Patrick Canagasingham

Chief Operating Officer

Habitat for Humanity
322 West Lamar Street
Americus, Georgia 31709

Dear Mr. Canagasingham:

I am writing to express my interest in the position of chief communication officer at Habitat

for Humanity. I am a graduate with honors from Texas Christian University with a degree in
entrepreneurship and innovation and I also have a master's from the IE in communication
and public relations.

Ever since I was a teenager I have been an active volunteer in many community services but
the one that really touched me was Habitat. My first construction was an eye-opening
experience, being able to see the impact I made on a family made me fall in love with the
project and purpose of Habitat and that was the moment I decided I wanted to be a part of it
when I grew up. I was already really involved with the organization in high school and
college by having leadership positions in Habitat trying to help spread awareness and get
more volunteers to make a bigger impact but now I would like the opportunity to play even
a bigger part. Everyone says you should do what you love and I love being able to help
make people’s lives better which is exactly the purpose of this organization. I believe that I
would not only enjoy this job which would make me very dedicated, but also I would be
perfect for the position since I am already familiar with how the organization works and the
process behind it. My knowledge and understanding of the organization plus my master's in
communication and public relations are what make me perfect for this position. Since my
specialty and focus are in the project management and public relations part of business I
would be able to provide a different perspective to the job than the other candidates with a
communication degree. I would not only be focusing on the PR part, I would also be using
my business degree to help make the company more innovative and therefore make it grow
and make a bigger impact. I believe that my academic background and experience will
make me a great addition to Habitat.

I would appreciate the opportunity to interview with Habitat for Humanity for the position of
chief communication officer. I have attached my resume below. Please feel free to contact
me via email at giova.brozzonzanotticavazzoni@tcu.edu or phone (732) 829-9341 if you have
any questions. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Giovanna Brozzon.
Draft questions
1. I feel good about my final product. I feel like I have improved my cover letter a lot
from the first one I wrote. I think I did a good job in making me stand out from the
other applicants by implementing an emotional element and explaining why I
wanted this job so badly because of how the organization impacted me.

2. I’m not totally sure about if I should have made it longer, should I have been more
exaggerated and put more work experience? I thought about doing this and I actually
did in one of my earlier drafts but I decided to stick to how it is now because I wanted
to emphasize on the emotional connection I have with the company because that’s
what makes me different from other companies.

3. My specific questions for Dr.Said are should the last paragraph be longer, have other
information than just my contact information (I followed the examples but it just
seems like maybe I could add a little conclusion or something).

4. I think she’ll say that I did a good job especially with how I made me stand out from
other applicants by telling my personal experience with the company and explaining
how the company had an impact in my life and that’s why I want the job.

Reflection questions
1. What did you observe about shifting your audience from me (academia) to the
outside world (e.g future employer, internship, or university) ?
- I observed that it was harder because when I’m doing an assignment for a
teacher I already know that person and what she/he expects from me, but for
this assignment I had to write to someone I didn’t know anything about and I
didn’t know what he expected so I just had to do what I thought was correct
and what I thought would help him persuade him into hiring me.
2. What challenge did you face when changing the context and form of your writing
from personal to professional?
- It was challenging because I am not us3ed to writing professionally so it was
something new for me. I feel like this assignment took me longer than the “I
am” poem because it is something I’ve never done before. Also, I feel that it’s
easier to write with a personal form due to the fact that it’s more simple, more
everyday writing.
3. What role can/does descriptive writing play within professional/business writing?
- I feel like it can help you in certain scenarios like when you are trying to
advertise a product or persuade someone.
4. How can we use descriptive writing to help us get what we can't?
- We can use descriptive writing because it helps you convince people with
details, like in the cover letter for example I am able to not only say I want the
job but explain why I want that particular job which makes me a better
candidate.
5. What reflection questions can you create?
- How do you think this assignment will help you in your future?
- How do you think you could implement what you learned in class to other
writing assignments?
