PROJECTS OR DESIGN BREIFS

PROJECT ONE - VARYING STILL-LIFE

ELEMENT OF DESIGN

Line- is a mark between two points by a writing tool. A line can be created with
many writing tools namely pencils, ballpoints, pens, quill pens, crayons or even
paint brushes.

Line can be thick or thin long or short. There is a variety of different lines
namely horizontal, vertical diagonal, curved, zigzagged and transitional. The
varieties can be of their original form or they can show movements and patterns.

AIMS
-To develop good sketching skills.
-To learn how to use varying tones, lines and pencil techniques, in producing a
drawing.
-To develop good observation skills.

ON AN A3 SHEET OF PAPER LIGHTLY DRAW THE SET STILL-LIFE


USING AN HB PENCIL.ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS LIGHTLY
DIVIDE YOUR PAGE INTO (4) WITH A PENCIL AND A RULER.IN EACH
DIVISION YOU WILL USE A DIFFERENT WAY OF SHADING, eg
CONTOUR LINES WHICH SHOW VARIATION IN TONE,HATCHING,
CROSS-HATCHING,STIPPLE/REPEATED LINES SHOWING
TEXTURE.YOU MUST USE A SOFTER PENCIL TO SHADE IN.MOUNT
FINISHED WORK ON CARD FLAT WITH AN OVERLAY.

PROJECT TWO-

BASIC FORM SCULPTURE


→A SHAPE IS A TWO-DIMENSIONAL AREA WITH IDENTIFIABLE BOUNDARIES.

→ A MASS IS A THREE-DIMENSIONAL SOLID WITH IDENTIFIABLE BOUNDARIES.

→FORM IS THE SHAPE OF A THING OR PERSON; THREE DIMENSIONAL QUALITY OR

VOLUME…..

AIMS

-To learn how to, join separate unrelated parts together into a visually unified
sculpture.

-To learn how to manipulate 2 dimensional card board into three dimensional
sculptures.

-To encourage the expression of form and feeling in artwork.

MAKE AS MANY BASIC FORMS AS YOU WANT FROM MOUNTING


BOARD/DUPLEX.MAKE UP A 3-DIMENSIONAL SCLUPUTRE WITH A MAXIMUM

HIGHT OF (50CM). PAINT YOUR Sculpture WITH WHITE PVA PAINT. MAKE A
MINIMUM OF THREE OF EACH OF THE BASIC SHAPES. CONSTRUCT YOUR BASIC
FORMS CORRECTLY.

1) DRAW AND SHADE YOUR SCULPTURE.


2) DRAW THE NEGATIVE SHAPES OF YOUR SCLUPTURE.
3) PAINT THE NEGATIVE SHAPES IN FLAT BLACK.

PRESENT THE THREE PIECES OF WORK TWO MOUNTED ON WHITE CARD IN

A FOLDER FORM, WITH THE Sculpture MOUNTED ON A SOLID BOARD.

PROJECT THREE-STYLIZATION

AIMS

-To impact knowledge on types of colour.

-To develop skills on how to mix colours and use colours.

-To guide students on how to create colour contrast.

-To analyse and develop designs from existing complex magazine picture to a
simplified or stylize picture.

FIND A PICTURE FROM A MAGAZINE,SIMPLIFY OR STYLIZE YOUR PICTURE


AND TRACE IT OUT THREE TIMES.USING FLAT COLOUR PAINT EACH
PICTURE IN THE COLOUR SCHEMES THAT FOLLOW:

1) MONO-CHROMATIC SCHEME (USE A MAXIMUM OF [5]


COLOURS/MINIMUM [3] COLOURS).
2) ANALOGOUS SCHEME (USE A MAXIMUM OF [5] COLOURS/MINIMUM
[3] COLOURS).
3) COMPLIMENTARY SCHEME (USE TINTS AND SHADES MAXIMUM OF [5]
COLOURS/MINIMUM [3] COLOURS).

WINDOW MOUNT WITH CARD /DUPLEX (CAN BE BLACK/WHITE) WITH AN


OVERLAY.

PROJECT FOUR- TEXTURE COLLAGE

AIMS:

-To learn how to observe tonal variation in objects and describe this

three dimensional quality in two dimensional form

-Two experiment with collage technique

-To learn how to express texture in all drawing and paintings into a

picture.

THEME: YOUR STAR SIGN.

SIMULATE AS MANY TEXTURES AS YOU CAN USING RUBBINGS, SPONGE,

WAX RESIST, GLUE RESIT, INKS &BLEACH, POTATO PRINTS etc. . . .YOU WILL

NEED STRECTHED PAPER FOR CREATING OR SIMULATING TEXTURES

USING PAINTS; WITH YOUR TEXTURE SAMPLES MAKE UP A COLLAGE ON A2

SIZE CARD OR PAPER. DO NOT USE SCISSORS TO MAKE SHAPES, USE TORN

EDGES ONLY. DO NOT PAINT ON THE COLLAGE.

PROJECT FIVE- GEOMETRIC AND ORGANIC SHAPE
DESIGN
AIMS:
-To observe the varieties of patterns in nature and use these examples to
create new patterns/designs.

-To learn how to repeat shapes to create a design.

-To guide student in how to paint flat with gouache paint.


USING ANY SOURCE MATERIAL YOU CAN FIND ON AFRICAN
PATTERNS OR SHAPES OF ARTIFACTS CREATE TWO DESIGNS.
1) GEOMETRIC SHAPE DESIGN (PAINT FLAT IN MONOCHROMATIC
COLOU SCHEME).
2) ORGANIC SHAPE DESIGN (PAINT FLAT IN ANY COLOURS
MAKING USE OF TEXTURE).

PROJECT SIX - VIEW FINDER COMPOSITION

AIMS:

-To increase skills in close observation & concentration.

-To learn basic principles of composition.

-TO guide students on use of space using a view finder and learn how to
place the subject effectively on the picture area.

MAKE A VIEW FINDER, LOOKING THROUGH YOUR VIEW FINDER


DO AS MANY THUMB NAIL SKETCHES AS YOU CAN (MINIMUM 8)
ONTO AN A3 PAPER, BEARING IN MIND THE PRINCIPLES OF
COMPOSITION. FROM THESE SKETCHES, CHOOSE ONE WHICH
YOU FIND APPEALING. YOU WILL DRAW IT OUT CORRECTLY ON
STRETCHED A2 PAPER AND PAINT IT.REMEMBERING THE USE OF
FORM, LINE, TEXTURE, COLOUR, SPACE etc. AT THE CRIT YOU
WILL BE EXPECTED TO EXPLAIN WHY YOU CHOOSE YOUR
COMPOSITION.

PROJECT SEVEN- FOUND OBJECT COLLAGE

AIMS:

-To develop good observation skills.

-To learn collage technique.

-To learn how to arrange shape and pattern in a picture.

-To learn the effects of magnifying objects to larger/smaller than life.

-TO experiment with different mediums.

1) ON AN A2 BOARD MAKE A COLLAGE OF ANY TOPIC, USING ANY

INTERESTING FOUND OBJECTS, BARE IN MIND SPACE, COLOUR, AND

COMPOSITION etc.

2) STRETCH PAPER SO THAT THE FINISHED SIZE IS A3 LIGHTLY DRAW YOUR

COLLAGE TO SCALE, ON TO THE PAPER AND THEN LIGHTLY DRAW A GRID

OVER YOUR DRAWING (20 SECTIONS). IN EACH SECTION TRY DIFFERENT

MEDIA TO ACCURATELY REPRESENT YOUR COLLAGE. PRODUCE DETAILED

PENCIL WORK, LOOSE LINE WORK, PASTELS, WATER COLOUR, MIXED

MEDIA, TEXTURE etc.

PLEASE NOTE THAT MARKS WOULD BE AWARDED FOR ACCURACY IN

REPRESENTING THEIR COLLAGE AND USE OF VARYING MEDIA.

PROJECT EIGHT- FACE DISTORTION

AIMS:

-To learn the basics about proportions of the face.

-To make a picture of a person in a setting that reflects who the person
is.

-To develop good draw and stylization skills.

-To experiment with different paint and drawing mediums.

1) ON A3 PAPER DRAW YOUR FACE [SELF PORTRAIT], USING

PENCIL SHADING, AS ACCURATELY AS POSSIBLE USING A

MIRROR OR A PHOTOGRAPH.

2) ON STRETCHED A2 PAPER LIGHTLY DRAW YOUR FACE TO

SCALE, THEN DRAW A GRID OVER YOUR SKETCH (20 SECTIONS).

IN EACH SECTION EITHER ENLARGE OR REDUCE OR LEAVE THE

PARTICULAR FEATURE THE SAME SIZE. BY USING, A VARIATION

IN MEDIA LIKE THE PREVIOUS PROJECT; PAINT YOUR FACE. YOU

DO NOT HAVE TO USE REALISTIC COLOURS AND YOU CAN MAKE

YOUR FACE AS BIZARRE AS YOU WANT.

PROJECT NINE- CAMOUFLAGE

AIMS:

-To understand art as a means to document our natural environment. -

-To increase skills in close observation and concentration.

TO develop good use of paint medium.

THE THEME OF THIS PROJECT IS CAMOUFLAGE THAT IS

[DISGUISE, A MEANS OF DECEIVING OBSERVATION]. PLEASE DO

NOT USE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE MILITARY, AS THIS IS TOO

OBVIOUS. RESEARCH WELL AND SUBMIT ALL ROUGH SKETCHES

AND IDEAS OF RESEARCH WITH FINISHED PAINTING.

ON MINIMUM A2 PAPER, CARD etc. PAINT A PICTURE USING ANY

PAINT MEDIA; YOU MUST CONSIDER COMPOSTION, USE OF

CLOUR, FORM, LINE etc.

PROJECT TEN- MIRROR DISTORTION

AIMS:

-To create the effect of magnification and reflection.

-To increase skills in close observation.

-To guide student on how to create colour contrasts.

-To develop skill in stylization and distortion.

FIND A MAGAZINE PICTURE OR A PHOTOGRAPHY OF ANYTHING

THAT APPEALS TO YOU. YOUR FINISHED PICTURE MUST BE A2.

ENLARGE YOU PICTURE; AT LEAST [5] FIVE TIMES RANGING

FROM 2CM TO 1⁄2 CM.WHATEVER TOUCHES THE BOUNDRY OF

YOUR PICTURE;REPEAT INTO THE BORDERS AND PAINT PICTURE

AS NEAR TO THE ORIGINAL AS POSSIBLE.

PROJECT ELEVEN- SCRATCH DRAWING

AIMS:

-To create the effect of magnification and reflection.

-To increase skills in close observation.

-To guide student on how to create colour contrasts.

-To develop skill in stylization and distortion.

THEME: INSECTS, REPTILES OR SEA/WATER ORGANISMS.

STRETCH AN A2 SIZE PAPER, USING OIL PASTELS AND WAX


CRAYONS RUBBER VERY HARD ONTO THE PAPER RANDOMLY OR
FOLLOWING A PATTERN. FROM PREVIOUSLY DRAWN STRETCHES
SELECT ONE YOU LIKE. PAINT THE WAX COVERD PAPER WITH
BLACK INDIAN INK. WHEN IT IS DRY USE A SHARP TOOL OR
INSTRUMENT, TO SCRATCH OUT YOUR SELECTED SKETCH INTO A
FINISHED ARTWORK. PRESENT IT MOUNTED WITH AN OVERLAY;
INCLUDE ALL YOUR SKETCHES.

PROJECT TWELVE- PHOTOGRAPHIC EXTENSION

AIMS:

-To increase skills in close observation.

-To introduce the scratch drawing technique.

-To guide students on how to use line, to make intricate patterns.

-To develop skills on how to use colour to enrich a drawing.

FIND A COLOURED PHOTOGRAPH OR MAGAZINE PICTURE, YOU

ARE REQUIRED TO EXTEND THE PICTURE OR PHOTOGRAPH BY

DRAWING AND PAINTING FROM THE OUTSIDE EDGES. THINK OF

THE PICTURE AS A VISUAL STORY. EACH PICTURE TELLS US

SOMETHING. YOU ARE GOING TO BUILD UPON THAT STORY

WHICH YOU SEE IN YOUR PICTURE. IF YOU LIKE A PARTICULAR

SECTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH OR PICTURE, YOU CAN CUT OUT

THE AREA. THINK ABOUT WHAT COULD EXIST BEYOND THE

EDGES OF THE PICTURE. USE A LARGE PAPER, ENOUGH TO GIVE

YOU ADEQUATE SPACE TO DEVELOP YOUR PICTURE.
