0 Background and Curriculum Vitae

1.1 Biography

Edward St John was born and raised in Baltimore Maryland. He is 83 years old.
According to official website of St. John Properties Inc, Edward St. John attended
University of Maryland for Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in
1961. His current net worth in 2021 estimated more than 3.5 million US Dollars. Next,
Edward St. John married to Jennifer Gilbert who is a news anchor of Fox News.
At the age of 16, when his father passed away, he took over the family business
before he started his own company which is St. John Properties Inc. Mr. St. John’s dad
was a businessman with three small businesses, a manufacturer of building materials, a
distributor, a third company with 5,10,000 sq. ft. in the trade. Next, he sold the
manufacturing and distribution materials and concentrated on property has partnered
with Leroy Merritt, a local developer, while both have built an Empire.
According to Baltimore Sun, Edward St. John has no plans to retire anytime soon.
He stated that he genuinely enjoys doing real estate business and he considered
commercial real estate industry like monopoly board games to him. Even though he
enjoys doing his own business, he also actively doing a charity to people in needs

$65 million has been pledged and donated to over 350 educational and other nonprofit
organizations in the Baltimore/Washington region through outright contributions or

St. John Properties Inc was established in 1971 by Edward St. John. It is the leading
manufacturer of 82 certified LEED buildings, designing and construction. St. John
Properties Inc is now one of the largest and most successful, commercial real estate
companies in the Mid-Atlantic region, from a small, local real estate developer. The
company's real estate investments are worth more than four billion US Dollars, and it
proudly serves over 2,500 clients in eight states, including Maryland, Colorado,
Louisiana, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin. There are 198

2.0 Leadership Approaches and Style

2.1 Leadership Approaches

According to Kouzes & Posner (2002) has conducted a research on effective leadership.
It stated that a leader is an ordinary people who help guide the others to rightful path.
There are five types of approaches has been introduced by the author which are Model
the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act and
Encourage the Heart.
Edward St. John has an” Encourage The Heart” leadership approaches. Mr. St.
John demonstrates appreciation of the contributions of people and create a culture to
recognize achievements for his staff. For example, in 2019, Mr. St. John surprised his
198 employees with 10 million USD extra bonus during the company’s holiday party. It
is a token of appreciation from Mr. St. John to his employees because the company able
to achieve their goals of developing 20 million square feet office space. Moreover, it
shows that Mr. St. John appreciates and thankful for his employee’s hard work and
dedication to achieve the company goals.
Mr. St. John inspires others to persevere by encouraging the heart. He appreciates
his employees by showing his gratitude for accomplished the company goals together.
Hence, leaders should express gratitude for their employees' contributions and create an
environment of achievement recognition.

2.2 Leadership Style

Based on research conducted by Goleman (2000), the author stated that the best leaders
are not dependent only on one style of leadership but can use several styles depending
on the situation. According to the author, there are six style of leadership that can be
use which are The Coercive Style, The Authoritative Style, The Affiliative Style, The
Democratic Style, The Pace Setting Style and The Coaching Style.
Edward St. John create a strong emotional bond that translate into strong loyalty
by seeking to make people happy and harmonize. He likely to spend time with his

employees to celebrate a job well done together such as team dinner, holiday parties
and many more. The employees would most probably love him, be loyal, share
information and have a high standard of confidence, all of which help to establish a
better working environment. Mr. St. John will give frequent positive feedback to try to
help everyone to be on the right track. It shows that Edward St. John understands and
acknowledges other people's emotions, views and authentic interests

3.0 Project Involvement

3.1 Edward St. John Foundation

Edward St. John Foundation was established in 1998. Edward St John involved in
development of Edward St John Foundation. Mr. St. John's commitment and
commitment to give back to the community continued to grow as the company
continued to grow. This foundation contributes funds to formal education programs.
The mission of this foundation is to provide financial assistance to formal education
programs through the high school level. According to official website of Edward St.
John Foundation, over $65 million has been pledged and donated to over 350
educational and other nonprofit organizations in the Baltimore/Washington region
through outright contributions or gifts-in-kind.
Hence, it will make others inspired by his generosity to give some help to people
in need. However, in 2007, Mr. St. John turned the members of the Board over all of
the Foundation's charitable decisions. Those persons will carry out Mr. St. John's
mission of the Foundation. They will continue to work together to build local
communities with St. John Properties. It shows that Edward St. John is good leader to
be an example to others because of his generosity and concern toward other.
