the cam shaft to position 100%
MEP.

8. Note the following when adjusting the

stroke:

Appendix E - MEP Regulation

1. Place the handle for joint
quantity adjustment in position
minus (-).
or - if applied -:
2. Lock the LCD-actuator in
position 0.

Adjust the stroke of each pump to the one

recommended by engine designer, builder
or owner e.g. 2.72mm (ø6.0mm pistons),
as described in the lubricator manual (in
this value, the volumetric efficiency 0.9
has been taken into consideration).

DURING THE RUNNING-IN OF NEW

ENGINES, THE ENGINE BUILDER'S
SPECIFICATIONS MUST BE
FOLLOWED, BOTH CONCERNING
PUMP STROKE AT 100% MEP AND
ALSO A DECREASE OF PUMP
STROKE TO 2.72MM.

4. MAINTENANCE

4.1 Grease the link heads through the

lubrication nipples (P19+P21).

4.2 Check setting of stroke with suitable

intervals as the adjusted stroke will
increase slightly during the running in of
MEP-regulation.
