According to the article the first step is for the teacher to identify if the problem is a result of overthinking about rules and strategies. A common
correction to this problem is to simply focus on finishing the draft, and for the student to worry about grammar rules and technical of the such
afterwards. The next step is to ask questions about the student’s topic to arouse some ideas for them. For lazier students that don’t put much thought
into their writing this will be more active than passive. This can be accomplished by asking them to explain their thoughts in a way that an outsider
would understand. Another piece of advice is nonstop writing for about 15 minutes. This is meant to be more of warmup activity and shouldn’t actually
be viewed by the teacher. The final piece of advice is to be encouraging to students. Most students are very self-conscience about their writing at may
fear for it being inadequate, so a teacher being a beacon of positive reinforcement is always welcome.
I feel that an amount of writer’s block is caused grammar and such. The brunt of mine comes from translating my thoughts into words others would
understand. If anything, the rules of writing help me get past writer’s block by giving me something else to take my mind off putting my thoughts into
words. In comparison to Oliver’s essay, I would be someone who takes the time to process my ideas while reading over my essay.
Based on Oliver’s essay, the key to defeating writer’s block is focusing on your ideas, and if you ever get too caught up on one thing free write to
generate new ideas. Ask people you trust to read over your work in order to receive their feedback and suggestions. And finally look for words of
encouragement from others, because nobody can be a perfect writer on the own.
