GRAMMAR EXTRA 1

ELEMENTARY UNIT 11

11.1 should/shouldn’t
1 Read the text below. Write questions with should / shouldn’t .
The fi rst time lightning hit Roy Sullivan it burned his right leg and le a hole in his shoe. On the
seventh time lightning hit Roy it burned his head, chest and stomach. Lightning hit Roy more times
than any other person. During an electrical storm, lightning can travel from the storm to the ground, it
can hit another thing, then travel to the side and hit a person or it can hit the ground, travel through
the earth and hit you. So what should you do when there is an electrical storm?
Firstly, to stop lightning hitting you, you shouldn’t stay outside. Find a building to get inside or get
inside a car. If there is no building near you, you should get onto the ground, curl up on your knees
and put your feet together. You shouldn’t lie on the ground and you should move away from water. If
you are in a swimming pool, get out quickly. Never put your umbrella up – getting wet is better than
being hit by lightning. Don’t stand under a tree –
twenty-fi ve percent of people hit by lightning were under a tree. But the best thing is to watch the
weather and not go out when a storm is coming.
