Content Area Literacy Strategy: Assessment: Tied To Your Stance On Learning (improving
Adolescent Literacy, p. 160)
Goal: The goal of this lesson is to provide the students with a fun learning experience that
incorporates other aspects of content they've received throughout the semester. Since this is
the last lesson and class for these students before they move on to their new classes for the
hnext nine weeks, | wanted to give them the opportunity to create an instrument that they can
play and keep,
Description of Learning Strategy and Experience:
Assessment tied to your stance on learning is a tool used by teachers to assess students’
understanding of the content while incorporating the teacher's philosophy and values as a
teacher into the assessment,
Rationale: Assessment is an integral part of teaching and one that should be considered heavily
‘when crafting lesson plans, Improving Adolescent Literacy says, “Every teacher brings a
philosophy of education and a view of literacy to his or her practice. It is important to recognize
how assessment choices fit into that perspective.” It is important for us as educators to discuss
and utilize each other's philosophies. The National institute for Learning Outcomes Assessmen
says, “The second purpose is for assessment professionals to be better prepared and informed
‘on how to engage in conversations about student learning with people from different
philosophical positions and viewpoints such that they do not talk past each other.”“On the bongos, you've just created, Id like you to repeat after me.” Play rhythm patterns
including quarter, eighth, and triplet notes.
“Now Id lke to play question and answer | will play a four-beat rhythm pattern and then Id like
you to improvise and play your own pattern”
Assessment: It was a very chaotic day scrambling around to help each student create their
bongos but they were smiling the whole time and told me how much they enjoyed class. |
assessed their performance on the instruments through visual and aural assessments. They
Performed the rhythmic patterns that they repeated after me almost perfectly! If | have them
next year for general music Ill make sure to practice the question and answer activity more.
