SDS1 - PROJECT BRIEF

The idea is to conduct two small projects on which students can have a better understanding of
the principles of passive design and challenges of designing in two different climate zones and
observe the nuances.

Project 1 : A residential scheme of Bungalows.

Project Description : A residential scheme of 8-10 bungalow units with a club house as a
shared amenity space. While primary focus is on the key principles of sustainable design the
project also demands pandemic safe features also as a response to the current needs of the
world.

The design of the units can be repeated for the same size and orientation of the plots, however
when orientations change, the design should still function passively, by making necessary
changes to the fenestration along with changes in the planning as needed.

The club house will be a shared amenity space with Recreational activities like party lawn,
indoor/ outdoor sports areas along with Work spaces in adapting to the Work from home culture
while still providing an environment suited for work. Open desking, small cabins, conference
room, multipurpose hall are some examples. Furthermore, Aim to design with a flexible
approach for how the same spaces shall be repurpurposed when these facilities appear out of
context in future.

Project 2 : A Bungalow for a professional with a small office set up. (e.g Artist, Doctor, Fashion
Designer etc.)

Project Description : A Time-Bound Project, focusing on seamless integration of passive

design strategies with innovative architectural ideas. The mode of presentation can be decided
by the students, could be in the form of sketches, 3D Views, CAD Drawings, anything you feel
comfortable with and get the work done quickly. Your drawings must have a sense of scale
nonetheless, disproportionate sketches or drawings will not be accepted.

The final product shall be a conceptual design with all the supporting data that justifies your
ideas. Heat gain calculations are not required in detail, you may use thumb rules/graphs to
approximate your sizing. Take advantage of the flexibility in the mode of presentation, allowing
you to create not just one but many ideas in a short time.
