Comittee : United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)

Country : Algeria
Topic : Food Security As It Relates To Unrest and Political Stability

Represented by: Aulia Rahman

“The ambition of a world without hunger and malnutrition by 2030 will be

challenging-achieving it will require renewed efforts through new ways of working...
Achieving zero hunger and ending undernutrition could be out of reach for many countries
affected by conflict” (FAO/IFAD/UNICEF/WFP/WHO 2017)

The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria knows the importance of addressing

food security as it relates to unrest and political stability and hopes to cooperate
internationally to relieve food instability for those affected by conflict. During Algeria’s own
decade-long civil war, the purchasing power of its citizens fell by more than ten percent and
did not rise to normal levels until the conflict ended; conflict in Algeria led to poverty for its
citizens, decreasing food security for many. Today, the nation hosts between 90.000 and
173.000 refugees. It has been difficult to build food security among refugees in Algeria since
the desert climate limits arable land, constraining agricultural capacity and severely hindering
refugee’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency and engage with local economies. 1

Noting the importance of UN programs including the Food and Agriculture Recovery
Operations and Organizational Recovery Assistance for its refugee population, Algeria
supports the continuation of such efforts to improve the living standards of refugees as a
whole. Algeria also seeks to protect the right of refugees to work and for public assistance
and to ensure their ability to maintain food security.

Zero Hunger programmes implemented as part of this strategy which is aimed at:
facilitating access to proper nutrition, supporting agriculture, promoting income-generating
activities, and encouraging social mobilization. Algeria and WFP has implemented a wide
range of measures such as combines prevention and treatment approaches to address
anaemia, stunting and malnutrition, food assistance, school feeding, and complementary

activities. Based on the global hunger index the current policy is very influential in
reducing the prevalence of stunting in children under 5 years from 2000 to 2018 by 10%. 2

The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria fully recognizes that refugees are not
the only group suffering from a lack of food security, but it also sees that they are many of
the world’s food-insecure individuals and seeks for the General Assembly, First Committee,
to address this pressing issue as the worldwide number of refugees continues to rise due to
the ongoing crisis in Syria and the Middle East. Algeria acknowledges the complication of
this issue, but intensive efforts by humans can always solve problems made by humans. To
solve the issue regarding Food Security As It Relates To Unrest and Political Stability
Through Sustainable Development Goals Algeria has further solutions which might be
applicable and fair towards united needs:

1. Food rations and basket: reducing the amount of sugar in the food basket in
compliance with World Health Organization (WHO) standards, and gradually
decreasing the quantities of cereals and SuperCereal provided, once the provision
of fortified wheat flour is resumed, to address malnutrition and anaemia while
maintaining acceptable dietary diversity, recommended kilocalorie intakes and
overall costs.3
2. School feeding activity reformulation.
3. Complementary activities that improve refugees food security and nutrition. The
new resilience approach includes livelihood activities, such as green fodder
production using low-tech hydroponics and a fish farm, and4
4. promote healthy nutrition behavior and practices through communication of social
change and behavior as a way to overcome social barriers.

Therefore, Algeria hope best solution and contribution will engange us to take wise
resolutions which applicable and relevant for all hands. Convincingly, U.N was created for a
better world and not to satisfy someone or one party will.
