Survey summary

A survey was conducted among 50 students of thapar university, Patiala. The survey’s focus
was mainly among the thoughts that youth have about makeup, it is also useful to have a clear
understanding about the effect of makeup on the different aspects of our life. The survey
responses were analysed to identify any patterns of commonalities of different thoughts of
different aged people. According to question 1 it was found that out of total no. of people
throughout the survey 60.7% were male and rest were female. 83.9% of people were aged
above 18 and 16.1 were below the legal age. For question 3 of the survey, an open-ended
question, was established to supplement the forced answer questions. The purpose of this
question was to gain further understanding into the individual participant’s personal reasons
for wearing makeup. The responses were entirely different, such as: as a hobby, to look
pretty, just to pretend being beautiful, to beautify their personality, to gain confidence, to hide
their insecurities. It was first important to determine the common perception of people about
makeup and identity which takes us to the question 4, it was seen that 51.8% of people think
of makeup that hides one’s personality and the other 48.2% believes that makeup enhance a
person’s identity which resulted as a debatable question as the thought was split in almost
exact half of bad and good perception about makeup. Question 5 examines the basic idea
behind the thought of wearing makeup in which a majority of 64.3% people do makeup as a
hobby, 16.1% thinks of makeup as a necessity, while the rest thoughts were mixed such as:
makeup is a way to look pretty, waste of money, just a show-off. More than half of the people
(67.9%) people thinks that makeup is not necessary in day today life but the other 32.1%
people believes in wearing makeup regularly on daily basis which can be seen clearly pic
chart of question 6. Five different type of thoughts was seen when question 7 was asked i.e.
why women wear makeup, the response was as following; half of the people thinks that
women do makeup to gain confidence, while 14.3% believes that they do makeup just to
jealous other women, 25% was equally divided into two halves of different opinions that is to
impress men and to improve their facial complexion. Moving on towards the impact of
makeup a majority of 89.3% shows that the fashion industry is most affected by it, while the
other 14.3% says makeup had impact on educational world, the remaining sees that makeup
has affected the industrial world. Question 9 of the survey was a major one, because 57.1% of
people believes that makeup acts as a camouflage to hide one’s true identity/personality, on
the other hand 42.9% strongly voted against this. Finally, when the choice was given of being
a better personality/soul or to look better through makeup 94.6% wanted to be a better
person, but the remaining 5.4% preferred the looks. The survey was also used to understand
the relationship between women’s use of makeup and their self-perception. Through this
survey it was clear that the thoughts about makeup and identity is largely varied from person
and to person and their lifestyle.
